.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20example,%20a%20few%20years%20ago%20the%20media%20reported%20that%20vitamin%20E%20supplementation%20increased%20prostate%20cancer%20risk.%20The%20study%20examined%20synthetic,%20isolated%20form%20vitamin%20E%20%20and%20not%20naturally%20derived%20vitamin%20E%20(i.e.%20mixed%20tocopherols).%20There%20are%20massive%20differences%20between%20the%20two%20and%20needless%20to%20say%20other%20studies%20have%20shown%20naturally%20derived%20vitamin%20E,%20whether%20from%20diet%20or%20supplements,%20has%20the%20opposite%20effect.%20However,%20when%20the%20media%20reports%20this%20it%20simply%20reads%20that%20%E2%80%9Cvitamin%20E%20increases%20cancer%20risk.%E2%80%9D%20Never%20mind%20what%20kind%20of%20vitamin%20E.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20latest%20casualty%20of%20the%20war%20against%20supplements%20is%20fish%20oil.%20The%20headlines%20in%20last%20three%20weeks%20have%20contained%20scathing%20reports%20declaring%20its%20ineffectiveness%20across%20a%20broad%20range%20of%20health%20outcomes,%20especially%20with%20respect%20to%20reducing%20cardiovascular%20disease.%20This%20conclusion%20was%20drawn%20based%20upon%20a%20meta-analysis%20of%2024%20studies%20last%20year%20in%20JAMA%20(Journal%20of%20the%20American%20Medical%20Association).%20It%20examined%20studies%20dating%20from%202005-2012%20and%20found%20that%20of%20the%2024%20studies%20examined,%20only%202%20reported%20benefit%20from%20omega-3%20supplementation.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20of%20the%20primary%20studies%20(also%20a%20meta-analysis)%20examined%20in%20the%20JAMA%20study%20was%20highly%20flawed,%20and%20consequently%20was%20used%20by%20the%20media%20in%202012%20to%20draw%20the%20very%20same%20conclusions.%20%20For%20example,%20only%2020%20of%203,635%20studies%20the%20authors%20in%20the%20meta-analysis%20examined%20were%20used.%20This%20is%20an%20extremely%20limited%20representation%20of%20the%20research%20on%20fish%20oil%20for%20cardiovascular%20disease%20events.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlso,%20half%20of%20the%20studies%20it%20cited%20used%20an%20omega-3%20dose%20of%20less%20than%201000%20milligrams%20daily,%20which%20in%20most%20cases%20is%20far%20too%20little%20to%20be%20of%20significant%20benefit%20.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFurthermore,%20my%20main%20point%20is%20to%20reveal%20the%20awful%20journalism%20that%20surrounds%20these%20studies.%20For%20example%20an%20article%20published%20by%20Tech%20Times%20said%20the%20following:%20%E2%80%9CThere%20has%20been%20no%20hard%20evidence%20of%20any%20health%20benefit%20of%20fish%20oil.%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%E2%80%99m%20not%20sure%20what%20hard%20evidence%20the%20author%20needs%20beyond%20even%20just%20a%20handful%20of%20positive%20studies%20from%20respected%20medical%20journals%20(of%20there%20are%20many).%20They%20are%20clearly%20biased%20or%20just%20plain%20ignorant%20to%20make%20such%20a%20sweeping%20conclusion.%20This%20is%20journalism%20at%20its%20very%20worst.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIronically,%20the%20week%20after%20all%20of%20the%20media%20attention%20another%20new%20study%20came%20out%20showing%20the%20benefits%20of%20fish%20oil.%20%20The%20study%20showed%20that%20taking%202000%20mg%20of%20fish%20oil%20twice%20daily%20improves%20arterial%20stiffness,%20an%20important%20factor%20in%20cardiovascular%20disease.%20Furthermore,%20the%20improvement%20was%20seen%20in%20only%2012%20weeks.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
