We will assume this event will be an adult gathering, so if children will be present, we need to provide suggestions to make them enjoy the party without any side effects except a bit of sugar...but we do have a couple of non-alcoholic punches lined up - and there is always the 'Shirley Temple'. But we'll address the needs of the young ones later.

For the moment, let's make a list of possible beverage options. You will know your guests and their preferences for liquid refreshment better than we who manage this theme, so plan accordingly. Remember, this is a NO party and rum, bourbon, vodka and gin are the main players, with some liqueurs in the mix.

And when you see "NO", we're meaning New Orleans, not 'no'.

Ingredientes

  • BEER - time to prowl the best-stocked liquor purveyor you can find.
  • Jax and Blackened Voodoo are two NO beers. If you can't find these, we suggest a couple of microbrewery stars, your know your area, shop accordingly. Many guests might prefer a 'light' brew, so figure them into your purchase. Some of you are 'keggers' and no suggestion from here will distract you, you know what to get for your crowd.
  • WINE
  • Chablis Cassis -
  • 4-1/2 oz Chablis wine, chilled
  • 1/2 tsp Creme de Cassis
  • lemon peel
  • Pour the Chablis into a champagne glass, add the creme de cassis. Stir gently and add a twist of lemon peel. (serves 1)
  • Sangria -
  • 2 bottles of Burgundy wine
  • 1 qt fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 3 lemons, juiced
  • 5 limes, juiced
  • 1 C granulated sugar
  • 1 qt club soda
  • slices of orange, lemon and lime for garnish
  • In a large container combine the wine, OJ, lemon and lime juices and sugar. Sitr and chill thoroughly. Add the club soda just before serving. Serve the Sangria in tall glasses over ice garnished with slices of the fruits. Makes 1 gallon.
  • SERIOUS BEVERAGES - There are many, but we'll start with a couple of the better-known.
  • Hurricane Punch -
  • 1 (46 oz) can Hawaiian Punch (really)
  • 1 (12oz) can frozen orange juice
  • 1 (6oz) can frozen lemonade
  • 3/4 C granulated sugar (optional)
  • amber rum (any brand will do)
  • orange slices
  • Maraschino cherries
  • crushed ice
  • In a large pitcher combine the punch, OJ, lemonade and sugar. Fill 16oz glasses with crushed ice and add 4oz of amber rum per glass (this should help you figure how many bottle of rum you will buy). Fill the glasses with the punch mixture. Serve garnished with orange slices and cherries.
  • Creole Creepers -
  • 1 fifth bourbon (reserve 1/2 C)
  • 1 pint gin
  • 4 (6oz) cans frozen pink lemonade
  • 2 (20oz) cans grapefruit juice
  • 1 (20oz) can pineapple juice
  • 3 T grenadine syrup OR honey
  • 1 (9oz) jar, Maraschino cherries with stems (reserve the juice)
  • In a large container combine the bourbon, gin, lemonade, grapefruit juice, pineapple juice and grenadine. Pour the reserved cherry juice into the mixture. Pour the reserved bourbon over the cherries in the jar and marinate them 24 hours. Serve the drink over crushed ice. Top each glass with a marinated cherry. makes 1 gallon.

  2. Bloody Mary -
  3. 8 oz tomato juice
  4. 1-1/2oz vodka
  5. 1 tsp Pickapeppa sauce
  6. 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  7. 1/4 tsp sugar
  8. 1/4 tsp fine salt
  9. 1 lemon or lime, juiced
  10. 1 dash of Tabasco sauce
  11. 2 celery sticks
  12. Mix all ingredients except the celery in a cocktail shaker.
  13. Pour the mixture into 8-oz cocktail glasses filled with ice cubes.
  14. Garnish the Bloody Mary with a celery stick. Serves 2
  15. OTHER DRINK OPTIONS -
  16. Old Fashioned, Whiskey Sour, Margaritas, Frozen Daiquiris, Pina Colada, Mint Julep
  17. NON-ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES - see, we promised)
  18. Cranberry-Apple Punch -
  19. 3 qts water
  20. 2 C granulated sugar
  21. 2 C strong tea, cooled
  22. 2 (6oz) cans, frozen lemonade, thawed
  23. 2 qts cranberry juice cocktail
  24. 1 qt apple juice
  25. 2 C fresh orange juice
  26. In a large pot heat the water and sugar to boiling, stirring constantly until the sugar is dissolved. Cool the syrup thoroughly.
  27. Chill all the other ingredients. Just before serving, combine everything in a large punch bowl. Serves 60.
  28. Warm Cranberry Punch -
  29. 1 qt fresh cranberries
  30. 4 qts water
  31. 3 C granulated sugar
  32. 1 C cinnamon candies
  33. 12 whole cloves
  34. 3 oranges, juiced
  35. 3 lemons, juiced
  36. In a saucepan, boil the cranberries in 1 qt of water until they pop open. Strain the cranberries and discard them, reserving the the liquid. In a separate pot, combine and bring to a boil 3 qts water, sugar, cinnamon candies, and the cloves. Boil for 10 minutes. Strain the mixture and discard the cloves. Mix the cranberry mixture and the sugar mixture together. Add the citus juices and keep the punch warm, but do not allow it to boil. Serve from a glass carafe. Serves 40.

    Amos...these are some serious and very creative concoctions.

    Great to keep these recipes nearby for when my guests want to experiment with something new.
