%20woke%20up%20under%20the%20weather%20on%20Saturday.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20spite%20of%20the%20change,%20Ty%20and%20I%20had%20ourselves%20a%20sweet%20night%20out,%20starting%20with%20a%20matinee%20of%20Gnomeo%20and%20Juliet,%20and%20ending%20with%20a%20quiet%20supper%20at%20home,%20made%20up%20mostly%20of%20chocolate.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20it%20was%20a%20lovely%20evening,%20we%20did%20miss%20out%20on%20the%20%E2%80%9Clittle%20boy%E2%80%9D%20time%20we%E2%80%99d%20been%20looking%20forward%20to.%20See,%20Ty%E2%80%99s%20conniving%20momma%20(yep,%20that%E2%80%99d%20be%20me)%20had%20a%20sweet%20little%20Valentine%E2%80%99s%20projects%20all%20lined%20up%20and%20ready%20to%20go%20for%20the%20boys%20to%20do%20together%20on%20Sunday%20morning.%20Instead,%20Ty%20and%20I%20rolled%20up%20our%20sleeves%20and%20got%20chatty.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYep,%20I%20said%20chatty.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20made%20conversation%20hearts.%20This%20is%20an%20idea%20that%20my%20sister%20gave%20me%20last%20year,%20but%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20get%20the%20supplies%20ready%20to%20make%20them%20in%20time%20for%20Valentine%E2%80%99s%20Day%20then,%20so%20I%20set%20my%20mind%20on%202011!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThese%20little%20treats%20are%20so%20easy%20to%20make%20at%20home.%20The%20one%20thing%20to%20remember%20if%20you%20want%20to%20make%20these%20is%20that%20they%20require%20an%20extensive%20drying%20time%20of%20about%2024%20hours%20before%20you%20can%20write%20on%20them.%20I%20bought%20a%20package%20of%20food%20markers%20and%20we%20were%20ready%20to%20go!%20Don%E2%80%99t%20be%20intimidated%20by%20the%20long%20instructions,%20these%20are%20really%20as%20basic%20as%20making%20up%20a%20simple%20dough,%20coloring%20it,%20rolling%20it%20out%20and%20cutting%20it%20like%20sugar%20cookies.%20Try%20and%20find%20a%20heart%20shaped%20cookie%20cutter%20that%20is%20no%20bigger%20than%20an%20inch%20in%20diameter.%20I%20got%20mine%20at%20Hobby%20Lobby%20for%20about%2030%20cents,%20and%20the%20Gourmet%20Writer%20food%20markers%20by%20Americolor%20for%20about%20$8.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreparation:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20Place%20the%20corn%20syrup,%20gelatin,%20and%20water%20in%20a%20small%20microwave-safe%20bowl.%20Stir%20until%20the%20gelatin%20is%20well-distributed.%20Microwave%20the%20mixture%20for%2030%20seconds,%20so%20the%20gelatin%20dissolves,%20and%20stir%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20Pour%20the%20gelatin%20mixture%20into%20the%20bowl%20of%20a%20large%20stand%20mixer%20fitted%20with%20a%20paddle%20attachment.%20Alternately,%20if%20you%20are%20using%20a%20hand%20mixer,%20pour%20the%20gelatin%20mixture%20into%20a%20large%20bowl.%20Add%201%20cup%20of%20powdered%20sugar%20and%20turn%20the%20mixer%20to%20low,%20mixing%20until%20the%20sugar%20is%20incorporated.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.%20Once%20the%20sugar%20is%20mixed%20in,%20add%20another%20cup%20of%20sugar,%20again%20mixing%20on%20low%20until%20it%20liquefies.%20Continue%20to%20add%20the%20remaining%20powdered%20sugar,%20one%20cup%20at%20a%20time,%20pausing%20in%20between%20additions%20to%20allow%20the%20sugar%20to%20mix%20in,%20until%20the%20full%20two%20pounds%20of%20powdered%20sugar%20is%20added.%20Periodically,%20stop%20the%20mixer%20and%20scrape%20down%20the%20bottom%20and%20sides%20of%20the%20bowl.%20The%20candy%20will%20progress%20from%20a%20thin,%20watery%20liquid%20to%20a%20very%20stiff%20dough.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.%20Once%20all%20of%20the%20sugar%20is%20incorporated,%20dust%20a%20work%20surface%20(counter%20or%20large%20cutting%20board)%20with%20powdered%20sugar%20and%20scrape%20the%20candy%20out%20onto%20the%20work%20surface.%20The%20candy%20will%20be%20very%20sticky%20and%20stiff.%20Generously%20dust%20the%20top%20of%20the%20ball%20of%20candy%20with%20powdered%20sugar,%20and%20begin%20to%20knead%20the%20candy%20like%20bread%20dough:%20fold%20the%20ball%20of%20dough%20over%20onto%20itself,%20then%20use%20the%20heel%20of%20your%20hand%20to%20push%20it%20down.%20Give%20the%20candy%20a%20quarter-turn,%20and%20repeat%20the%20process,%20dusting%20it%20with%20more%20powdered%20sugar%20as%20often%20as%20necessary%20to%20prevent%20it%20from%20sticking%20to%20the%20board%20or%20your%20hands.%20Knead%20until%20the%20candy%20is%20satiny%20and%20not%20sticky.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E5.Decide%20how%20many%20colors/flavors%20of%20conversation%20hearts%20you%20want%20to%20make,%20and%20divide%20the%20candy%20dough%20into%20that%20many%20portions.%20To%20flavor%20and%20color%20the%20candy,%20take%20one%20of%20the%20balls%20and%20flatten%20it%20into%20a%20palm-sized%20disc.%20Add%20a%20few%20drops%20of%20food%20coloring%20and%20flavoring%20extract%20to%20the%20center%20of%20the%20disc,%20and%20fold%20it%20over%20on%20itself.%20(It%20is%20a%20good%20idea%20to%20wear%20disposable%20plastic%20gloves%20during%20this%20step%20to%20keep%20your%20hands%20free%20of%20colors%20and%20odors.)%20Knead%20the%20dough%20ball,%20just%20as%20you%20did%20before,%20until%20the%20color%20is%20evenly%20dispersed%20throughout%20the%20candy,%20and%20all%20streaks%20have%20disappeared.%20Repeat%20this%20process%20with%20remaining%20candy%20balls%20and%20colors/flavors,%20until%20all%20of%20your%20candy%20is%20colored%20and%20flavored.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E6.%20Dust%20your%20work%20surface%20and%20a%20rolling%20pin%20with%20powdered%20sugar,%20and%20roll%20out%20one%20of%20the%20candy%20balls%20to%20your%20desired%20thickness.%20Small%20store-bought%20conversation%20hearts%20tend%20to%20be%20fairly%20thick,%20generally%20over%201/4%E2%80%9D%20thick.%20I%20find%20that%20this%20thickness%20works%20well%20for%20small%20hearts%20(under%201%E2%80%9D),%20but%20it%20makes%20larger%20heart%20sizes%20very%20substantial%20and%20a%20little%20overwhelming.%20However,%20the%20thickness%20is%20entirely%20a%20matter%20of%20personal%20preference%20and%20does%20not%20affect%20the%20taste%20of%20the%20final%20candy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E7.%20Use%20heart-shaped%20cutters%20to%20cut%20hearts%20out%20of%20the%20rolled%20candy,%20and%20transfer%20the%20hearts%20to%20a%20baking%20sheet%20lined%20with%20parchment%20paper.%20Smaller%20hearts%20are%20more%20realistic,%20but%20larger%20hearts%20are%20easier%20to%20write%20messages%20on.%20Once%20you%20have%20cut%20out%20your%20hearts,%20you%20can%20re-roll%20the%20scraps%20to%20get%20more%20shapes%20out%20of%20the%20candy.%20Repeat%20with%20remaining%20candy%20balls.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E8.%20Allow%20your%20hearts%20to%20air-dry%20for%20at%20least%2024%20hours%20before%20you%20write%20on%20them.%20This%20step%20is%20VERY%20important,%20because%20the%20extra%20moisture%20in%20the%20hearts%20will%20cause%20the%20ink%20to%20run%20if%20you%20do%20not%20let%20them%20dry%20properly.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20I%20was%20done%20cutting%20out%20the%20hearts,%20I%20rolled%20all%20my%20scrap%20dough%20together%20and%20made%20swirly%20hearts!9.%20After%20the%20hearts%20have%20dried%20for%20a%20day,%20use%20the%20food%20writing%20markers%20to%20write%20messages%20or%20draw%20designs%20on%20the%20hearts.%20Store%20your%20conversation%20hearts%20in%20an%20airtight%20container%20at%20room%20temperature.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETy%20and%20I%20had%20fun%20writing%20messages%20to%20his%20favorite%20loves!These%20were%20super%20easy%20to%20put%20together.%20I%20did%20all%20the%20prep%20work%20and%20had%20them%20ready%20to%20decorate%20the%20next%20day.%20It%20was%20tons%20of%20fun%20and%20made%20sweet%20little%20Valentines%20treats%20for%20Ty's%20favorite%20people.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
