%20Bakewell%20Tart...%20er...%20pudding%20that%20was%20inspired%20by%20a%20rich%20baking%20history%20dating%20back%20to%20the%201800's%20in%20England.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBakewell%20Tart%20...%20er%20pudding%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMakes%20one%2023cm%20(9%E2%80%9D%20tart)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPrep%20time:%20less%20than%2010%20minutes%20(plus%20time%20for%20the%20individual%20elements)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EResting%20time:%2015%20minutes%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBaking%20time:%2030%20minutes%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEquipment%20needed:%2023cm%20(9%E2%80%9D)%20tart%20pan%20or%20pie%20tin%20(preferably%20with%20ridged%20edges),%20rolling%20pin%20One%20quantity%20sweet%20shortcrust%20pastry%20(recipe%20follows)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBench%20flour%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E250ml%20(1cup%20(8%20US%20fl.%20oz))%20jam%20or%20curd,%20warmed%20for%20spreadability%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20quantity%20frangipane%20(recipe%20follows)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20handful%20blanched,%20flaked%20almonds%20%20Assembling%20the%20tart%20Place%20the%20chilled%20dough%20disc%20on%20a%20lightly%20floured%20surface.%20If%20it's%20overly%20cold,%20you%20will%20need%20to%20let%20it%20become%20acclimatised%20for%20about%2015%20minutes%20before%20you%20roll%20it%20out.%20Flour%20the%20rolling%20pin%20and%20roll%20the%20pastry%20to%205mm%20(1/4%E2%80%9D)%20thickness,%20by%20rolling%20in%20one%20direction%20only%20(start%20from%20the%20centre%20and%20roll%20away%20from%20you),%20and%20turning%20the%20disc%20a%20quarter%20turn%20after%20each%20roll.%20When%20the%20pastry%20is%20to%20the%20desired%20size%20and%20thickness,%20transfer%20it%20to%20the%20tart%20pan,%20press%20in%20and%20trim%20the%20excess%20dough.%20Patch%20any%20holes,%20fissures%20or%20tears%20with%20trimmed%20bits.%20Chill%20in%20the%20freezer%20for%2015%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20oven%20to%20200C/400F.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemove%20shell%20from%20freezer,%20spread%20as%20even%20a%20layer%20as%20you%20can%20of%20jam%20onto%20the%20pastry%20base.%20Top%20with%20frangipane,%20spreading%20to%20cover%20the%20entire%20surface%20of%20the%20tart.%20Smooth%20the%20top%20and%20pop%20into%20the%20oven%20for%2030%20minutes.%20Five%20minutes%20before%20the%20tart%20is%20done,%20the%20top%20will%20be%20poofy%20and%20brownish.%20Remove%20from%20oven%20and%20strew%20flaked%20almonds%20on%20top%20and%20return%20to%20the%20heat%20for%20the%20last%20five%20minutes%20of%20baking.%20The%20finished%20tart%20will%20have%20a%20golden%20crust%20and%20the%20frangipane%20will%20be%20tanned,%20poofy%20and%20a%20bit%20spongy-looking.%20Remove%20from%20the%20oven%20and%20cool%20on%20the%20counter.%20Serve%20warm,%20with%20cr%C3%A8me%20fra%C3%AEche,%20whipped%20cream%20or%20custard%20sauce%20if%20you%20wish.%20When%20you%20slice%20into%20the%20tart,%20the%20almond%20paste%20will%20be%20firm,%20but%20slightly%20squidgy%20and%20the%20crust%20should%20be%20crisp%20but%20not%20tough.%20Sweet%20Shortcrust%20Pastry%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPrep%20time:%2015-20%20minutes%20Resting%20time:%2030%20minutes%20(minimum)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E30g%20(1oz)%20all%20purpose%20flour%20%20Cream%20butter%20and%20sugar%20together%20for%20about%20a%20minute%20or%20until%20the%20mixture%20is%20primrose%20in%20color%20and%20very%20fluffy.%20Scrape%20down%20the%20side%20of%20the%20bowl%20and%20add%20the%20eggs,%20one%20at%20a%20time,%20beating%20well%20after%20each%20addition.%20The%20batter%20may%20appear%20to%20curdle.%20In%20the%20words%20of%20Douglas%20Adams:%20Don%E2%80%99t%20panic.%20Really.%20It%E2%80%99ll%20be%20fine.%20After%20all%20three%20are%20in,%20pour%20in%20the%20almond%20extract%20and%20mix%20for%20about%20another%2030%20seconds%20and%20scrape%20down%20the%20sides%20again.%20With%20the%20beaters%20on,%20spoon%20in%20the%20ground%20nuts%20and%20the%20flour.%20Mix%20well.%20The%20mixture%20will%20be%20soft,%20keep%20its%20slightly%20curdled%20look%20(mostly%20from%20the%20almonds)%20and%20retain%20its%20pallid%20yellow%20color.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThese%20tarts/pudding%20pies%20were%20absolutely%20fantastic!%20I%20loved%20the%20almond%20flavor%20and%20texture%20imparted%20upon%20the%20filling,%20and%20it%20was%20paired%20so%20well%20with%20the%20mixed%20berry%20jam.%20Since%20my%20younger%20sister%20is%20allergic%20to%20ground-nuts%20and%20tree-nuts%20I%20used%20my%20ever-favorite%20substitute%20for%20a%20half%20of%20the%20batter...%20ground%20up%20pine%20nuts!%20She%20enjoyed%20the%20dessert%20as%20much%20as%20the%20rest%20of%20my%20family%20and%20even%20had%20seconds%20:P%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWell,%20it's%20time%20to%20organize%20and%20de-clutter%20more%20of%20my%20belongings%20in%20order%20to%20bring%20them%20over%20to%20the%20condo!!%20AAHHH,%20I%20never%20knew%20that%20I%20was%20such%20a%20pack-rat...%20it's%20kind%20of%20crazy!%20Oh,%20and%20FYI%20all%20of%20my%20baking%20utensils%20are%20definitely%20coming%20with%20me%20to%20the%20new%20place%20:)%20...%20can't%20live%20without%20baking!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
