%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThank%20you%20one%20and%20all%20,%20you%20keep%20me%20going%20%E2%99%A5%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eits%20time%20to%20come%20down%20to%20earth%20now%20and%20get%20back%20to%20reality...hehe!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20I%20am%20going%20to%20share%20a%20simple%20yet%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Escrumptious%20homely%20and%20typical%20Kerala%20meal.%20Kappa%20with%20chammanthi...mmmmm!%20For%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Emy%20non-keralite%20friends,%20that%20translates%20to%20Tapioca%20with%20coconut%20chutney.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKappa%20(also%20known%20as%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETapioca/cassava/Yuca%20root)%20is%20a%20staple%20item%20grown%20in%20mostly%20all%20Kerala%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ehouseholds.%20In%20my%20family%20every%20single%20home%20including%20ours%20has%20a%20small%20area%20of%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eground%20just%20meant%20for%20growing%20kappa%20and%20its%20very%20widely%20eaten%20all%20over%20the%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Esouth%20Indian%20state%20of%20Kerala.%20It%20is%20a%20tubular%20root%20with%20a%20thick%20brown%20skin%20and%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewhite%20flesh%20inside.%20It's%20cooked%20like%20pasta%20by%20cooking%20in%20salted%20boiling%20water%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eand%20the%20water%20is%20drained%20away.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUsually%20I%20prepare%20Chenda%20kappa%20at%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ehome,%20which%20is%20Manish%E2%80%99s%20favorite.%20Recently%20many%20of%20my%20fellow%20blogger%20friends%20%20did%20a%20virtual%20cookout%20together%20and%20made%20this%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Edish%20called%20Kappa%20Masala%20,%20adapted%20from%20Edible%20Garden%20and%20it%20looked%20really%20good,%20so%20I%20thought%20of%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Egiving%20it%20a%20try.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EManish%20wanted%20to%20call%20it%20Kappa%20Upma,%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewell%20I%20guess%20you%20could%20call%20it%20that,%20as%20long%20as%20you%20saut%C3%A9%20%20some%20onions%20and%20ginger%20as%20well.%20The%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Epreparation%20is%20simple%20and%20quick%20and%20it%20tasted%20really%20good.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlong%20with%20the%20Kappa%20Masala,%20%20I%20made%20some%20Malliela%20chammanthi%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(cilantro-coconut%20chutney)%20as%20a%20side%20dish.%20%20The%20cilantro%20adds%20a%20nice%20freshness%20when%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Epaired%20with%20the%20starchy%20tapioca.%20%20The%20chutney%20is%20very%20fresh%20tasting%20and%20needs%20no%20cooking.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20combo%20that%20we%20had%20was%20Kappa%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Emasala%20with%20malliela%20chammanthi%20and%20varutha%20kozhi%20(chicken%20fry)%20and%20a%20little%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eyogurt%20to%20cool%20down%20the%20spices%20(mainly%20for%20my%20lil%E2%80%99Appu)%20on%20a%20beautiful%20banana%20leaf%20...ain%E2%80%99t%20it%20colorful?%20:-)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20was%20finger%20licking%20good.%20The%20spicy%20chicken%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Efry%20recipe%20will%20be%20shared%20in%20my%20next%20post.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20usually%20never%20use%20coconut%20oil%20in%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Emy%20cooking%20,%20but%20for%20this%20meal%20I%20have%20used%20a%20scant%20amount%20just%20for%20the%20flavor%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eand%20it%20makes%20all%20the%20difference.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%E2%80%99ll%20need%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETapioca%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(cubed)%20%E2%80%93%20Two%20medium%20roots%20(about%203%20cups)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWater%20%E2%80%93%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eenough%20to%20boil%20the%20tapioca%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBlack%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMustard%20seeds%20%E2%80%93%20%C2%BD%20tsp%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECurry%20leaves%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%E2%80%93%201%20sprig%20(about%206-8%20leaves)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.Peel%20the%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ebrown%20skin%20of%20the%20tapioca%20and%20wash%20it%20thoroughly%20and%20chop%20it%20into%20small%20cubes%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ediscarding%20the%20central%20vein.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20Boil%20some%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewater,%20season%20with%20enough%20salt%20and%20cook%20the%20tapioca%20until%20cooked%20through%20and%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Esoft.%20Once%20cooked%20drain%20away%20the%20water.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.%20Crush%20the%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Egarlic%20and%20dry%20red%20chillies%20in%20a%20mortar-pestle%20or%20coarsely%20grind%20it%20in%20a%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Egrinder.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.%20Heat%20the%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ecoconut%20oil%20in%20a%20pan,%20crack%20mustard%20seeds%20and%20add%20the%20split%20urad%20dal,%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Egarlic-chilli%20paste%20and%20turmeric%20powder%20and%20saut%C3%A9%20for%202%20mins%20until%20the%20raw%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Esmell%20from%20the%20garlic%20disappears.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E5.%20Add%20the%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Etapioca/kappa%20along%20with%20curry%20leaves%20and%20mix%20well.%20Check%20for%20seasoning.%20Add%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Esalt%20if%20required.%20(Remember%20the%20tapioca%20was%20cooked%20in%20salted%20water)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMalliela%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChammanthi%20Recipe%20(Cilantro-Coconut%20chutney)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%E2%80%99ll%20need%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.Grind%20together%20all%20the%20ingredients.%20%20Add%20salt%20to%20taste%20and%20serve%20fresh.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(Adding%20Garlic%20is%20optional%20,%20it%20may%20leave%20a%20mild%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eraw%20taste%20as%20we%20are%20not%20cooking%20the%20chutney%20after%20grinding%20%E2%80%93%20we%20love%20that%20taste%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ethough)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20recent
