.%20Luckily,%20I%20work%20in%20nonprofit%20and%20my%20husband%20finance,%20so%20it%E2%80%99s%20never%20really%20been%20a%20problem%20for%20us.%20There%20are%20still%20a%20lot%20of%20pickers%20as%20many%20schools%20have%20off,%20but%20not%20nearly%20as%20many%20as%20on%20weekends.%20Generally%20by%20Columbus%20Day%20you%20need%20to%20get%20a%20bit%20creative%20in%20how%20you%20pick%20your%20apples.%20The%20remaining%20ones%20are%20high%20up%20on%20the%20trees%20and%20either%20a%20picker%20pole%20or%20some%20advanced%20climbing%20skills%20(shhh%E2%80%A6you%E2%80%99re%20not%20really%20allowed%20to%20do%20that%E2%80%A6)%20are%20required.%20But%20this%20year%20the%20mild%20summer%20produced%20an%20exceptionally%20long%20season%20with%20apples%20still%20abundant%20on%20their%20trees.%20We%20got%20our%20picker%20pole%20as%20usual%20and%20my%20husband%20insisted%20on%20using%20it,%20but%20you%20could%20pretty%20much%20grab%20at%20a%20branch%20and%20come%20away%20with%203%20or%204%20apples.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOur%20farm%20of%20choice%20is%20Wilklow%20Orchards%20by%20New%20Paltz,%20NY.%20Yes,%20it%E2%80%99s%20a%20bit%20far%20from%20Brooklyn,%20but%20that%20area%20holds%20a%20special%20place%20for%20us.%20My%20husband%20proposed%20to%20me%20at%20the%20top%20of%20Mohonk%20Mountain%20House%E2%80%99s%20rock%20scramble,%20just%2010%20minutes%20down%20the%20road.%20One%20of%20our%20favorite%20Hudson%20Valley%20Wineries,%20Whitecliff%20Vineyards%20that%20we%20served%20at%20our%20wedding,%20is%20just%2025%20minutes%20away.%20And%20Tuthilltown%20Spirits,%20with%20its%20exceptional%20baby%20bourbon,%20just%20as%20close.%20And%20then%20there%E2%80%99s%20the%20farm%20itself.%20Sprawling,%20friendly%20and%20usually%20less%20crowded%20than%20most%20places.%20Wicklow%20is%20one%20of%20my%20favorite%20farms%20in%20the%20NYC%20Greenmarket%20circuit%20and%20the%20source%20of%20my%2050-75%20annual%20pounds%20of%20tomatoes,%20depending%20how%20motivated%20I%20am.%20They%E2%80%99re%20not%20organic,%20almost%20impossible%20to%20achieve%20in%20the%20Northeast%20for%20apples,%20but%20minimal%20spray.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20usually%20walk%20away%20with%20about%2050%20pounds%20of%20apples.%20We%20pick%20half%20a%20bushel,%20our%20eyes%20always%20bigger%20than%20our%20stomaches%20and%20strength,%20plus%20get%20another%20half%20bushel%20of%20utility%20apples%20for%20making%20applesauce.%20It%E2%80%99s%20an%20invigorating%20experience,%20that%20is%20until%20you%20get%20home%20and%20have%2050%20pounds%20of%20apples%20sitting%20on%20your%20countertop.%20An%20apple%20a%20day%20is%20great%20but%20sometimes%20you%20need%20to%20get%20a%20bit%20more%20creative%20in%20how%20to%20consume%20all%20of%20those%20apples.%20Especially%20with%20just%20two%20in%20a%20household.%20We%20munch%20some%20for%20breakfast%20or%20dessert%20with%20some%20sharp%20cheese,%20but%20the%20rest%20of%20those%20apples,%20they%20go%20to%20work%20in%20some%20of%20my%20favorite%20apple%20centric%20recipes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20Loading...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERelated%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
