%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20are%20easy%20going%20people.%20We%20would%20go%20out%20everyday,%20scour%20the%20city%20the%20whole%20day%20and%20came%20back%20late,%20tired%20to%20the%20bones.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EVisiting%20new%20places,%20restaurants,%20shops,%20parks%20...%20we%20just%20didn't%20get%20enough%20of%20everything.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen%20sit%20up%20and%20chat%20into%20the%20night%20...%20with%20a%20round%20of%20coffee%20every%20other%20hour%20...%20taking%20turns%20to%20make%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFinally,%20at%20dawn,%20Bhaiya%20would%20%20insist%20that%20we%20have%20the%20morning%20tea%20too%20...%20which%20he%20would%20make%20...%20and%20then%20catch%20some%20sleep,%20which%20would%20be%20for%20only%20a%20few%20hours.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20we%20were%20ready%20to%20face%20another%20day.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20three%20whole%20days%20of%20eating%20out,%20shopping%20and%20more%20eating,%20we%20went%20for%20our%20road%20trip%20to%20Pondicherry.%20It%20was%20fun.%20Chatting,%20laughing,%20singing%20together,%20munching%20on%20snacks,%20peppered%20with%20the%20young%20boy's%20one%20line%20interludes%20...%20it%20was%20a%20great%20drive.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20when%20Bhabhi%20fell%20ill,%20it%20gave%20a%20different%20twist%20to%20our%20vacation.%20But%20things%20smoothened%20out%20and%20all%20was%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20was%20on%20one%20of%20our%20drives%20to%20the%20city%20that%20we%20heard%20young%20R%20exclaim%20that%20the%20guy%20in%20front%20of%20us%20was%20riding%20a%20scooter,%20wearing%20nothing!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhere?!%20where?!%20All%20of%20us%20looked%20out%20...%20right,%20left,%20straight%20...%20but%20couldn't%20see%20a%20man%20without%20clothes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20riding%20a%20scooter!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHe%20pointed%20out%20to%20a%20man%20riding%20a%20little%20ahead%20of%20us.%20He%20was%20fully%20clothed%20in%20a%20shirt%20and%20a%20white%20cloth%20...%20like%20the%20dhoti%20...%20around%20his%20waist.%20It%20was%20flapping%20in%20the%20wind,%20baring%20his%20legs%20to%20above%20the%20knee.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhich%20was%20almost%20nothing%20to%20the%20young%20boy%20from%20up%20North.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHis%20first%20visit%20to%20the%20South,%20we%20realised%20a%20lot%20of%20things%20...%20not%20only%20food%20...%20were%20new%20to%20him.%20:-)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnother%20shock%20he%20had%20was%20at%20the%20Chidambaram%20temple%20near%20Pondicherry%20...%20where%20men%20have%20to%20remove%20their%20clothing%20of%20their%20upper%20body%20to%20be%20able%20to%20get%20a%20darshan.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20that%20is%20another%20story.%20:-)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Mushur%20dal%20or%20the%20Red%20lentils%20are%20a%20part%20of%20any%20Bengali%20meal.%20The%20light%20dal%20goes%20great%20with%20rice%20to%20make%20a%20simple%20meal%20...%20and%20is%20also%20the%20perfect%20foil%20to%20any%20other%20spicy%20non%20veg%20dish%20on%20the%20side.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAt%20times,%20they%20are%20soaked,%20ground%20to%20a%20paste%20and%20deep%20fried%20to%20make%20these%20boras%20or%20fried%20dumplings.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20a%20little%20chopped%20onion%20and%20green%20chillies,%20these%20crunchies%20are%20perfect%20with%20a%20meal%20of%20khichudi%20or%20plain%20steamed%20rice%20and%20dal.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOr%20as%20a%20snack%20with%20some%20chutney%20or%20the%20good%20old%20tomato%20ketchup.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20made%20a%20simple,%20very%20light%20jhol%20using%20them%20...%20on%20one%20of%20those%20days%20when%20the%20fridge%20was%20bare%20and%20there%20were%20%20no%20fresh%20vegetables%20at%20home,%20to%20whip%20up%20a%20meal%20with.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20jhol%20is%20very%20light,%20almost%20like%20a%20thin%20soup%20and%20has%20very%20simple%20flavours%20...%20another%20easy%20dish%20from%20my%20kitchen.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20boiled%20for%20a%20long%20time,%20it%20picks%20up%20the%20flavours%20of%20the%20jeera,%20tomatoes%20and%20the%20red%20chilli%20powder%20...%20as%20do%20the%20potatoes%20too.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20after%20the%20boras%20have%20soaked%20long%20enough,%20you%20can%20find%20the%20roasted%20jeera%20powder's%20flavour%20in%20them%20too.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAll%20in%20all,%20this%20simple,%20purely%20vegetarian%20and%20jhol%20will%20taste%20simple%20but%20will%20be%20very%20flavourful%20too.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20can%20be%20made%20with%20left%20over%20boras%20/%20vadas%20/%20pakodas%20too.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20Boras%20:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENeed%20:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMushur%20dal%20/%20Red%20lentils%20-%20soaked%20for%20around%202%20hrs%20and%20ground%20to%20a%20paste%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChopped%20onions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChopped%20green%20chillies%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChopped%20ginger%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESalt%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOil%20for%20deep%20frying%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHow%20to:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMix%20everything%20together.%20Scoop%20out%20small%20balls%20and%20deep%20fry%20in%20heated%20oil.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20jhol/%20gravy%20:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENeed%20:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHow%20to%20:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20oil.%20Add%20the%20jeera.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20it%20starts%20to%20splutter,%20add%20the%20onions%20and%20fry%20only%20for%20a%20while.%20Do%20not%20brown%20them.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20add%20the%20potatoes%20and%20fry%20again%20on%20high%20heat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20ginger%20paste,%20haldi%20powder,%20red%20chilli%20powder%20and%20salt.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20enough%20water%20to%20cover%20the%20potatoes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECover%20and%20cook%20till%20the%20potatoes%20are%20done.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemove%20cover%20and%20check%20if%20there%20is%20enough%20water.%20Else%20add%20more%20water%20and%20check%20...%20if%20needed%20add%20a%20little%20more%20salt.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20it%20comes%20to%20a%20boil,%20add%20the%20dal%20boras/%20fried%20lentil%20balls,%20the%20roasted%20jeera%20powder%20and%20a%20pinch%20of%20sugar.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECover%20and%20simmer%20for%20a%20while.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20boras%20will%20soak%20up%20a%20lot%20of%20water%20...%20so%20keep%20adding%20accordingly.%20And%20keep%20checking%20for%20salt%20when%20you%20add%20water.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20you%20get%20a%20jhol%20of%20your%20desired%20consistency%20and%20amount,%20raise%20the%20heat%20and%20give%20a%20final%20boil.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemove%20and%20keep%20covered%20for%20a%20while.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServe%20hot.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20goes%20great%20with%20rotis%20or%20parathas.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEnjoy!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
