,%20but%20it%20is%20a%20fantastic%20film%20on%20so%20many%20levels.%20The%20acting%20is%20superb,%20the%20cinematography%20makes%20even%20the%20most%20desolate%20Nordic%20shoreline%20or%20humble%20kitchen%20scene%20seem%20fascinating%20and%20inviting,%20and%20the%20costumes%20and%20sets%20of%20the%2019th%20century%20Danish%20estates%20and%20humble%20cottages%20are%20splendid.%20Babette,%20the%20French%20live-in%20servant%20to%20two%20elderly%20Puritan%20spinster%20sisters,%20has%20the%20most%20fabulous%20hooded%20cloak%20designed%20by%20Karl%20Lagerfeld,%20which%20shields%20her%20from%20raging%20seaside%20storms%20and%20adds%20a%20mysterious%20allure%20to%20even%20the%20most%20mundane%20of%20her%20household%20chores.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20is%20a%20period%20drama%20and%20yet%20full%20of%20humor.%20The%20Danish%20sisters%20Martine%20and%20Philippa%20that%20take%20in%20the%20French%20Civil%20War%20refugee%20Babette%20seem%20to%20subsist%20on%20reconstituted%20outdoor-dried%20flounder%20and%20a%20horrendous%20concoction,%20Ale%20Bread,%20that%20involves%20more%20reconstituting,%20this%20time%20of%20dried%20bread%20hunks,%20into%20a%20unappealing%20porridge.%20The%20household%20cuisine%20gradually%20takes%20on%20more%20flavor%20and%20variety%20when%20Babette%20enters%20the%20scene,%20a%20change%20which%20is%20most%20eagerly%20welcomed%20by%20the%20shut-ins%20that%20Martine%20and%20Philippa%20bring%20food%20to%20as%20one%20of%20their%20charitable%20good%20works.%20When%20Babette%20leaves%20for%20a%20short%20time%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20film,%20the%20look%20on%20one%20of%20the%20invalid's%20face%20when%20he%20sees%20Ale%20Bread%20back%20in%20his%20house%20is%20priceless.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20then%20there%20is%20the%20metaphor%20of%20food%20and%20feasting%20as%20a%20way%20of%20celebrating%20life%20and%20good%20friends%20and%20even%20honoring%20God,%20as%20the%20sisters%20and%20their%20fellow%20elderly%20congregants%20find%20out%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20transformative%20meal%20that%20is%20the%20centerpiece%20of%20the%20film.%20I%20loved%20the%20change%20in%20the%20diners'%20faces%20as%20they%20go%20from%20grumpy%20to%20positively%20ecstatic%20(certainly%20the%20multiple%20glasses%20of%20fine%20wine%20helped)%20by%20the%20end%20of%20the%20meal.%20One%20of%20them,%20a%20pink-cheeked,%20bright-eyed%20woman%20named%20Solveig,%20steals%20the%20scene%20in%20this%20regard,%20taking%20a%20sip%20of%20water%20to%20refresh%20her%20palate%20before%20knocking%20back%20another%20glass%20of%20burgundy,%20taking%20care%20to%20lick%20every%20drop%20from%20her%20lips.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EScene%20stealer%20Solveig%20is%20third%20from%20the%20left%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20my%20culinary%20tip%20of%20the%20hat%20to%20this%20outstanding%20film,%20I%20wanted%20to%20make%20something%20French.%20Babette%20is%20the%20wise%20heroine%20that%20has%20found%20peace%20in%20her%20new%20homeland%20and%20with%20gentle%20Martine%20and%20Philippa,%20and%20wants%20to%20give%20them%20the%20gift%20of%20a%20fine%20meal%20to%20honor%20their%20dead%20father%20and%20religious%20leader.%20She%20spends%20all%20that%20she%20has%20to%20give%20them%20this%20present,%20brushing%20aside%20the%20sisters'%20protestations%20when%20they%20learn%20of%20it,%20with%20a%20simple%20declaration:%20%22a%20great%20artist%20is%20never%20poor.%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHusband%20Dan%20has%20recently%20discovered%20an%20insanely%20easy%20way%20to%20make%20homemade%20aioli,%20which%20we%20have%20been%20slathering%20on%20our%20sandwiches,%20dolloping%20on%20top%20of%20salads,%20and%20love%20alongside%20steamed%20artichokes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDan%20makes%20it%20in%20a%20drinking%20glass%20using%20an%20immersion%20blender.%20The%20trick%20is%20to%20choose%20the%20right%20glass.%20You%20want%20something%20with%20tall%20sides%20and%20that%20is%20just%20a%20little%20bit%20wider%20than%20the%20immersion%20blender%20so%20the%20tool%20can%20go%20up%20and%20down%20easily%20and%20you%20can%20see%20that%20the%20aioli%20is%20emulsifying%20and%20getting%20to%20the%20right%20creamy%20consistency.%20Here's%20his%20recipe:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20all%20ingredients%20except%20salt%20in%20your%20glass.%20Blend%20with%20immersion%20blender%20moving%20slowly%20up%20and%20down%20the%20glass%20until%20all%20ingredients%20have%20been%20mixed%20together%20and%20it%20is%20a%20creamy%20consistency.%20This%20takes%20a%20minute%20at%20most.%20Season%20with%20salt%20to%20taste.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMakes%201%20cup%20aioli.%20Store%20tightly%20covered%20and%20use%20within%20a%20week%20or%20so.%20Not%20a%20problem%20in%20our%20house.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThat's%20it!%20%20A%20remarkably%20easy%20recipe%20and%20one%20which%20adapts%20to%20other%20mix-in%20flavors,%20like%20Chipotles%20in%20Adobo%20sauce%20(that's%20the%20red%20in%20the%20photo%20above)%20,%20roasted%20red%20peppers,%20curry%20powder%20or%20fresh%20chopped%20herbs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMany,%20many%20bravos%20to%20Babette's%20Feast!%20Thanks%20to%20Culinary%20Adventures%20with%20Camilla%2
