,%20now%20is%20the%20time%20to%20get%20your%20hands%20on%20some.%20Otherwise,%20buying%20the%20pre-picked%20lump%20crab%20meat%20is%20the%20next%20best%20thing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20for%20me,%20having%20a%20%E2%80%9Ccrab%20season%E2%80%9D%20is%20something%20of%20an%20oddity.%20In%20North%20Carolina,%20it%20was%20always%20crab%20season.%20Blue%20crabs.%20If%20you%E2%80%99ve%20read%20along%20from%20the%20very%20beginning,%20you%20might%20remember%20me%20talking%20about%20our%20place%20at%20the%20beach.%20My%20pops%20had%203%20or%204%20crab%20pots,%20and%20every%20weekend%20we%20went%20to%20the%20beach%20he%E2%80%99d%20take%20the%20crab%20pots%20out%20and%20let%20them%20hang%20out%20in%20the%20sound%20for%20a%20few%20days.%20The%20next%20weekend%20we%E2%80%99d%20check%20them,%20and%20if%20we%20were%20lucky,%20they%E2%80%99d%20be%20FULL%20of%20crabs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20never%20appreciated%20the%20crabbing%20and%20fishing%20like%20I%20do%20now.%20What%20I%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20give%20for%20another%20weekend%20like%20those%20weekends%20we%20spent%20down%20there%20%E2%80%93%20taking%20out%20our%20own%20pots%20(or%20at%20least,%20watching%20pops%20do%20it),%20dragging%20the%20shrimp%20nets%20through%20the%20mud,%20digging%20for%20clams%20(the%20term%20%E2%80%9Cclam%20diggers%E2%80%9D%20took%20on%20a%20whole%20new%20meaning,%20a%20legit%20meaning,%20then),%20peeling%20shrimp%20and%20watching%20a%20fat%20ol%E2%80%99%20flounder%20fry%20up.%20Our%20little%20vacation%20trailer%20smelled%20like%20a%20shrimp%20shack%20almost%20nightly,%20and%20the%20steam%20fogged%20up%20the%20windows%20in%20a%20flash.%20We%20went%20through%20jars%20of%20cocktail%20and%20tartar%20sauce,%20and%20man,%20I%20totally%20took%20the%20hushpuppies%20for%20granted.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20don%E2%80%99t%20even%20think%20I%20cared%20much%20for%20seafood%20back%20then%20%E2%80%93%20unless,%20of%20course,%20the%20shrimp%20were%20fried%20up%20nice%20and%20crunchy.%20Nowadays,%20a%20nice%20piece%20of%20fish,%20or%20a%20handful%20of%20shrimp,%20and%20this%20time,%20a%20ginormous%20container%20of%20extra-fresh%20West%20Coast%20Dungeness%20crab,%20is%20a%20highlight%20of%20the%20day.%20My%20friend,%20Judy,%20told%20me%20their%20company%20had%20gotten%20a%20great%20deal%20on%20live%20or%20picked%20crab%20and%20if%20I%20wanted%20any,%20all%20I%20had%20to%20do%20was%20tell%20her%20how%20much%20and%20I%20could%20pick%20it%20up%20later%20that%20day.%20As%20much%20as%20I%20wanted%20to%20buy%20a%20few%20live%20crabs%20for%20dinner%20that%20Friday,%20I%20knew%20my%20lil%E2%80%99%20pot%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20handle%20them%20in%20their%20full-on%20shell-on%20form.%20(And%20to%20be%20honest,%20I%20haven%E2%80%99t%20tossed%20a%20live%20crab%20in%20a%20pot%20of%20boiling%20water%20in%20a%20looooong%20time,%20so%20that%20was%20another%20issue%20that%20quickly%20became%20a%20non-issue.)%20So%20instead,%20I%20opted%20for%20pre-picked%20and%20with%20that,%20I%20knew%20it%20was%20crab-cake%20time.%20But%20not%20the%20crab%20cakes%20you%20get%20at%20the%20restaurant%20that%20are%20loaded%20with%20bread%20crumbs%20%E2%80%93%20real,%20meat-filled%20crab%20cakes%20was%20what%20I%20had%20in%20mind.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20so%20I%20went%20full%20California%20style%20and%20figured%20a%20recipe%20with%20avocado%20sauce%20was%20entirely%20appropriate.%20Sure,%20my%20cakes%20were%20so%20much%20more%20crab%20and%20so%20much%20less%20%E2%80%98glue%E2%80%99%20that%20they%20didn%E2%80%99t%20quite%20stay%20together%20in%20cake%20form,%20so%20to%20speak,%20but%20I%20was%20generally%20ok%20with%20that%20%E2%80%93%20what%20was%20lacking%20in%20presentation%20was%20entirely%20overshadowed%20by%20taste%20this%20time%20around.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEven%20though%20I%20never%20ate%20crab%20cakes%20with%20avocado%20sauce%20back%20home,%20I%20still%20felt%20a%20twinge%20of%20nostalgia%20for%20all%20those%20weekends%20back%20East.%20It%20was%20a%20good%20feeling,%20and%20for%20a%20few%20moments%20I%20felt%20like%20I%20could%20have%20easily%20been%20sitting%20back%20there,%20shoving%20fried%20shrimp%20and%20a%20few%20bites%20of%20flounder%20and%20stuffed%20crab%20into%20my%20face.%20I%20closed%20my%20eyes,%20took%20a%20deep%20breath,%20and%20I%20was%20transported%203,000%20miles%20away.%20%E2%80%98Twas%20a%20good%20night,%20a%20good%20night%20indeed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECrab%20Cakes%20with%20Spicy%20Avocado%20Sauce%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdapted%20from%20Gourmet,%202004%20via%20Epicurious.com;%20serves%204%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Etime%20commitment:%2045%20minutes%20(30%20minutes%20active)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eingredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Esauce%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Einstructions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPut%20oven%20rack%20in%20middle%20position%20and%20preheat%20oven%20to%20400%20F.%20Line%20with%20parchment%20paper.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eprepare%20sauce%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPulse%20avocado%20with%20mayonnaise,%20lime%20juice,%20salt,%20sugar,%20and%20jalape%C3%B1o%20in%20a%20food%20processor%20until%20chile%20is%20finely%20chopped.%20Add%20milk%20and%20pur%C3%A9e%20until%20smooth.%20Trans
