Dear Food Diary:
El Colmado at Gotham West Market has been on my list from the minute they posted a photo of percebes. Before their Instagram post, I had only seen these intriguing sea creatures on t.v.
Last Saturday, I was all excited, only to be told they weren’t in stock. With that, I proceeded to eat and drink my disappointment away with tapas y vino. And boy, was I glad we stayed.
El Colmado is run by Chef Seamus Mullen who also owns Tertulia, another spot on my infinite eats list.
Bright counter seating. Highly appreciated when taking food photos. It has a rustic home feel. Great friendly service.

.%20Whenever%20it%E2%80%99s%20on%20the%20menu,%20I%20have%20to%20have%20it.%20So%20I%20can%20experience%20that%20love%20affair%20again.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWatching%20her%20cut%20was%20beautiful%20and%20torturing%20at%20the%20same%20time.%20I%20had%20an%20urge%20to%20jump%20over%20that%20counter%20and%20take%20a%20bite,%20a%20big%20bite,%20like%20a%20hungry%20beast%20in%20the%20wild.%20StalkerBoy%20had%20to%20hold%20me%20back%20and%20calmed%20me%20down.%20As%20he%20looked%20up%20the%20cost%20of%20a%20whole%20leg%20on%20this%20phone%20(about%20$1000+),%20he%20promised%20to%20buy%20me%20one%20in%20the%20future.%20Until%20then,%20I%E2%80%99ll%20be%20getting%20my%20fix%20here.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhat%20I%20loved%20about%20El%20Colmado%E2%80%99s%20serving%20is%20their%20side%20of%20wonderfully%20citrusy%20olives%20and%20a%20crusty%20tomato%20painted%20bread.%20The%20fragrantly%20bright%20flavors%20really%20brought%20it%20all%20to%20life.%20Some%20restaurants%20serve%20it%20sort%20of%20plain,%20which%20I%20could%20do%20at%20home.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBack%20to%20the%20Iberico%E2%80%A6%20that%20distinct%20lingering%20salty%20sweet%20buttery%20finish%20%E2%80%93%20just%20plain%20sexy.%20The%20acorn%20diet%20and%20aging%20really%20creates%20magic%20in%20these%20black%20feet%20pigs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHuevo%20al%20Diablo%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStalkerBoy%20had%20one%20of%20their%20pretty%20deviled%20eggs%20with%20smoked%20bacalao%20and%20roasted%20peppers.%20I%20eat%20a%20lot%20of%20eggs%20at%20home,%20nothing%20as%20fancy%20as%20this%20of%20course,%20but%20I%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20eggcited%20enough%20to%20order%20a%20piece%20for%20$2.%20He%20enjoyed%20it%20though.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlcachofas%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBeautifully%20fried%20baby%20artichokes%20over%20arugula,%20sage,%20and%20lemon.%20Finished%20with%20a%20garlic%20aioli.%20Creamy,%20fresh,%20tart,%20peppery,%20slightly%20bitter%20and%20crispy.%20If%20this%20is%20what%20you%20call%20a%20salad,%20then%20sign%20me%20up%20as%20a%20vegetarian%20please.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPulpo%20a%20la%20Plancha%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20octopus%20had%20a%20nice%20chard.%20Smokey%20and%20a%20little%20spicy.%20Tender%20and%20meaty.%20The%20bite%20size%20potatoes%20hiding%20underneath%20soaked%20all%20those%20flavors.%20Major%20yum.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESecreto%20Iberico%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnother%20Iberico%20dish%20you%20ask?%20Well,%20have%20you%20ever%20said%20no%20to%20being%20loved?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUnlike%20the%20hand%20cut%20cured%20version,%20this%20is%20prepared%20a%20la%20plancha.%20With%20just%20the%20right%20amount%20of%20fat%20and%20tender%20juicy%20smokey%20burst%20in%20my%20mouth.%20Crisp%20around%20the%20edges.%20There%20was%20an%20umami%20quality%20to%20it,%20probably%20from%20the%20smoked%20miso.%20And%20that%20roasted%20tomato%20paste%20cut%20it%20with%20a%20delicate%20sweet%20tartness.%20So%20good,%20StalkerBoy%20wanted%20another%20portion%20all%20to%20himself.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20this%20delicious%20high,%20our%20grand%20finale%20dish%20took%20a%20while%20to%20arrive.%20The%20staff%20were%20super%20apologetic.%20We%20were%20lost%20dreaming%20of%20Iberico%20and%20happy%20about%20the%20extra%20pour%20of%20wine.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20while%20later,%20our%20Arroz%20Negro%20finally%20arrived%20and%20because%20of%20the%20long%20wait,%20it%20was%20on%20the%20house%20(much%20appreciated).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EArroz%20Negro%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20also%20seen%20Instagram%20photos%20of%20their%20popular%20dish.%20Couldn%E2%80%99t%20wait%20to%20dig%20in.%20Specially%20with%20uni%20(my%20other%20true%20love).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20cuttlefish%20ink%20coated%20each%20grain%20of%20rice%20evenly.%20The%20rice%20was%20cooked%20right.%20Uni%20and%20avocado,%20a%20double%20creamy%20team.%20With%20chunks%20of%20cuttlefish%20mixed%20in.%20It%20seemed%20like%20it%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20go%20wrong.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThough%20it%20had%20that%20deep%20seafood%20richness,%20and%20bottom%20of%20the%20ocean%20feel%20(in%20a%20good%20way).%20There%20was%20a%20tart%20component%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20shake%20off.%20Not%20sure%20if%20it%20was%20an%20extra%20squeeze%20of%20lime%20or%20something.%20Surprisingly,%20not%20a%20dish%20I%20would%20order%20again.%20It%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20bad%20by%20any%20means,%20but%20all%20together%20it%20just%20didn%E2%80%99t%20work%20for%20me.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOverall,%20I%20really%20enjoyed%20the%20tapas%20y%20vino%20lunch.%20Can%E2%80%99t%20wait%20to%20be%20back%20on%20a%20day%20percebes%20is%20actually%20available.%20And%20of%20course%20try%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20food%20at%20Gotham%20West%20Market.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EP.S.%20Chubby%E2%80%99s%20Rating:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Egothamwestmarket.com%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E600%2011th%20Avenue%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E212.582.7940%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
