In%20my%20family,%20any%20occasion%20was%20reason%20for%20a%20celebration.%20And%20the%204th%20of%20July....America's%20Birthday%20was%20no%20exception.%20Much%20had%20to%20do%20with%20the%20gratefulness%20my%20grandparents%20felt%20for%20the%20opportunities%20America%20afforded%20them.%20They%20lived%20in%20the%20most%20prosperous%20nation%20in%20the%20world%20with%20God%20in%20our%20Pledge,%20National%20Anthem,%20founding%20documents%20and%20their%20home.%20Grandpa%20Frank%20was%20a%20proud%20husband,%20a%20proud%20father%20and%20grandfather%20and%20proud%20of%20the%20day%20he%20placed%20his%20hand%20over%20his%20heart%20and%20betrothed%20himself%20to%20Old%20Glory.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOn%20Independence%20Day,%20Roman%20candles%20brightened%20the%20evening%20sky%20as%20the%20children%20twirled%20sparklers%20on%20the%20sidewalks.%20Nonna%20and%20neighbors%20gathered%20on%20their%20front%20porches%20and%20waved%20small%20American%20flags%20reminders%20of%20the%20democracy,%20equality%20and%20freedom%20they%20cherished.%20Italy's%20flag%20was%20no%20where%20to%20be%20seen....only%20the%20Stars%20&%20Stripes.%20To%20fit%20in,%20my%20ancestors%20learned%20English%20as%20quickly%20as%20they%20could.%20In%20broken%20English%20they%20sang%20the%20Star-Spangled%20Banner%20and%20God%20Bless%20America%20and%20I%20wondered%20what%20it%20would%20have%20sounded%20like%20sung%20in%20Italian.%20Among%20themselves,%20the%20adult%20spoke%20their%20mother%20tongue.%20It%20was%20a%20familiar%20sound%20when%20the%20men%20played%20pinochle%20or%20the%20women%20cooked%20side%20by%20side%20in%20the%20kitchen%20but%20it%20was%20never%20spoken%20to%20the%20children%20either%20by%20the%20family%20elders%20or%20my%20parents.%20%20Years%20later,%20I%20found%20out%20why,%20though%20I%20regret%20that%20we%20weren't%20taught%20that%20beautiful%20musical%20language.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAt%20the%20outbreak%20of%20WWII,%20Italian%20was%20considered%20the%20language%20of%20the%20enemy!%201942%20America--%20over%201,500%20Italian%20immigrants%20were%20arrested%20by%20the%20FBI,%20many%20for%20curfew%20violations,%20and%20some%20interned%20in%20military%20camps%20for%20up%20to%20two%20years.%20Over%20600,000%20Italian%20Americans%20would%20be%20branded%20%22enemy%20aliens%22--%20possible%20fascists,%20loyal%20to%20Benito%20Mussolini.%20The%20result%20of%20this%20prejudice%20was%20devastating,%20so%20many%20in%20this%20generation%20did%20not%20teach%20their%20children%20Italian.%20It%20wasn't%20passed%20down%20to%20me%20or%20my%20siblings.%20What%20a%20shame.%20Una%20Storia%20Segreta%20(a%20secret%20story)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20on%20those%204th%20of%20Julys%20celebrated%20in%20the%20Bronx%20(NY),%20I%20was%20unaware%20of%20the%20%22secret%20story%22,%20I%20was%20only%20aware%20that%20when%20the%20last%20firecracker%20exploded%20in%20the%20streets%20it%20was%20time%20to%20gather%20with%20loved%20ones%20in%20my%20Nonni's%20basement%20kitchen.%20The%20long%20table%20groaned%20under%20the%20weight%20of%20sesame%20seed%20studded%20heros%20filled%20with%20salami,%20mortadella,%20ham,%20provolone%20&%20roasted%20red%20peppers.%20Beside%20dark%20pans%20of%20lasagna%20were%20bowls%20of%20fried%20meatballs,%20platters%20of%20eggplant%20parmigiana,%20huge%20green%20salad%20dressed%20with%20the%20finest%20olive%20oil,%20balsamic%20vinegar,%20kalamata%20olives%20and%20chunks%20of%20Gorgonzola,%20stuffed%20artichokes%20and%20steamed%20broccoli.%20There%20was%20always%20meat-%20maybe%20a%20beef%20or%20pork%20roast,%20roasted%20chicken%20or%20braciole%20(stuffed%20&%20rolled%20flank%20steak).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENot%20only%20did%20my%20ancestors%20try%20to%20simulate%20into%20American%20society%20by%20learning%20the%20customs%20and%20language,%20but%20the%20recipes,%20too.%20As%20familiar%20as%20pasta%20and%20chicken%20cacciatore%20were%20to%20us,%20Nonna%20&%20Momma%20enjoyed%20putting%20an%20%22American%20Meal%22%20on%20the%20table.%20Which%20proves%20that%20a%20good%20cook%20can%20cook%20anything!%20Breaded%20pork%20chops%20and%20creamy%20mashed%20potatoes,%20pot%20roast%20with%20hearty%20vegetables,%20classic%20mac%20&%20cheese,%20even%20tuna%20casserole%20might%20be%20on%20our%20weekly%20menu.%20I%20much%20loved%20the%20fact%20that%20my%20mom%20would%20make%20Italian%20meatloaf%20one%20week%20and%20an%20American%20meatloaf%20another%20week.%20Italian%20was%20stuffed%20with%20mozzarella%20cheese,%20slices%20of%20hard%20boiled%20egg%20and%20thinly%20sliced%20salami.%20Ah,%20but%20the%20American%20meatloaf%20was%20stuffed%20with%20bacon%20and%20cheddar%20cheese...yum!%20and%20topped%20with%20more%20bacon%20and%20slathered%20with%20ketchup%20mixed%20with%20...well,%20I'll%20stop%20here.%20Read%20my%20recipe%20and%20see%20what%20makes%20my%20family's%20American%20Meatloaf%20so%20very%20special...just%20like%20the%20country%20it's%20named%20after%20and%20loved%20by%20my%20wonderful%20Italian%20ancestors.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAmerican%20Meatloaf%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPre-heat%20oven%20350%20degrees.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20bowl%20mix%20ground%20meat%20with%20egg,%20onion%20soup%20mix,%20parsley%20and%20milk.%20Mix%20until%20blended,%20but%20don't%20handle%20meat%20too%20much%20or%20it%20will%20get%20tough.%20In%20a%20separate%20small%20bowl%20mix%20together%20ketchup,%20Worcestershire%20sauce%20and%20brown%20sugar.%20Mix%20until%20smooth.%20Put%20meat%20on%20a%20sheet%20of%20wax%20paper%20and%20flatten%20it%20out.%20Put%20cheese%20in%20center%20of%20flattened%20meat%20and%20top%20with%203%20slices%20of%20bacon.%20Bring%20sides%20up%20and%20to%20the%20center,%20then%20bring%20both%20ends%20up%20and%20to%20the%20center%20until%20filling%20is%20covered.%20Shape%20into%20a%20loaf.%20Place%20in%20baking%20pan.%20Make%20an%20indentation%20down%20the%20middle%20of%20the%20loaf.%20Pour%20most%20of%20the%20ketchup%20mixture%20into%20well%20and%20spread%20over%20meatloaf%20including%20the%20sides.%20Place%20bacon%20on%20top%20and%20drizzle%20the%20remaining%20%22sauce%22%20over%20the%20top.%20Bake%20for%2045%20minutes.%20Cool%20just%20a%20bit%20and%20slice.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemember%20To%20Make%20Memories%20At%20The%20Table!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
