%20was%20not%20a%20very%20adventurous%20cook.%20%20She%20made%20an%20amazing%20peppermint%20slice,%20mince%20and%20tatties%20and%20broth,%20%20but%20her%20'signature%20dish'%20was%20her%20Cloutie%20Dumpling.%20%20A%20Cloutie%20Dumpling%20is%20a%20sweetened%20fruit%20pudding,%20boiled%20in%20a%20cloth%20(clout),%20the%20cloth%20is%20floured%20giving%20the%20pudding%20a%20'skin'.%20%20My%20Granny%20made%20a%20Dumpling%20at%20Christmas%20and%20for%20my%20Dad's%20birthday%20and%20we%20ate%20it%20as%20dessert%20with%20custard.%20%20She%20would%20always%20send%20us%20home%20with%20half%20the%20dumpling%20and%20Dad%20would%20fry%20it%20in%20butter%20and%20dredge%20it%20with%20caster%20sugar,%20that%20was%20my%20favourite%20way%20to%20eat%20it.%20%20I%20know%20a%20lot%20of%20people%20also%20serve%20it%20with%20a%20full%20Scottish%20breakfast.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20Mum,%20who%20is%20an%20excellent%20cook%20and%20baker,%20%20tried%20to%20replicate%20Granny's%20Dumpling%20but%20she%20never%20could%20get%20it%20to%20taste%20the%20same.%20%20Granny%20would%20mix%20the%20Dumpling%20in%20her%20washing%20up%20bowl,%20sterilised%20with%20boiling%20water,%20she%20didn't%20weigh%20anything%20it%20was%20a%20handful%20of%20this%20and%20a%20handful%20of%20that%20and%20she%20added%20a%20whole%20tub%20of%20mixed%20spice.%20We%20had%20such%20a%20laugh%20one%20Christmas%20when%20Granny%20put%20a%20piece%20of%20holly%20on%20top%20of%20the%20Dumpling%20and%20put%20it%20back%20in%20the%20oven%20to%20dry%20off%20after%20boiling%20(as%20you%20do).%20%20When%20she%20took%20it%20out,%20the%20PLASTIC%20holly%20had%20melted%20in%20a%20green%20pool%20on%20top%20of%20the%20dumpling!%20%20We%20just%20scraped%20it%20off%20and%20at%20the%20Dumpling%20anyway.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI'm%20not%20sure%20whether%20it%20was%20Mum's%20failure%20that%20put%20me%20off,%20or%20the%20fact%20that%20I%20am%20not%20really%20that%20keen%20on%20Dumpling,%20but%20I've%20only%20made%20it%20once,%20it%20worked%20okay%20but%20boiling%20puddings%20for%20hours%20is%20a%20luxury%20I%20really%20don't%20have.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHaving%20learned%20a%20few%20things%20about%20cakes%20and%20puddings%20in%20the%20Slow%20Cooker%20recently,%20%20I%20wondered%20whether%20it%20would%20be%20possible%20to%20cook%20a%20Cloutie%20Dumpling%20in%20the%20Slow%20Cooker%20as%20it%20has%20a%20sort%20of%20steaming%20effect.%20%20I%20decided%20against%20using%20a%20'clout'%20and%20lined%20the%20Slow%20Cooker%20with%20a%20baking%20parchment%20cake%20liner.%20%20I%20perused%20a%20number%20of%20different%20recipes%20for%20Cloutie%20Dumpling,%20every%20Scots%20Granny%20seems%20to%20have%20her%20own%20recipe,%20but%20none%20uses%20a%20whole%20tub%20of%20mixed%20spice!%20In%20the%20end%20I%20ditched%20the%20breadcrumbs%20and%20suet%20in%20favour%20of%20butter%20in%20this%20hybrid%20'Nae%20Clout'%20(No%20Cloth)%20Cloutie%20Dumpling,%20I%20don't%20pretend%20it's%20a%20real%20Cloutie%20Dumpling%20more%20a%20boiled/steamed%20fruit%20cake,%20but%20the%20smells%20coming%20from%20the%20pan%20and%20the%20finished%20texture%20is%20pretty%20good,%20without%20having%20your%20windows%20steamed%20up%20and%20constantly%20checking%20to%20see%20that%20there%20is%20still%20enough%20water%20in%20the%20pan!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESlow%20Cooker%20Cloutie%20Dumping%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPut%20the%20dried%20fruit,%20sugar,%20water,%20butter,%20spices%20and%20bicarbonate%20of%20soda%20into%20a%20pan%20and%20bring%20to%20the%20boil.%20%20Simmer%20for%2010%20minutes.%20%20Set%20aside%20until%20just%20warm.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20eggs%20a%20little%20at%20a%20time%20alternating%20with%20spoonfuls%20of%20the%20flour.%20%20Mix%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELine%20your%20Slow%20Cooker%20with%20baking%20parchment%20or%20a%20cake%20tin%20liner,%20cook%20on%20high%20for%202%201/4%20hours.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESlow%20cookers%20do%20vary%20in%20timing,%20so%20it%20may%20take%2015%20minutes%20either%20side%20of%20this%20time.%20%20If%20your%20cooker%20has%20a%20clear%20lid,%20you%20can%20see%20the%20change%20to%20the%20top%20of%20the%20dumpling%20as%20it%20bakes.%20%20I%20did%20test%20this%20one%20with%20a%20skewer%20after%201hr%2045%20minutes%20but%20the%20middle%20wasn't%20cooked.%20%20Lifting%20the%20lid%20does%20increase%20baking%20time,%20so%20do%20keep%20an%20eye%20on%20this%20as%20it%20reaches%20the%202%20hour%20mark.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20my%20entry%20for%20my%20own%20Slow%20Cooked%20Challenge,%20the%20theme%20this%20month%20is%20St%20Andrew's%20Day%20and%20what%20better%20way%20to%20celebrate%20than%20a%20Cloutie%20Dumpling!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20listening%20to%20BBC%20Radio%20Scotland's%20Kitchen%20Cafe%20programme%20last%20Friday,%20as%20I%20was%20on%20holiday%20from%20work,%20the%20programme%20was%20all%20about%20Food%20Blogging%20and%20I%20tweeted%20about%20the%20Cloutie%20Dumpling%20with%20'nae%20clout',%20I%20got%20a%20mention%20on%20the%20programme%20and%20the%20tweet%20below%20from%20Sue%20Lawrence,%20well%20known%20Scottish%20cookery%20and%20food%20write
