.%20%20It%20was%20a%20glorious%20vacation%20full%20of%20snorkeling,%20paddle%20surfing,%20good%20friends,%20lots%20of%20sun,%20even%20more%20laughs%20and%20delicious%20fresh%20food.%20%20I%20will%20spare%20you%20all%20of%20the%20typical%20vacation%20stories,%20except%20for%20the%20one%20that%20involves%20me%20attempting%20to%20ride%20down%20the%20side%20of%20a%20volcano%20in%20Maui.%20%20As%20we%E2%80%99ve%20discussed%20before,%20I%20am%20not%20an%20adventurous%20person%20by%20any%20stretch%20of%20the%20imagination.%20%20Most%20of%20my%20beach%20vacations%20have%20involved%20a%20lounge%20chair,%20magazines,%20naps%20and%20sidling%20up%20to%20the%20bar%20the%20minute%20it%20opens.%20%20This%20time%20around,%20I%20travelled%20with%20people%20who%20like%20to%20do%20things%20on%20vacation,%20which%20is%20a%20completely%20novel%20and%20foreign%20concept%20to%20me.%20%20I%20gamely%20went%20along%20with%20all%20of%20their%20plans,%20mainly%20because%20I%E2%80%99m%20a%20people%20pleaser,%20but%20there%20was%20a%20part%20of%20me%20that%20thought%20it%20all%20sounded%20like%20fun.%20%20And!%20I%20like%20to%20believe%20that%20I%E2%80%99m%20one%20of%20those%20people%20who%20will%20try%20anything%20[within%20reason]%20once.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20should%20note%20those%20brackets%20in%20the%20sentence%20above,%20because%20in%20no%20world%20is%20riding%20a%20bike%20down%20the%20side%20of%20a%20volcano%20within%20reason.%20It%E2%80%99s%20crazy,%20stupid%20and%20mind-numbingly%20frightening.%20%20In%20theory%20it%20sounded%20like%20fun%20and%20a%20story%20that%20I%20could%20tell%20well%20into%20my%20golden%20years,%20but%20in%20practice%20it%20was%20terrifying.%20%20It%20started%20with%20a%201:30%20AM%20wake%20up%20call%20so%20we%20could%20drive%20to%20the%20van%20that%20would%20take%20us%20to%20the%20top%20of%20the%20volcano%20to%20watch%20the%20sunrise%20(which%20was%20great,%20except%20it%20was%20about%2030%20degrees%20outside.%20%20I%20will%20say%20feeling%20as%20though%20I%20could%20touch%20the%20Big%20Dipper%20was%20worth%20having%20to%20put%20on%20a%20fleece%20and%20jeans%20in%20Hawai%E2%80%99i).%20%20After%20the%20sunrise,%20we%20were%20taken%20by%20van%20down%20to%20a%20%E2%80%9Creasonable%E2%80%9D%20spot%20on%20the%20volcano%20where%20the%20bike%20ride%20would%20start.%20%20They%20lined%20us%20up%20shortest%20to%20tallest,%20which%20meant%20I%20was%20third%20in%20line.%20%20Then%20they%20handed%20us%20motorcycle%20helmets.%20%20It%E2%80%99s%20at%20this%20point%20that%20I%20should%20have%20thought,%20%E2%80%9CHeather,%20what%20the%20$%23(%5E&$*%20are%20you%20doing?%E2%80%9D%20Instead,%20I%20thought%20that%20my%20helmet%20matched%20my%20nail%20polish%20nicely.%20%20I%20only%20started%20to%20get%20nervous%20when%20they%20pulled%20the%20bikes%20out%20of%20the%20trailer.%20%20They%20looked%20like%20fold%20up%20bikes,%20the%20chains%20were%20rusted%20and%20the%20seats%20were%20a%20little%20loose.%20%20My%20hands%20started%20to%20shake%20when%20the%20guide%20told%20us%20to%20just%20ride%20the%20brakes%20down%20the%20winding,%20twisting%20curves%20of%20the%20volcano.%20%20I%E2%80%99m%20sorry,%20what%20now?%20%20But,%20because%20I%20am%20generally%20a%20follower,%20I%20got%20on%20the%20bike%20and%20started%20pedaling%20(or%20really,%20just%20keeping%20my%20feet%20on%20the%20pedals%20and%20hanging%20on%20for%20dear%20life).%20%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20think%20I%20had%20gone%2050%20yards%20before%20I%20started%20screaming%20in%20my%20head.%20%20Another%20100%20yards%20and%20I%20was%20screaming%20out%20loud.%20%20On%20my%20right%20was%20a%20sheer%20drop%20off.%20%20On%20my%20left%20was%20traffic.%20%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20look%20behind%20me%20and%20I%20was%20riding%20the%20brakes%20so%20hard%20that%20the%20people%20in%20front%20of%20me%20were%202%20curves%20ahead,%20so%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20see%20them.%20%20Finally,%20we%20pulled%20over%20and%20I%20jumped%20off%20the%20bike,%20handed%20my%20helmet%20to%20the%20guide%20and%20went%20to%20the%20van%20following%20us%20where%20it%20took%20me%20a%20good%2010%20minutes%20to%20start%20breathing%20normally.%20%20I%E2%80%99d%20like%20to%20tell%20you%20that%20I%20wish%20I%E2%80%99d%20finished%20the%20bike%20ride,%20but%20there%E2%80%99s%20no%20part%20of%20me%20that%20feels%20that%20way.%20NONE.%20%20Good%20on%20the%20people%20who%20did%20(including%20my%20friends)%E2%80%93you%E2%80%99ll%20have%20much%20more%20interesting%20stories%20at%20the%20nursing%20home.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20the%20ride%20[in%20the%20van],%20we%20stopped%20in%20the%20lovely%20Oceanside%20town%20of%20Pai%E2%80%99a%20where%20we%20were%20able%20to%20relax%20on%20the%20beach%20and%20thank%20the%20powers%20that%20be%20that%20we%20were%20still%20alive.%20%20We%20found%20a%20cute%20storefront%20restaurant%20that%20served%20homemade%20kalua%20pork%20(so%20homemade%20that%20the%20woman%20behind%20the%20counter%20pulled%20a%20tupperware%20container%20of%20pork%20out%20of%20the%20refrigerator%20and%20mentioned%20that%20it%20had%20come%20out%20of%20her%20oven%20that%20morning).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOver%20the%20course%20of%20the%20week,%20kalua%20pork%20had%20become%20a%20fave%20of%20mine%20(along%20with%20spam%20musubi%E2%80%93next%20recipe!).%20%20Kalua%20means%20to%20cook%20in%20an%20underground%20oven,%20but%20lucky%20for%20those%20of%20us%20who%20live%20in%20highrises,%20you%20can%20do%20it%20in%20a%20crockpot.%20%20It%E2%80%99s%20basically%20a%20slow%20roasted%20pork%20shoulder,%20which%20is%20then%20shredded%20and%20served%20over%20rice.%20%20I%E2%80%99m%20all%20for%20keeping%20the%20integrity%20of%20local%20dishes,%20but%20I%20see%20a%20lot%20of%20possibilities%20with%20this%20one%E2%80%93the%20addition%20of%20ginger,%20hot%20peppers,%20other%20vegetables%E2%80%A6%20It%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20be%20easier,%20especially%20with%20a%20crockpot,%20but%20can%20be%20done%20in%20the%20oven%20as%20well.%20The%20use%20of%20liquid%20smoke%E2%80%93a%20first%20for%20me%E2%80%93gives%20it%20the%20taste%20of%20an%20outdoor%20barbecue,%20which%20is%20great%20since%20it%E2%80%99ll%20be%20a%20long%20while%20before%20there%20are%20any%20outdoor%20activities%20in%20the%20Chi.%20%20Riding%20down%20a%20volcano%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20seem%20so%20bad%20if%20it%20gets%20me%20outside%E2%80%A6%20Right?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKalua%20Pork%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20oven%20to%20350-400%20degrees%20F.%20Pierce%20pork%20all%20over%20with%20carving%20fork%20or%20score%20with%20a%20knife.%20Rub%20salt%20and%20liquid%20smoke%20into%20meat.%20Place%20pork%20fat%20side%20up%20in%20a%20roasting%20pan%20or%20deep%20casserole%20dish.%20Cover%20and%20roast%20in%20oven%20for%202%201/2-3%20hours.%20Remove%20the%20pork%20from%20pan%20and%20shred%20with%20two%20forks.%20Makes%20six%20servings.%20(I%20used%20my%20crockpot%20on%20low%20for%205%20hours.%20%20In%20the%20last%201/2%20hour,%20I%20added%20about%20a%20cup%20of%20shredded%20cabbage,%20which%20I%E2%80%99d%20had%20at%20one%20restaurant.%20%20Drain%20off%20excess%20liquid%20before%20serving%20over%20rice).%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
