?%20Yeah,%20that's%20hilarious%20--%20not%20bloody%20likely.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETherefore,%20I%20decided%20to%20give%20beef%20stew%20a%20second%20chance%20by%20making%20my%20own,%20with%20two%20ninja%20twists:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20added%20Guinness%20for%20a%20St.%20Patrick's%20Day%20theme%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20swapped%20out%20the%20beef%20for%20venison%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow,%20this%20is%20no%20ordinary%20venison,%20people.%20This%20is%20venison%20from%20my%20backyard.%20(Can't%20get%20much%20more%20local%20than%2020%20feet%20from%20the%20front%20door,%20now%20can%20you?)%20Not%20to%20mention%20venison%20with%20which%20I%20have%20had%20a%20running%20vendetta.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERegular%20readers%20will%20remember%20that%20one%20of%20the%20reasons%20I%20was%20so%20excited%20to%20move%20into%20our%20current%20home%20two%20years%20ago%20was%20because%20of%20the%20wee%20orchard%20on%20the%20property%20--%20lovely%20little%20apple,%20pear,%20cherry%20and%20peach%20trees,%20although%20none%20have%20been%20very%20prolific.%20Except%20for%20the%20pears,%20right%20after%20we%20moved%20in.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20of%20the%20pear%20trees%20was%20simply%20loaded%20with%20perfect%20little%20pears.%20I%20walked%20out%20to%20visit%20them%20every%20day%20and%20was%20making%20big%20plans%20for%20pear%20jam,%20pear%20bread%20and%20dried%20pear%20slices.%20I%20just%20kept%20waiting%20for%20the%20perfect%20time%20to%20harvest%20them.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EApparently%20I%20waited%20one%20damned%20day%20too%20long.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOver%20the%20course%20of%20one%20night,%20the%20deer%20that%20live%20on%20our%20property%20(no%20more%20than%202%20or%203%20at%20a%20time)%20ate%20all%20the%20pears%20they%20could%20reach.%20Being%20a%20fairly%20young%20pear%20tree,%20that%20was%20pretty%20much%20all%20of%20them,%20except%20for%20four%20measly%20little%20pears%20at%20the%20very%20top%20of%20the%20tree.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHence%20the%20vendetta.%20Or,%20to%20be%20really%20accurate,%20vendetta%20by%20proxy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENot%20being%20hunters%20ourselves,%20we%20have%20given%20a%20local%20man%20permission%20to%20hunt%20on%20our%20property,%20with%20the%20caveat%20that%20if%20he%20bags%20a%20deer,%20he%20must%20share%20some%20of%20the%20venison%20with%20us.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20first%20year,%20just%20after%20The%20Great%20Pear%20Massacre?%20No%20deer.%20So%20the%20vendetta%20simply%20simmered%20for%20another%20year.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20last%20year?%20Bingo:%20a%20large%20buck.%20And,%20true%20to%20his%20word,%20my%20proxy%20dropped%20off%20two%20packages%20of%20lean,%20lovely%20venison.%20Vendetta%20success.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGiven%20that%20this%20venison%20was%20truly%20and%20widely%20free%20ranging%20(based%20on%20watching%20first-hand%20its%20white-tailed%20ass%20crashing%20through%20the%20woods),%20it%20was%20very,%20very%20lean.%20Which%20I%20knew%20would%20likely%20translate%20into%20very,%20very%20tough;%20it%20seemed%20an%20ideal%20candidate%20for%20this%20beef%20stew.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EResults?%20I%20don't%20hate%20beef%20stew%20anymore!%20Especially%20when%20it's%20made%20with%20a%20hearty%20stout%20and%20vendetta%20venison.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20been%20advised%20that%20initially%20searing%20the%20meat,%20to%20lock%20in%20moisture,%20is%20key%20to%20making%20a%20good%20stew;%20I%20would%20have%20to%20agree,%20so%20don't%20skip%20that%20step.%20Additionally,%20the%20long,%20slow%20simmer%20really%20brought%20all%20the%20bold%20flavors%20together,%20and%20the%20Guinness%20added%20a%20dark%20richness%20that%20nicely%20complemented%20the%20venison.%20When%20(not%20if)%20I%20make%20it%20again,%20I%20think%20I'll%20try%20beef%20with%20red%20wine%20in%20place%20of%20the%20venison%20and%20Guinness.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20been%20hoping%20that%20this%20stew%20might,%20even%20just%20a%20little%20bit,%20taste%20of%20pears.%20In%20my%20head,%20I%20guess%20it%20did.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGuinness%20Beef%20(or%20Venison)%20Stew%20(adapted%20from%20Yummly)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20the%20olive%20oil%20a%20large,%20heavy-duty%20pot%20(I%20used%20an%20enameled%20cast-iron%20dutch%20oven)%20over%20medium-high%20heat.%20Add%20the%20meat%20and%20sear%20on%20each%20side,%20making%20sure%20each%20side%20gets%20fairly%20browned.%20Work%20in%20batches%20if%20you%20need%20to.%20Remove%20the%20meat%20and%20put%20in%20a%20small%20bowl;%20season%20with%20salt%20and%20pepper.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20onion,%20mushrooms%20and%20garlic%20and%20cook%20until%20the%20vegetables%20are%20tender%20(about%205%20minutes).%20Add%20the%20tomato%20paste%20and%20mix%20it%20all%20up,%20then%20sprinkle%20with%20flour%20and%20stir%20until%20all%20combined%20(it's%20pretty%20gloppy%20at%20this%20point).%20Next,%20stir%20in%20the%20beer,%20being%20sure%20to%20scrape%20up%20any%20bits%20left%20at%20the%20bottom%20of%20the%20pot.%20Add%20the%20broth%20and%20return%20the%20meat%20to%20the%20pot,%20cover%20and%20simmer%20for%20about%2035-40%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20carrots%20and%20potatoes%20to%20the%20pot,%20give%20it%20all%20a%20thorough%20stirring,%20recover%20and%20continue%20to%20simmer%20for%20another%2045-50%20minutes.%20At%20this%20point,%20you%20can%20just%20turn%20the%20heat%20off%20and%20leave%20it%20on%20the%20stove%20--%20it%20will%20remain%20nice%20and%20hot%20for%20at%20least%2020%20minutes%20or%20so,%20while%20you%20get%20the%20rest%20of%20your%20meal%20together.%20Season%20to%20taste%20with%20salt%20and%20pepper%20and%20garnish%20with%20parsley%20before%20serving.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
