  • 5 – 8 oz. cups fresh broccoli
  • 4 oz. sunflower seeds
  • 4 oz. raisins
  • 4 oz. cup crumpled cooked bacon
  • 1 cup of thawed frozen peas
  • 2 oz. cup of chopped red onion
  • 8oz mayonnaise
  • 4 oz. cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar

  1. To begin on this broccoli salad recipe, first combine the broccoli florets, sunflower seeds, raisins, chopped onion, peas and crumbled bacon into one large serving bowl. I like to add the raw sunflower seeds for a little more crunch to my salad which my family can’t seem to get enough of. Instead of the raisins, you could also use some halved red or purple grapes which are equally sweet, yet provide a fresher and juicier flavor. In order to conceal the raw onion taste from my sons who don’t particularly appreciate that, I substitute it with some finely chopped Wala Wala onion.
  2. Next, whisk together your mayonnaise, sugar and vinegar separately in a large cup or bowl. My wife is currently on a diet so she prefers to cut back on the fat by substituting the mayo with some Greek yoghurt or sour crème. In addition to tasting just as good, the salad is also much healthier. She sometimes also opts to cut down on the sugar she uses to just ¼ cups.
  3. Add your dressing to the salad and toss it such that it mixes well.
  4. Allow your salad to chill well before you serve it. This salad goes particularly well with grilled dishes.
