Gramma's Irish Soda Bread

Ingredientes

  • 4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 c. golden brown raisins
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp. water
  • 3 teaspoon baking pwdr
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 c. butter, softened
  • 1 1/3 c. buttermilk
  • 1 egg yolk

Direcciones

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking pwdr, soda and salt. Using a pastry blender or possibly 2 knives, cut in butter till mix resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in raisins.
  2. In a small bowl, combine buttermilk and egg; beat well. Add in to flour mix; stir till dry ingredients are just moistened.
  3. On a lightly floured board or possibly cloth, knead dough for about 3 min. Shape into flattened ball. Place on lightly greased baking sheet. Score top of dough with a sharp knife to create an "X, " about 1/2 inch deep into the top of the bread dough.
  4. In a c., combine egg yolk and water. Brush on top of bread. Bake at 375 degrees for 50-60 min. Serve hot. Yield: 1 loaf.
