%20I%20fully%20blame%20my%20non-co-operative%20fan%20oven%20for%20that.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOver%20the%20last%20week%20or%20so%20though,%20I've%20discovered%20something%20that%20I%20think%20may%20be%20the%20answer%20to%20all%20my%20recent%20baking%20failures.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20you%20know%20when%20you%20have%20a%20problem%20and%20the%20solution%20is%20often%20right%20there%20infront%20of%20you?%20Well%20yes,%20this%20was%20one%20of%20those%20times.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow,%20I've%20been%20'making%20do'%20over%20the%20last%20couple%20months%20with%20the%20old%20oven%20that%20came%20with%20my%20new%20house.%20Let%20me%20point%20out%20to%20you%20the%20confusion%20this%20has%20caused%20me,%20from%20the%20fact%20that%20it%20has%20many%20a%20knob:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20oven%20itself%20has%20two%20parts:%20the%20main%20fan%20(convection)%20oven%20at%20the%20bottom,%20and%20then%20a%20'top'%20oven,%20on%20the%20er,%20top.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI've%20just%20been%20using%20the%20fan%20oven,%20which%20has%20caused%20me%20much%20grief%20in%20refusing%20to%20cook%20things%20evenly,%20burning%20things%20on%20top%20(or%20on%20one%20side)%20and%20just%20generally%20being%20stubborn%20and%20unhelpful.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20'top'%20oven%20though.%20Excusing%20the%20fact%20that%20it's%20labelled%20as%20an%20oven,%20I%20just%20assumed%20that%20this%20was%20a%20grill%20only,%20and%20that%20it%20was%20a%20ye%20olde%20name%20for%20it.%20In%20any%20case,%20I%20hadn't%20used%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen,%20I%20was%20looking%20at%20the%20knobs%20properly%20the%20other%20day%20(as%20you%20do)%20and%20noticed%20that%20the%20unlabelled%20knob%20next%20to%20the%20top%20oven%20one%20has%20a%20squiggly%20line%20on%20it%20-%20yes,%20denoting%20a%20grill.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20a%20tubelight,%20the%20realisation%20was%20slowly%20flickering%20into%20place%20in%20my%20mind.%20The%20top%20oven%20has%20oven%20temperature%20numbers%20on%20it,%20whereas%20the%20other%20knob%20has%20numbers%201-5%20on%20it.%20Up%20until%20now,%20I%20thought%20it%20was%20something%20extra%20to%20do%20with%20the%20electric%20hobs%20(despite%20there%20already%20being%20a%20knob%20for%20each%20of%20the%204%20hobs).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20no,%20they%20are%20of%20course,%20the%20grill%20settings.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOhhh.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20immediately%20decided%20to%20try%20and%20bake%20a%20pie%20in%20this%20top%20oven.%20A%20version%20of%20the%20volatile%20cheese%20tarts%20-%20in%20big%20tart%20form.%20A%20little%20risky,%20yes.%20But%20it%20worked%20perfectly.%20Obviously,%20the%20top%20oven%20is%20smaller%20than%20the%20main%20fan%20oven%20and%20so%20I%20won't%20be%20roasting%20any%20chickens%20in%20there%20at%20any%20point.%20But%20I%20think%20it's%20safe%20to%20say%20that%20I'll%20mainly%20be%20using%20this%20one%20from%20now%20on.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGah,%20I'm%20so%20slow%20sometimes!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20using%20premade%20pastry,%20go%20straight%20to%20step%203.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20Sift%20the%20flour%20into%20a%20large%20bowl%20with%20the%20salt.%20Rub%20in%20the%20diced%20butter%20to%20a%20breadcrumb%20mixture.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20Adding%20in%20a%20little%20water%20at%20a%20time,%20start%20to%20bring%20the%20mixture%20together%20to%20fold%20into%20a%20dough.%20Wrap%20and%20chill%20for%2030%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.%20Preheat%20the%20oven%20to%20190%20degrees%20C.%20Roll%20out%20the%20dough%20into%20a%20circle%20on%20a%20floured%20surface.%20Transfer%20to%20line%20a%208%E2%80%9D%20pie%20tin.%20Cover%20with%20foil%20and%20fill%20with%20baking%20beads.%20Bake%20for%2012-15%20minutes%20until%20lightly%20golden.%20Allow%20to%20cool.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.%20Put%20the%20oven%20back%20onto%20190%20degrees%20C.%20Mix%20the%20cheese%20with%20the%20beaten%20egg,%20followed%20by%20the%20cream.%20Carefully%20fold%20in%20the%20spring%20onions.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E5.%20Scatter%20the%20oregano%20over%20the%20base%20of%20your%20cooked%20pastry%20case.%20Pour%20in%20the%20cheesy%20spring%20onion%20mixture,%20then%20bake%20for%20about%2030%20minutes,%20until%20set%20%E2%80%93%20it%20should%20spring%20back%20a%20little%20when%20you%20gently%20press%20with%20your%20finger!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPie%20out.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERead%20my%20other%20Friday%20Pie%20Day%20adventures.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
