- Sprinkle soda on cut up dates; pour boiling water over and set aside. Cream butter and sugar; add in Large eggs, then flour, salt, and date mix alternately. Add in nuts and vanilla. Bake in 5 (#2) cans, well greased, in 325 degrees oven 1 hour.
- Sauce: Mix sugar, cornstarch, and nutmeg. Add in water and stir over medium heat till it boils. Remove from heat; add in butter and rum. Serve over date nut bread.
