%20to%20the%20yard.%20Germany%20does%20breakfast%20Like%20A%20Boss%20-%20Photo%20by%20Wasabi%20PrimeI%20mentioned%20before%20in%20a%20post%20about%20our%20trip%20to%20Germany,%20that%20the%20traditional%20Bavarian%20brunch,%20fruschoppen,%20was%20one%20of%20the%20greatest%20discoveries%20my%20appetite%20ever%20had.%20It's%20pretty%20much%20the%20perfect%20meal:%20sausage,%20fresh%20pretzels,%20sauerkraut,%20pickles,%20potato%20salad,%20and%20copious%20steins%20of%20beer.%20All%20had%20in%20the%20later%20hours%20of%20morning,%20into%20the%20afternoon.%20Granted,%20it's%20not%20your%20typical%20Eggs%20Benedict%20or%20waffles%20and%20pancakes,%20but%20why%20should%20a%20definition%20of%20a%20late%20morning%20meal%20be%20so%20narrowly%20defined?%20And%20how%20many%20ways%20can%20you%20possibly%20have%20Eggs-Benny%20by%20now,%20your%20brunch%20appetite%20must%20be%20craving%20something%20else%20by%20now.Sausage%20par-taaaaay!%20-%20Photos%20by%20Wasabi%20PrimeThe%20answer%20to%20the%20mundane%20brunch%20gathering%20can%20be%20found%20through%20German%20ingenuity.%20And%20having%20access%20to%20a%20deli%20that%20procures%20traditional%20Bavarian%20sausages%20and%20fresh%20pretzel%20bread.%20Another%20great%20thing%20about%20this%20style%20of%20brunch%20is,%20you're%20mostly%20prepping%20the%20food,%20very%20little%20cooking%20is%20involved,%20unless%20you%20want%20to%20make%20the%20sausage%20and%20pretzels%20from%20scratch.%20Not%20impossible,%20an%20enviable%20challenge,%20but%20not%20for%20me%20on%20a%20lazy%20weekend%20over%20the%20holidays.%20I%20sourced%20all%20the%20sausage%20and%20pretzel%20bread%20from%20Liebchen%20Delicatessen,%20over%20in%20Bellevue;%20they%20put%20together%20delicious%20deli%20sandwiches%20at%20their%20meat%20counter,%20and%20they%20also%20sell%20a%20lot%20of%20European%20snacks,%20sundries%20and%20ingredients%20that%20might%20be%20harder%20to%20find%20in%20a%20typical%20grocery%20store.%20I%20was%20buying%20in%20bulk,%20and%20they%20were%20able%20to%20supply%20me%20with%20%20large%20quantities%20of%20Seattle-made%20pork-based%20knackwurst/knockwurst,%20pale%20veal-based%20bockwurst,%20and%20a%20smoked%20frankfurter-style%20sausage.%20The%20bockwurst%20had%20the%20most%20subtle%20flavor%20and%20the%20pale%20color%20probably%20seemed%20a%20little%20off-putting,%20but%20it%20had%20a%20nice,%20light%20taste,%20given%20the%20veal%20filling.%20The%20knockwurst%20and%20frankfurter%20sausages%20were%20the%20most%20popular;%20fuller,%20meatier%20flavors,%20especially%20the%20smoked%20sausage.%20For%20American%20palates%20that%20are%20used%20to%20stronger%20flavors,%20at%20least%20in%20this%20area,%20going%20with%20the%20bigger%20flavors%20is%20probably%20best.%20Bavarian%20brunch%20is%20all%20about%20the%20accessories,%20both%20sweet%20and%20savory%20-%20Photos%20by%20Wasabi%20PrimePretzel%20bread%20is%20a%20perfect%20accompaniment%20to%20the%20rich%20sausages.%20I%20went%20with%20little%20loaves,%20versus%20the%20traditional%20woven%20knot%20shape.%20The%20loaves%20were%20easier%20to%20slice%20in%20half%20so%20people%20could%20tear%20into%20them%20or%20make%20mini%20buns%20and%20eat%20with%20the%20sausages.%20The%20pretzel%20bread%20has%20a%20nice%20salty,%20bitter%20skin,%20and%20a%20tender,%20chewy%20inside,%20like%20a%20bagel.%20Pretzels%20have%20so%20easily%20transformed%20into%20the%20bite-sized,%20crunchy%20snack,%20we%20forget%20its%20bready%20origins%20and%20what%20a%20great%20side%20dish%20it%20can%20be%20to%20rich%20meats.%20And%20it's%20all%20about%20mixing%20the%20flavors%20and%20textures%20--%20having%20a%20couple%20of%20different%20mustards,%20pickles,%20and%20a%20big%20bowl%20of%20sauerkraut%20balanced%20out%20the%20sausages.%20I%20made%20a%20big%20bowl%20of%20German-style%20potato%20salad,%20which%20I'm%20not%20really%20sure%20what%20makes%20it%20different%20from%20typical%20potato%20salad%20except%20that%20some%20recipes%20said%20it%20needed%20to%20be%20served%20warm%20versus%20cold.%20Room%20temperature%20was%20fine%20by%20me,%20since%20this%20was%20a%20buffet,%20but%20a%20side%20dish%20with%20a%20little%20chill%20to%20it%20was%20nice,%20up%20against%20all%20this%20other%20food.Flammekuchen,%20my%20one%20true%20love!%20-%20Photos%20by%20Wasabi%20Prime%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESince%20it%20was%20the%20holidays,%20there%20were%20other%20random%20sweets,%20like%20apple%20tarts%20(they%20should%20have%20been%20strudel,%20but%20I%20had%20too%20much%20filling%20and%20not%20enough%20pastry%20dough%20-%20whoops),%20and%20pumpkin-filled%20hand%20pies.%20Not%20traditional,%20I%20just%20had%20the%20leftover%20pumpkin%20filling.%20The%20big%20baked%20treat%20that%20I%20was%20excited%20to%20make%20wasn't%20sweet%20at%20all,%20it%20was%20the%20holy,%20almighty%20flammekuchen/tarte%20flamme,%20which%20we%20became%20addicted%20to%20in%20Alsace.%20A%20treasured%20flatbread%20of%20deliciousness,%20covered%20in%20cream%20sauce,%20cheese%20and%20bacon,%20it%20was%20a%20super-rich%20addition%20to%20the%20table%20of%20already%20rich%20foods.%20I%20used%20a%20recipe%20from%20Eat.%20Live.%20Travel.%20Write's%20blog,%20which%20also%20celebrates%20this%20dish%20as%20a%20wondrous%20thing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAll%20this,%20and%20I%20didn't%20even%20mention%20the%20beer.%20Well,%20mostly%20because%20we%20didn't%20stick%20strictly%20to%20tradition%20--%20we%20had%20a%20couple%20of%20German-style%20beers,%20very%20light%20and%20easy%20to%20drink%20with%20all%20this%20rich%20food,%20but%20people%20brought%20favorite%20beers,%20which%20means%20it%20all%20turns%20into%20a%20hop-gasmic%20event%20of%20Pacific%20Northwest%20proportions.%20A%20Hefeweizen%20would%20be%20a%20good%20beer%20choice,%20we%20had%20an%20interesting%20grapefruit-flavored%20Radler%20which%20was%20an%20ideal%20breakfast%20beer.%20I%20opted%20for%20glasses%20of%20bubbly,%20but%20that's%20just%20me,%20and%20there%20was%20plenty%20of%20coffee-sipping.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAll%20parties%20end%20with%20an%20overstuffed%20dog%20and%20Archer%20reruns%20-%20Photos%20by%20Wasabi%20PrimeThe%20brunch%20table%20was%20eventually%20ravaged,%20the%20feast%20commenced%20to%20a%20slow%20graze,%20I%20had%20nearly%20killed%20Indy%20with%20feeding%20her%20too%20much%20sausages%20(such%20a%20no-no;%20the%20rich%20meat%20causes%20the%20pancreas%20to%20inflame%20-%20double%20whoops),%20and%20everyone%20zoned-out%20on%20their%20sausage%20and%20beer%20buzz%20with%20Archer%20reruns.%20A%20sign%20of%20a%20successful%20party%20come%20to%20a%20close.%20You%20certainly%20don't%20need%20to%20wait%20for%20the%20holidays%20to%20hold%20a%20fruschoppen%20gathering;%20I%20highly%20recommend%20doing%20these%20frequently,%20since%20it's%20unique,%20relatively%20fuss-free%20and%20much%20easier%20than%20throwing%20a%20custom-crepe%20or%20DIY%20omelet%20party,%20because%20no%20one's%20got%20time%20for%20that%20business.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
