%20is%20part%20of%20a%20memory%20of%20a%20family%20that%20is%20close%20to%20existing%20only%20in%20my%20mind.%20Our%20times%20in%20New%20York%20were%20filled%20with%20so%20much%20fun%20and%20laughter%20that%20it%20seems%20impossible%20that%20any%20new%20times%20in%20the%20city%20would%20ever%20truly%20compare.%20It%20sounds%20absolutely%20bizarre,%20but%20even%20amid%20the%20tourists%20and%20the%20traffic%20and%20the%20noise%20and%20the%20people%20rushing%20past%20me,%20I%20can%20get%20so%20caught%20up%20in%20remembering%20some%20moment%20walking%20down%2057th%20street%20with%20my%20grandfather%20or%20waiting%20on%20the%20%234%20train%20platform%20with%20my%20dad%20that%20I%20find%20myself%20just%20standing%20still%20in%20the%20middle%20of%20the%20sidewalk%20trying%20to%20catch%20my%20breath.%20And%20if%20you%E2%80%99ve%20ever%20wondered%20what%20it%20sounds%20like%20to%20have%20what%20feels%20like%205,000%20people%20scream%20at%20you%20at%20once,%20I%20highly%20recommend%20stopping%20dead%20on%20a%20sidewalk%20in%20Manhattan%20at%20rush%20hour.%20Good%20times.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBefore%20I%20get%20way%20too%20caught%20up%20in%20family%20history,%20I%E2%80%99ll%20tell%20you%20what%20may%20actually%20be%20the%20real%20reason%20I%20waiver%20on%20moving%20to%20the%20East%20Coast:%20the%20weather.%20Yeah,%20yeah,%20I%20know,%20I%20live%20in%20Chicago%20and%20it%E2%80%99s%20cold%20and%20windy%20and%20blah%20blah%20blah.%20But,%20y%E2%80%99all,%20the%20East%20Coast%20is%20extreme.%20For%20real.%20I%20had%20never%20seen%20as%20much%20snow%20as%20I%20did%20when%20I%20went%20to%20school%20in%20Poughkeepsie,%20which%20is%20just%201.5%20hours%20by%20train%20from%20NYC.%20I%20mean,%20it%20was%20up%20to%20our%20hips%20from%20January%20until%20April%20(for%20all%20of%20you%20wondering,%20it%20is%20too%20cold%20in%20Chicago%20to%20snow%20that%20much.%20I%E2%80%99m%20not%20saying%20cold%20is%20better%20than%20snow,%20it%E2%80%99s%20just%20what%20I%E2%80%99m%20used%20to).%20And%20summer%20in%20New%20York?%20Fuggedabouit.%20The%20Chi%20may%20be%20hot%20and%20humid,%20but%20at%20least%20we%20have%20a%20bit%20of%20lake%20breeze%20to%20cool%20us%20off.%20I%20spent%20many%20an%20NY%20summer%20trying%20to%20stay%20as%20still%20as%20possible.%20And%20right%20now,%20as%20we%20are%206%20weeks%20away%20from%20the%20official%20start%20of%20winter,%20I%E2%80%99m%20reading%20post%20after%20facebook%20post%20about%20how%20my%20New%20York%20friends%20are%20digging%20out%20from%20snow!%20In%20October!%20It%E2%80%99s%20a%20balmy%2054%20degrees%20and%20sunny%20in%20Chicago%20(although%20with%20the%20windchill%20it%20is%2048.%20Just%20trying%20to%20keep%20it%20honest).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnyhoo.%20One%20friend%20posted%20a%20picture%20of%20her%20deck%20covered%20in%20snow%20and%20said%20that%20she%20wanted%20soup,%20and%20I%20realized%20that%20I%20had%20a%20pumpkin%20soup%20recipe%20that%20had,%20like%20so%20many%20others,%20been%20waiting%20for%20a%20good%20story.%20I%20recognize%20that%20I%20haven%E2%80%99t%20necessarily%20provided%20that,%20but%20at%20least%20I%E2%80%99m%20posting%20a%20holiday%20specific%20recipe%20in%20time%20for%20you%20to%20make%20it%20before%20Halloween%20and,%20if%20you%E2%80%99re%20on%20the%20East%20Coast,%20at%20least%20I%20have%20something%20to%20keep%20you%20toasty%20over%20this%20cold%20weekend.%20Baby%20steps,%20friends,%20baby%20steps.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20love%20the%20kick%20that%20the%20curry%20adds,%20plus%20it%20complements%20the%20pumpkin%20in%20a%20way%20that%20is%20surprising%20given%20every%20other%20pumpkin-ish%20dish%20is%20sweet.%20I%20think%20milk%20would%20be%20a%20fine%20substitute%20for%20the%20cream%20and%20do%20not%20feel%20a%20shred%20of%20guilt%20over%20using%20canned%20pumpkin.%20Also,%20this%20could%20be%20totally%20vegetarian%20if%20you%20use%20vegetable%20stock/broth%20instead%20of%20chicken%20stock.%20The%20croutons%20are%20left%20over%20no%20knead%20bread,%20also%20an%20excellent%20way%20to%20heat%20up%20the%20house%20on%20a%20chilly%20day.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStay%20warm,%20New%20Yorkers!%20My%20heart%20may%20belong%20to%20the%20Second%20City,%20but%20you%20know%20I%E2%80%99ll%20always%20have%20a%20huge%20crush%20on%20you%E2%80%A6.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECurried%20Pumpkin%20Soup,%20from%20The%20Complete%20Book%20of%20Soups%20and%20Stews%20by%20Bernard%20Clayton,%20Jr.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMelt%20butter%20in%20medium%20(3%20quart)%20saucepan%20over%20medium%20heat.%20Add%20the%20onion%20and%20garlic,%20cover%20and%20cook%20until%20soft%20and%20translucent,%20about%208%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20pumpkin%20puree%20and%20stock.%20Stir%20well%20to%20mix.%20Add%20bay%20leaf,%20sugar,%20curry%20powder%20and%20nutmeg.%20Bring%20to%20a%20boil,%20lower%20to%20simmer%20and%20cook%20for%2030%20minutes.%20While%20soup%20is%20cooking,%20taste%20for%20seasoning.%20Add%20salt%20and%20pepper%20as%20needed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemove%20from%20heat%20and%20add%20cream%20(I%E2%80%99d%20temper%20the%20cream%20a%20bit%E2%80%93add%20a%20few%20tablespoons%20to%201/3%20cup%20of%20soup%20slowly%20to%20the%20cream,%20just%20to%20bring%20the%20cream%20up%20in%20temperature.%20When%20you%20add%20the%20cream%20to%20the%20soup%20it%20won%E2%80%99t%20curdle).%20Return%20to%20heat%20only%20to%20bring%20temperature%20of%20the%20soup%20back%20to%20hot.%20Do%20not%20allow%20to%20simmer%E2%80%93rising%20steam%20only.%20Serve%20in%20hot%20soup%20bowls.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20Loading...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERelated%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
