I made this cake last spring. Twice. In one day. This is round #2.
This is round #1. Epic baking fail. I wanted to cry. But, I didn't. I immediately started over. I knew what I did wrong, and I will admit what it was, because I love you guys. I don't want you to make my same mistakes. Plus, no matter how hard I tried-- I was not happy with my finished pictures. So, I never published this recipe. After careful debate with myself, I decided it would be worth poking fun at myself--to show that I do have cooking/baking failures. I just don't share them with you. Until now. .%20%20If%20made%20correctly,%20according%20to%20Cook's%20Country%20Magazine%20(April%202010),%20%22Like%20the%20flower%20it's%20named%20for,%20this%20orange-kissed%20angel%20food%20cake%20is%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Escented%20and%20sweet,%20with%20golden%20yellow%20and%20pale%20orange%20hues.%22%20%20That%20sounds%20like%20a%20lovely%20spring%20cake!%20The%20only%20angel%20food%20cakes%20I've%20ever%20made,%20comes%20from%20a%20box%20of%20cake%20mix.%20%20I%20wanted%20to%20make%20my%20own,%20from%20scratch.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20we%20begin%20by%20processing%20sugar%20and%20cake%20flour%20to%20be%20fine%20and%20%22powdery%22.%20%20My%20food%20processor%20works%20great%20for%20this--%20however%20I%20will%20forewarn%20you%20that%20billows%20of%20fine%20flour%20and%20sugar%20will%20look%20like%20smoke%20%20coming%20out%20of%20the%20top!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWell,%20that%20was%20easy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20now%20we%20slowly%20fold%20in%20the%20flour/sugar%20mixture.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELookin'%20good.%20I%20reserve%203%20cups%20of%20this%20batter%20for%20the%20%22Daffodil%22%20batter%20and%20set%20it%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20here%20is%20where%20I%20totally%20blew%20it.%20%20What%20did%20I%20do?%20Ready?%20I%20greased%20the%20pan.%20%20I%20know,%20I%20know...%20the%20directions%20said%20%22don't%20grease%20the%20pan%22.%20But,%20somehow,%20my%20brain%20didn't%20listen.%20I%20get%20it%20now.%20The%20cake%20needs%20to%20stick%20while%20it%20bakes.%20Period.%20%20So,%20let's%20continue%20on,%20shall%20we?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20the%20reserved%20angel%20food%20cake%20batter%20has%20six%20egg%20yolks%20%20and%20orange%20extract%20added%20in,%20and%20it's%20poured%20on%20top.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20smooth%20the%20batter,%20then%20swirl%20a%20knife%20through%20it,%20to%20combine.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20Round%20%231%20(aka,%20baking%20fail)%20I%20baked%20the%20cake%20until%20toothpick%20inserted%20into%20center%20of%20cake%20came%20out%20clean%20with%20no%20crumbs%20attached,%2040%20to%2045%20minutes.%20%20Mistake%20%232:%20%20I%20should%20have%20used%20a%20very%20long%20skewer%20or%20even%20a%20spaghetti%20length%20noodle.%20%20Inserting%20a%20short%20toothpick%20was%20totally%20deceitful,%20or%20I%20would%20have%20realized%20the%20cake%20was%20still%20not%20quite%20baked.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20knew%20I%20was%20in%20trouble,%20when%20I%20inverted%20the%20angel%20food%20cake%20pan%20onto%20it's%20built-in%20legs%20(instead%20of%20inverting%20it%20on%20a%20wine%20bottle,%20for%20example).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhoomp!%20%20The%20cake%20slide%20down,%20and%20I%20knew%20something%20wasn't%20right.%20My%20husband%20sympathized%20with%20me,%20but%20he%20said%20nothing.%20He's%20a%20very%20smart%20man.%20Colorful%20metaphors%20were%20spinning%20in%20my%20head.%20%20I%20tossed%20the%20whole%20unbaked,%20fallen%20mess%20into%20the%20garbage.%20I%20hate%20wasting%20ingredients.%20But%20I%20needed%20redemption...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20time,%20I%20did%20not%20grease%20the%20angel%20food%20cake%20pan%20and%20I%20stuck%20a%20long%20skewer%20deep%20into%20the%20cake.%20When%20I%20inverted%20the%20pan,%20the%20cake%20did%20not%20fall%20out.%20%20Once%20it%20was%20cooled,%20the%20removable%20bottom%20easily%20removed%20the%20cake.%20%20Success!%20Redemption!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20glaze,%20I%20used%20cream%20cheese,%20thawed%20orange%20juice%20concentrate%20and%20confectioners%20sugar.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20glaze%20should%20have%20set%20after%2030%20minutes,%20but%20it%20was%20still%20a%20bit%20on%20the%20wet%20side.%20At%20this%20point,%20I%20was%20done.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20envisioned%20setting%20up%20my%20shot%20with%20a%20vase%20of%20daffodils%20in%20the%20background.%20That%20didn't%20happen,%20and%20I%20was%20losing%20my%20natural%20lighting.%20%20(To%20be%20honest,%20I%20think%20I%20was%20mentally%20done%20with%20this%20recipe.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20wanted%20to%20know%20if%20the%20cake%20was%20worth%20making%20it%20twice,%20in%20one%20day.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETASTING%20NOTES:%20%20The%20angel%20food%20cake%20was,%20indeed,%20very%20tender.%20It%20didn't%20have%20that%20rubbery%20texture%20that%20some%20store%20bought%20versions%20do.%20The%20orange%20daffodil%20part%20of%20the%20cake--%20hmmmm.%20Good,%20but%20I%20was%20a%20tad%20bit%20underwhelmed.%20%20The%20glaze%20was%20good,%20but%20it%20just%20didn't%20set%20up.%20%20Bottom%20line,%20I%20learned%20some%20valuable%20baking%20lessons%20here.%20%20%231:%20Read%20the%20directions,%20and%20follow%20them!%20%232:%20Never,%20ever,%20grease%20an%20angel%20food%20pan!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20have%20mixed%20reviews,%20but%20I%20don't%20blame%20Cook's%20Country.%20%20I%20take%20responsibility.%20Making%20angel%20food%20cake%20isn't%20that%20difficult,%20actually.%20But%20it%20sure%20uses%20a%20lot%20of%20eggs!%20%20Would%20I%20make%20this%20recipe%20again?%20Maybe,%20but%20the%20angel%20food%20cake%20recipe,%20by%20itself%20is%20one%20I%20would%20definitely%20make%20again.%20I%20love%20angel%20food%20cake%20as%20the%20base%20for%20strawberry%
