,%20Taicheng%20(%E5%8F%B0%E6%88%90),%20and%20Guangzhou%20(%E5%B9%BF%E5%B7%9E).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20post%20will%20cover%20the%20China%20portion%20of%20my%20trip.%20I%20also%20went%20to%20Hong%20Kong%20for%203%20days,%20which%20I%20will%20cover%20in%20another%20post.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20was%20my%20second%20time%20traveling%20to%20China.%20I%20went%20back%20about%2015%20years%20ago,%20and%20I%20barely%20remember%20a%20thing.%20What%20I%20did%20remember%20was%20that%20the%20food%20was%20always%20fresh,%20and%20really%20good.%20Gary%20didn%E2%80%99t%20actually%20catch%20his%20own%20chicken,%20but%20these%20chickens%20laid%20fresh%20eggs%20for%20us%20everyday!%20We%20arrived%20in%20China%20at%20about%2011:30%20in%20the%20evening.%20After%20going%20through%20customs,%20we%20were%20finally%20out%20of%20the%20airport%20at%20about%202%20am%20in%20the%20morning%20(with%2017%20people,%20it%20took%20a%20while).%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20get%20a%20picture%20of%20our%20first%20meal%20back,%20but%20I%20did%20get%20a%20video:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20moving!%20I%20was%20shaking%20it%20with%20my%20chopsticks.%20I%20promise%20this%20stuff%20isn%E2%80%99t%20gross!%20Even%20Gary%20ate%20it!%20Our%20second%20day%20back,%20we%20met%20up%20with%20some%20distant%20relatives%20of%20Gary%E2%80%99s.%20We%20ate%20at%20a%20local%20restaurant%20near%20the%20bus%20station%20in%20Taicheng.%20Seriously,%20for%20about%20$35%20USD,%20we%20were%20able%20to%20have%20a%206%20course%20meal,%20which%20included%20fish%20(in%20soup%20and%20a%20dish),%20shrimp,%20roast%20goose,%20and%20cauliflower%20(one%20of%20the%20main%20crops).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20next%20day,%20we%20went%20to%20my%20parent%E2%80%99s%20home%20in%20the%20village.%20It%E2%80%99s%20not%20actually%20livable,%20but%20people%20don%E2%80%99t%20sell%20their%20houses%20in%20China,%20even%20if%20it%E2%80%99s%20been%20vacant%20for%20a%20long%20time.%20While%20we%20were%20there,%20Gary%20tried%20sugarcane%20for%20the%20first%20time.%20Gary%20trying%20sugarcane.%20My%20aunt%20peeling%20and%20chopping%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHe%20had%20a%20little%20trouble%E2%80%A6there%20was%20a%20lot%20of%20drool%20involved.%20You%20don%E2%80%99t%20actually%20eat%20it,%20but%20just%20chew%20it%20to%20get%20the%20juice,%20then%20spit%20it%20out.%20wild%20sugarcane%20growing%20in%20the%20village%20There%20are%20also%20lots%20of%20star%20fruit%20trees%20that%20grow.%20They%E2%80%99ve%20been%20around%20for%20a%20long%20time,%20and%20I%20remember%20climbing%20one%20way%20back%20when.%20The%20fruits%20are%20usually%20free%20for%20all,%20as%20long%20as%20you%20let%20the%20owner%20know%20you%E2%80%99re%20taking%20them.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20went%20to%20the%20city%20to%20do%20a%20little%20shopping.%20We%20had%20already%20eaten%20dim%20sum,%20but%20we%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20help%20but%20get%20some%20street%20food.%20We%20have%20egg%20waffles%20in%20NY,%20but%20these%20were%20bigger%20and%20fluffier,%20and%20what%20a%20great%20idea%20of%20them%20to%20give%20each%20person%20a%20stick%20to%20skewer%20them!%20It%20was%20so%20much%20cheaper%20too,%20at%20(if%20I%20recall)%20%C2%A58%20for%20a%20whole%20bag,%20roughly%20a%20little%20over%20$1.%20egg%20waffles%20(%E9%9B%9E%E8%9B%8B%E4%BB%94)%20everybody%20going%20after%20them%20once%20we%20got%20them%20from%20the%20street%20vendor%20We%20also%20went%20to%20a%20McDonald%E2%80%99s%20while%20we%20were%20in%20the%20city.%20I%20know%20it%20shouldn%E2%80%99t%20be%20a%20big%20deal,%20but%20chain%20restaurants%20around%20the%20world%20offer%20different%20things.%20We%20picked%20up%20some%20pies,%20but%20you%20won%E2%80%99t%20find%20apple%20pie%20there!%20They%20only%20have%20pineapple%20and%20taro.%20They%E2%80%99re%20also%20fried,%20not%20baked.%20We%20all%20thought%20it%20made%20it%20taste%20that%20much%20better.%20I%20personally%20like%20the%20pineapple%20one%20better,%20but%20they%20were%20both%20good!%20This%20cost%20us%20%C2%A57%20for%202%20pies,%20a%20little%20over%20$1.%20pineapple%20and%20taro%20pies%20from%20McDonald%E2%80%99s%20One%20of%20the%20things%20my%20parents%20do%20whenever%20they%20visit%20is%20to%20invite%20everybody%20from%20the%20village%20over%20for%20a%20dinner.%20They%20all%20meet%20around%20the%20community%20center%20and%20have%20an%208%20course%20feast%20for%20dinner.%20Nowadays,%20the%20current%20beverages%20of%20choice%20during%20banquets%20are%20Minute%20Maid%20orange%20juice,%20coconut%20milk,%20and%20a%20rice%20wine.%20Have%20I%20mentioned%20that%20nothing%20in%20China%20is%20made%20with%20high%20fructose%20corn%20syrup??%20All%20sodas%20are%20made%20with%20real%20sugar!%20fried%20rice%20vermicelli,%20goose,%20shrimp,%20cauliflower,%20pork,%20pickled%20turnips,%20chicken,%20vegetables,%20soup%20We%20went%20into%20town%20where%20we%20were%20looking%20around%20at%20the%20shops.%20We%20heard%20someone%20chanting%20out%20%E2%80%9C%E8%B1%86%E8%85%90%E8%8A%B1,%20%E7%B6%A0%E8%B1%86[sa]%E2%80%9D%20which%20meant%20%E2%80%9C(tofu)%20bean%20curd%20dessert,%20green%20bean%20tong%20sui%20(dessert)%E2%80%9D.%20This%20guy%20had%20recorded%20his%20voice%20and%20blasted%20it%20through%20a%20bullhorn.%20He%20lured%20me%20in%20from%20across%20the%20street.%20I%20thought%20he%20had%20a%20storefront,%20but%20he%20was%20selling%20them%20from%20a%20little%20cart%20that%20he%20%20wheeled%20around.%20The%20bean%20curd%20dessert%20is%20a%20silken%20dessert%20with%20a%20simple%20syrup.%20The%20green%20bean%20tong%20sui%20is%20similar%20to%20the%20red%20bean%20one%20that%20is%20served%20at%20the%20end%20of%20a%20Chinese%20banquet,%20except%20it%E2%80%99s%20made%20with%20green%20mung%20beans.%20This%20one%20in%20particular%20was%20thinner%20and%20drunk%20through%20a%20straw.%20It%20was%20a%20warm%20soup,%20not%20a%20cold%20drink.%20%C2%A51.50%20which%20is%20around%2025%C2%A2%20a%20cup,%20great%20deal!%20Gary%20wanted%20it%20again%20afterwards,%20but%20we%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20find%20him%20anymore!%20drinking%20my%20green%20bean%20tong%20sui%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20were%20in%20Guangzhou%20for%20the%20last%202%20days%20of%20our%20trip.%20I%20have%20no%20idea%20where%20in%20the%20city%20we%20were,%20since%20we%20had%20some%20relatives%20show%20us%20around.%20We%20went%20to%20a%20shopping%20area%20and%20walked%20around.%20We%20spotted%20a%20lot%20of%20storefronts%20that%20had%20drinks%20and%20food.%20One%20thing%20that%20caught%20my%20eye%20was%20the%20fresh%20cane%20juice%20made%20to%20order!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20guy%20fed%20the%20sugarcane%20through%20a%20machine%20that%20flattened%20and%20extracted%20the%20juice.%20He%20then%20bottled%20them%20up%20and%20sold%20them%20for%20%C2%A55%20a%20pop.%20I%20like%20chewing%20on%20sugar%20cane,%20and%20the%20first%20few%20sips%20were%20great.%20After%20half%20a%20bottle,%20I%20was%20kind%20of%20over%20it.%20Oh%20well.%20making%20fresh%20cane%20juice%20Our%20last%20food%20purchase%20before%20we%20left%20were%20candied%20strawberries%20and%20candied%20haw%20(%E5%B1%B1%E6%A5%82).%20The%20strawberries%20and%20haw%20are%20drenched%20in%20a%20syrup%20then%20hardened.%20I%20guess%20you%20can%20say%20it%E2%80%99s%20similar%20to%20a%20candied%20apple.%20They%20were%20a%20nice%20sweet%20treat%20to%20end%20the%20trip%20at%20%C2%A511%20for%20the%202%20sticks.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThanks%20for%20reading%20through%20the%20foodie%20recap%20of%20Southern%20China.%20Stay%20tuned%20for%20the%20Hong%20Kong%20food%20portion%20of%20my%20trip!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
