.%20For%20a%20little%20review%20of%20the%20book,%20(though%20I%20haven't%20cooked%20hardly%20anything%20from%20it),%20I%20can%20already%20say%20I%20love%20it%20because%20every%20recipe%20has%20a%20picture!%20I%20like%20knowing%20what%20I%20am%20getting%20myself%20into%20by%20making%20a%20recipe,%20and%20a%20picture%20says%20a%20lot%20more%20than%20words.%20I%20also%20like%20that%20the%20recipes%20are%20(supposedly)%20quick%20and%20easy.%20The%20book%20is%20also%20divided%20by%20seasons,%20and%20by%20cooking%20seasonally,%20you%20are%20cooking%20sustainably,%20which%20I%20also%20love.%20As%20for%20my%20recipe,%20though%20I%20varied%20it%20a%20lot,%20I%20chose%20the%20blackberry%20and%20ginger%20trifle.%20While%20blackberries%20are%20in%20season,%20they%20are%20a%20little%20pricey,%20so%20I%20blanched%20and%20sliced%20fresh%20peaches%20instead%20(I%20even%20found%20a%20way%20to%20blanch%20the%20peaches%20so%20as%20not%20to%20dirty%20a%20whole%20bunch%20of%20dishes!)%20I%20also%20added%20toasted%20almonds%20for%20crunch.%20Angel%20food%20cake%20replaced%20the%20pound%20cake,%20because%20it%20is%20lower%20in%20fat.%20I%20did,%20however,%20keep%20the%20real%20whipped%20cream,%20which,%20once%20it's%20aerated,%20adds%20fewer%20calories%20than%20you%20would%20think.%20Plus,%20I%20think%20fresh%20whipped%20cream%20is%20more%20natural%20than%20whipped%20topping,%20which%20has%20a%20weird%20chemical%20aftertaste%20in%20my%20opinion.%20I%20will%20warn%20you%20that%20I%20didn't%20put%20this%20in%20a%20pretty%20trifle%20dish%20because%20we%20were%20travelling---I%20used%20a%20plastic%20lidded%20container%20instead,%20so%20I%20hope%20you%20can%20see%20the%20layers%20of%20the%20trifle%20in%20the%20pictures...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20friends%20enjoyed%20my%20slightly%20butchered%20rendition%20of%20Martha's%20recipe---they%20enjoyed%20it%20in%20particular%20because%20they%20hoped%20the%20ginger%20would%20settle%20their%20stomachs%20after%20having%20eaten%20a%20lot!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGinger,%20Peach,%20and%20Toasted%20Almond%20Trifle%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20To%20toast%20the%20almonds,%20heat%20a%20small%20skillet%20over%20medium%20heat.%20Add%20the%20almonds%20and%20toast%20them%20until%20they%20are%20light%20brown;%20remove%20them%20from%20a%20pan%20and%20set%20them%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20To%20make%20the%20ginger%20syrup,%20combine%20the%20ginger,%201/2%20cup%20sugar,%20and%201/2%20cup%20water%20in%20a%20small%20saucepan%20over%20high%20heat.%20Bring%20to%20a%20boil,%20stirring%20until%20the%20sugar%20dissolves.%20Remove%20from%20heat%20and%20cover%20with%20a%20lid.%20Steep%20for%20at%20least%2020%20minutes%20or%20up%20to%20an%20hour%20(this%20can%20be%20made%20ahead.%20After%20steeping,%20remove%20the%20ginger%20pieces,%20put%20the%20syrup%20in%20a%20sealed%20container%20and%20refrigerate).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.%20To%20prepare%20the%20peaches,%20cut%20an%20%22x%22%20shape%20in%20the%20bottom%20of%20each%20peach.%20Add%20them%20to%20a%20large%20bowl%20and%20pour%20boiling%20water%20(use%20a%20kettle%20or%20even%20the%20microwave%20to%20boil%20the%20water---very%20easy%20that%20way)%20over%20them---enough%20to%20cover.%20Allow%20them%20to%20steep%20for%20about%203%20minutes%20or%20until%20the%20skin%20slips%20off%20with%20no%20resistance.%20Drain%20the%20hot%20water%20away%20and%20add%20enough%20cold%20water%20and%20ice%20cubes%20to%20cover%20the%20peaches.%20Once%20they%20are%20cool%20enough%20to%20handle,%20pull%20the%20skins%20off%20and%20cut%20each%20peach%20into%2012%20to%2016%20slices.%20Combine%20the%20peaches%20with%20half%20of%20the%20ginger%20syrup%20and%20the%20lemon%20juice.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.%20In%20a%20chilled%20bowl,%20add%20the%20cream%20and%20whip%20to%20soft%20peaks.%20Gradually%20add%20a%201/4%20cup%20of%20sugar%20while%20whipping.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E5.%20Slice%20the%20cake%20into%201/2%20-inch%20slices,%20and%20with%20a%20pastry%20brush,%20baste%20on%20the%20remaining%20syrup.%20Cut%20the%20slices%20into%20cubes.%20Place%20half%20the%20cubes%20in%20the%20bottom%20of%20the%20trifle%20dish.%20Add%20half%20of%20the%20peaches.%20Add%20half%20of%20the%20whipped%20cream,%20then%20sprinkle%20half%20of%20the%20almonds%20on%20top.%20Repeat%20each%20layer,%20finishing%20off%20the%20ingredients.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServings%20per%20recipe:%2012%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPer%20serving:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECalories:%20253%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFat:%209.8%20g%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESaturated%20fat:%204.8%20g%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECholesterol:%2027%20mg%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESodium:%20291%20mg%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECarbohydrates:%2039.1%20g%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFiber:%201.6%20g%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESugar:%2015.9%20g%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EProtein:%203.8%20g%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
