Receta Gothunai Rava Upma | Broken Wheat Upma
Another Upma variety made with broken wheat and very similar to rava upma in preparation. IT has a nice fluffy and separate grains texture very much similar to a pulav. You can load this with veggies and this can be a complete meal in itself for lunch or dinner. A very simple dish packed with satisfying flavours to begin a day.
Even though chutney is the common accompaniment for upmas, I like having this with onion raita. Since this has a texture similar to a Pulav, it goes well with raita too.
Gothunai Rava Upma | Broken Wheat Upma
- Upma made with broken wheat and very similar to rava upma in preparation
- Prep Time: 5 Mins | Cook Time: 10 Mins | Total Time: 15 Mins | Serves: 2-3
- Ingredients
- 1 Cup Gothumai Rava | Broken Wheat
- 3 Tbsp Oil
- 1/2 tsp Kadugu | Mustard seeds
- 2 Green chillies, slit lengthwise
- 3-4 Curry Leaves, Torn
- 1/2 Cup finely chopped Onions
- 1/2 Tbsp finely chopped ginger
- 1/2 Veggies (Carrots, Peas and Beans) finely chopped
- 1.5 to 2 Cups Water
- Salt to taste
- 2 Tbsp roasted Peanuts
Coriander leaves for garnishing
Instructions
Heat a Tbsp of oil in a Kadai | Pan. Roast the rava until it becomes aromatic and slightly starts changing colour. Transfer it to a bowl and keep aside.
Add the remaining oil and once it becomes hot, add the mustard seeds and once it splutters, add the green chillies, curry leaves and ginger and give a quick stir.
Then add the onions and sauté until it turns translucent. Then add the veggies and give a quick stir. Add 1.5 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
Turn the heat down and then add the rava gradually. Keep stirring it while adding the rava to avoid forming lumps.
Cover and cook until the rava becomes soft for about 3-4 minutes. Once it is cooked, it becomes fluffy and separate. Garnish it with coriander leaves and cashews.
Notes
The consistency is like a couscous salad. It will be fluffy and separate. Do not add more water and make it like a porridge. If there is excess water keep it in the flame for some more time.
This can be prepared with or without the Veggies.
