%20just%20happen%20to%20be%20what%20is%20in%20the%20fridge.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20on%20a%20new%20diet%20kick.%20For%20the%20past%20few%20years%20Peter%20and%20I%20have%20more%20often%20than%20not%20eaten%20sandwiches%20(grilled%20or%20on%20toast)%20for%20lunch.%20Having%20quit%20smoking%20recently%20my%20weight%20is%20inexorably%20increasing%20-%20about%20a%20pound%20a%20week.%20This%20in%20spite%20of%20no%20change%20in%20my%20eating%20habits%20and%20gym%20visits%20(4%20times%20a%20week).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20occured%20to%20me%20the%20other%20day%20when%20Peter%20went%20off%20for%20the%20weekend%20to%20New%20Orleans%20that%20I%20should%20try%20skipping%20the%20sandwiches%20and%20getting%20%22soup%20creative.%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20one%20and%20only%20ingredient%20you%20absolutely%20must%20have%20for%20soup%20is%20liquid.%20I%20prefer%20low%20fat/low%20sodium%20chicken%20stock%20-%20often%20on%20sale%20at%20Safeway.%20Then%20just%20rummage%20around%20and%20see%20what%20you%20have.%20You%20could%20do%20something%20as%20simple%20as%20open%20a%20can%20of%20diced%20tomatoes,%20saute%20some%20onion%20and%20garlic,%20puree%20that%20with%20the%20tomatoes,%20add%20some%20broth%20and%20some%20seasonings%20and,%20voila,%20it's%20soup!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOn%20Saturday%20I%20took%20the%20easy%20way%20out%20and%20bought%20one%20of%20Safeway's%20%22Signature%22%20soups,%20Italian%20wedding%20soup.%20I%20really%20like%20it%20and%20I%20was%20feeling%20lazy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESunday%20I%20got%20creative.%20I%20opened%20a%20package%20of%20ramen%20noodles%20and%20thawed%20out%204%20oz.%20shrimp,%20removing%20their%20shells.%20Now,%20I%20wanted%20flavor%20but%20less%20sodium%20than%20one%20gets%20using%20the%20ramen%20flavor%20packet.%20So...I%20started%20with%201%20cup%20chicken%20broth%20and%20one%20cup%20water,%20brought%20it%20to%20a%20boil,%20added%20the%20noodles%20and,%20one%20minute%20later,%20the%20shrimp.%20Ramen%20noodles%20take%203%20minutes%20and%20the%20end%20of%20which%20you%20add%20the%20flavoring.%20I%20used%20only%20half.%20That's%20all%20there%20was%20to%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAll%20right,%20I'm%20going%20on%20a%20bit%20about%20this.%20Today's%20soup%20is%20something%20I%20dreamed%20up%20in%20a%20matter%20minutes%20early%20today.%20Everything%20that%20went%20into%20this%20was%20stuff%20that%20was%20on%20hand.%20If%20you%20have%20a%20trip%20planned%20to%20the%20store%20you%20can,%20or%20course,%20pick%20up%20whatever%20you%20might%20want%20to%20add%20to%20the%20soup.%20But%20I%20hate%20to%20go%20to%20the%20store%20for%20just%20one%20or%20two%20items.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnyhoo,%20kohlrabi%20is%20unusal.%20But%20we%20had%203%20%22heads%22%20of%20it.%20Also%20had%20leftover%20the%20jalapeno%20from%20a%20few%20days%20ago.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI'd%20love%20to%20take%20on%20the%20challenge%20of%20making%20a%20soup,%20Iron%20Chef%20style,%20from%20a%20list%20of%20ingredients%20provided%20by%20you%20the%20readers.%20(What%20readers?%20Nobody%20comes%20here.)%20Bring%20it%20on.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHam%20and%20bean%20soup%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20large%20pot%20heat%20the%20olive%20oil%20over%20medium-high%20heat.%20Add%20onion,%20celery,%20kohlrabi,%20jalapeno%20and%20garlic.%20Saute,%20stirring%20occasionally%20for%205%20minutes.%20Don't%20allow%20the%20vegetation%20to%20take%20on%20color.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20your%20pork%20chops%20have%20bones,%20remove%20them%20and%20add%20them%20to%20the%20pot%20for%20flavor.%20Cut%20the%20pork%20up%20into%201/2%22%20cubes.%20Add%20the%20pork%20and%20the%20beans%20to%20the%20pot.%20Stir%20and%20then%20add%20broth.%20Bring%20to%20a%20simmer%20and%20then%20season%20with%20salt%20and%20pepper%20and%20chili%20powder%20to%20taste.%20Let%20the%20soup%20simmer%20very%20slowly%20for%20maybe%2010%20minutes.%20That's%20all%20there%20is%20to%20it.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
