%20about%20Jamie%20Oliver,%20I%20was%20hesitant%20when%20I%20found%20out%20he%20had%20been%20chosen.%20%20I'll%20save%20you%20from%20my%20reminiscing%20(until%20the%20end%20of%20September).%20%20I'll%20simply%20say%20that%20there%20have%20been%20some%20big%20winners%20and%20some%20bumps%20along%20the%20way.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20like%20bad%20news%20first...to%20end%20on%20something%20good.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJamie%20Oliver's%20Sweet%20Potato%20Soup%20w/%20Chorizo%20sounded%20like%20a%20good%20idea.%20%20An%20excellent%20idea.%20%20I%20live%20near%20sweet%20potato%20country%20and%20we're%20always%20looking%20for%20more%20ways%20to%20cook%20them.%20%20And%20chorizo%20is%20no%20stranger%20in%20my%20house,%20normally%20making%20an%20appearance%20in%20breakfast%20burritos.%20%20Which%20we%20eat%20for%20lunch.%20%20That's%20just%20the%20kind%20of%20topsy%20turvy%20house%20I%20live%20in.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20soup%20has%20gotten%20rave%20reviews%20across%20the%20blogosphere,%20so%20don't%20pay%20any%20attention%20to%20little%20old%20me.%20%20Until%20I%20get%20to%20the%20salad.%20%20Then%20sit%20up%20straight.%20%20And%20take%20notes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESweet%20Potato%20&%20Chorizo%20Soup,%20served%20with%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGrilled%20Corn%20Cakes%20(Food%20&%20Wine%20Magazine)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20be%20fair,%20I%20made%20changes%20(yeah,%20what's%20new?).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E~We%20discovered%20we're%20not%20fans%20of%20curry--more%20on%20that%20next%20week.%20%20I%20decided%20to%20skip%20the%20curry%20powder%20and%20flavor%20the%20soup%20with%20cumin%20and%20smoked%20paprika.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E~It%20seemed%20a%20sin%20to%20puree%20perfectly%20good%20chunks%20of%20chorizo%20sausage%20(and%20kinda%20gross%20too,%20IMO),%20so%20I%20compromised%20and%20pureed%20only%20half%20of%20the%20soup%20in%20a%20blender.%20%20Avoiding%20the%20chorizo%20as%20much%20as%20I%20could.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20was%20so-so.%20%20Edible.%20%20Not%20memorable.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20soup%20recipe%20can%20be%20found%20@%20Kitchen%20Adventures%EF%BB%BF%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhat%20was%20memorable%20was%20the%20Roasted%20Carrot%20&%20Avocado%20Salad%20w/%20Orange%20&%20Lemon%20Dressing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoasted%20Carrot%20&%20Avocado%20Salad%20w/%20Orange%20&%20Lemon%20Dressing%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20the%20oven%20to%20350%C2%B0F.%20Parboil%20your%20carrots%20in%20boiling,%20salted%20water%20for%2010%20minutes,%20until%20they%20are%20very%20nearly%20cooked,%20then%20drain%20and%20put%20them%20into%20a%20roasting%20pan.%20You%20should%20flavor%20them%20while%20they're%20steaming%20hot,%20so%20while%20the%20carrots%20are%20cooking%20get%20a%20pestle%20and%20mortar%20and%20smash%20up%20the%20cumin%20seeds,%20chillies,%20salt%20and%20pepper.%20Add%20the%20garlic%20and%20thyme%20leaves%20and%20smash%20up%20again%20until%20you%20have%20a%20kind%20of%20paste.%20The%20idea%20here%20is%20to%20build%20up%20the%20flavors.%20Add%20enough%20extra%20virgin%20olive%20oil%20to%20generously%20cover%20the%20paste,%20and%20a%20good%20swig%20of%20vinegar.%20This%20will%20be%20like%20a%20marinade,%20a%20rub%20and%20a%20dressing%20all%20in%20one!%20Stir%20together,%20then%20pour%20over%20the%20carrots%20in%20the%20pan,%20coating%20them%20well.%20Add%20the%20orange%20and%20lemon%20halves,%20cut-side%20down.%20These%20will%20roast%20along%20with%20the%20carrots,%20and%20their%20juice%20can%20be%20used%20as%20the%20basis%20of%20the%20dressing.%20Place%20in%20the%20preheated%20oven%20for%2025%20to%2030%20minutes,%20or%20until%20golden.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20the%20carrots%20are%20roasting,%20halve%20and%20peel%20your%20avocados,%20discarding%20the%20pits,%20then%20cut%20them%20into%20wedges%20lengthwise%20and%20place%20in%20a%20big%20bowl.%20Remove%20the%20carrots%20from%20the%20oven%20and%20add%20them%20to%20the%20avocados.%20Carefully,%20using%20some%20tongs,%20squeeze%20the%20roasted%20orange%20and%20lemon%20juice%20into%20a%20bowl%20and%20add%20the%20same%20amount%20of%20extra%20virgin%20olive%20oil%20and%20a%20little%20swig%20of%20red%20wine%20vinegar.%20Season,%20and%20pour%20this%20dressing%20over%20the%20carrots%20and%20avocados.%20Mix%20together,%20have%20a%20taste%20and%20correct%20the%20seasoning.%20Call%20your%20gang%20round%20the%20table%20while%20you%20toast%20or%20broil%20your%20ciabatta%20slices.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETear%20the%20toasted%20bread%20into%20little%20pieces%20and%20add%20to%20the%20dressed%20carrot%20and%20avocado.%20Mix%20together,%20toss%20in%20the%20salad%20leaves%20and%20cress%20and%20transfer%20to%20a%20big%20platter%20or%20divide%20between%20individual%20plates.%20Spoon%20over%20a%20nice%20dollop%20of%20sour%20cream,%20sprinkle%20over%20your%20toasted%20seeds%20and%20drizzle%20over%20some%20extra%20virgin%20olive%20oil.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI've%20never%20had%20roasted%20carrots%20in%20a%20salad%20before,%20but%20now%20I%20want%20them%20all%20the%20time.%20%20In%20every%20salad%20I%20eat.%20%20The%20combination%20and%20textures%20of%20the%20avocado%20and%20roasted%20carrots%20was%20rich%20and%20very%20filling.%20%20We%20could%20have%20eaten%20this%20as%20a%20meal.%20%20In%20fact,%20next%20time%20I%20make%20this,%20I'll%20use%20it%20as%20the%20main%20dish...it%20is%20more%20work%20than%20I'd%20normally%20put%20into%20a%20salad.%20%20But%20the%20cumin,%20chile,%20orange,%20and%20lemon%20in%20the%20dressing%20made%20all%20of%20us%20say,%20%22wow.%22%20%20The%20extra%20work%20was%20worth%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20true%20me%20form,%20I%20didn't%20follow%20the%20recipe.%20%20Fancy%20carrots%20and%20lettuce%20aren't%20easy%20to%20come%20by%20this%20time%20of%20year.%20%20My%20sunflower%20kernels%20ended%20up%20being%20rancid.%20%20And%20I%20skipped%20the%20broiled%20bread%20since%20we%20were%20also%20eating%20bready%20pizza%20puffs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo...50-50%20this%20week,%20but%20I%20came%20away%20with%20a%20great%20salad%20I%20know%20I'll%20make%20again.%20%20(Overall%20the%20Jamie%20Oliver%20count%20is%20higher%20on%20the%20like/make%20again%20side.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EVisit%20IHCC%20to%20see%20what%20other%20soups,%20salads,%20&%20sandwiches%20are%20being%20made%20this%20week.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlso%20visit%20Deb%20@%20Kahakai%20Kitchen.%20%20She%20has%20a%20weekly%20round-up%20of%20all%20things%20soup,%20salad,%20and%20sandwich:%20Souper%20(Soup,%20Salad%20&%20Sammies)%20Sundays.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
