Who says low fat desserts can't be delish! This homey dessert can be jazzed up for company and it is a nice way to end a heavy meal.

The cooking method used, is a water bath, common for custard and cheesecake baking to produce a creamy smooth dessert

One may play around with the recipe using Splenda for baking in the custard mixture( not syrup part ) to reduce the quantity of full sugar in the recipe.

  • 1/4 cup sugar ( for dry method to make the syrup )
  • 12 oz, evaporated skim milk
  • 1/2 cup skim milk
  • 1, 8 oz carton of egg substitute,
  • 1/4 cup more sugar
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract or good quality vanilla extract
  • 2 cups fresh ( sliced ) fruit ( example strawberries,blueberries, raspberries, peaches for example)
  • Optional; mint leaves, whipped cream

Direcciones

  1. In a small heavy duty pan, over med-hi heat , heat sugar till it dissolves and becomes golden and syrupy.
  2. Do not stir pan and watch carefully to not overcook sugar
  3. Quickly pour and divide into 6 glass or Pyrex custard cups and set aside
  4. Combine both kinds of milk products and heat in sauce pot until hot ( not boiling )
  5. Beat the egg product and remaining 1/4 cup sugar
  6. Stir in 1 cup of hot milk mixture into egg/sugar mixture and mix well
  7. Then pour that into the remaining hot milks and stir well
  8. Pour mixture into the 6 caramel coated custard cups
  9. Place custard cups in a pan filled with hot water that comes up to one inch level
  10. Bake in a preheated 325F oven until custard is set and jiggles, about 25 minutes
  11. Remove custard cups from water bath
  12. Let them cool on rack
  13. Then chill very well, about 4 hours
  14. Loosen edges with a tip of knife and invert custard onto a small dessert plate
  15. Surround and garnish with fresh fruit of choice.
  16. Add a mint leaf and dollop of whipped cream atop each flan if desired
