%20where%20post-game%20drinking%20involved%20not%20a%20small%20number%20of%20beers%20accompanied%20with%20steamed%20clams.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EClams%20and%20mussels%20are%20almost%20the%20same%20thing,%20right?%20Well,%20Dan%20has%20continued%20his%20hatred%20of%20my%20beloved%20black%20bivalves%20over%20the%20course%20of%20two%20decades%20and%20I've%20only%20had%20them%20several%20times%20since%20as%20supporting%20players%20in%20a%20few%20plates%20of%20restaurant%20Zuppa%20di%20Pesce.%20I%20found%20myself%20eyeing%20them%20longingly%20last%20week%20at%20the%20supermarket%20fish%20counter%20and%20decided%20to%20grab%20a%20bagful,%20since%20they%20were%20so%20darn%20cheap%20($2%20a%20pound!).%20I'd%20cook%20some%20up%20for%20myself%20and%20see%20if%20I%20could%20attract%20anyone%20else%20to%20join%20me%20in%20a%20heavenly%20plate%20of%20mussels.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20had%20been%20so%20long%20since%20I%20had%20prepared%20mussels%20I%20had%20to%20look%20up%20how%20to%20do%20so%20in%20some%20of%20my%20cookbooks.%20I%20found%20out%20that%20one%20should%20try%20to%20get%20farm-raised%20mussels,%20if%20possible,%20which%20are%20grown%20on%20strings%20suspended%20in%20water,%20rather%20than%20mussels%20dug%20up%20from%20muddy%20sea%20bottoms,%20as%20the%20latter%20will%20contain%20much%20more%20dirt,%20even%20after%20long%20soaking%20and%20prep%20times.%20Well,%20my%20mussels%20had%20big%20chunks%20of%20stone%20attached%20to%20their%20lovely,%20long%20beards,%20so%20they%20were%20definitely%20children%20of%20the%20sea%20bottom.%20The%20mussels%20all%20got%20their%20beards%20barbered%20and%20their%20shells%20buffed%20and%20further%20spa%20treatment%20with%20an%20overnight%20soaking%20in%20the%20fridge,%20with%20some%20corn%20meal%20%22bath%20salts%22%20sprinkled%20in%20to%20encourage%20my%20shellfish%20to%20expel%20their%20sandiness.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20pampering%20was%20over%20the%20next%20day,%20when%20they%20got%20scrubbed%20again,%20rinsed%20in%20fresh%20water,%20trimmed%20anew%20and%20then%20readied%20for%20the%20cooking%20pot.%20You%20must%20also%20discard%20any%20mussels%20that%20won't%20close%20tightly.%20I%20decided%20to%20try%20recreating%20my%20romantic%20mussel%20meal%20of%20yore,%20but%20couldn't%20find%20an%20exact%20recipe,%20so%20I%20came%20up%20with%20this%20Frenchified%20version:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20a%20heavy-bottomed%20soup%20pot%20over%20a%20medium%20flame.%20Melt%20butter%20and%20then%20add%20garlic%20and%20shallots.%20Cook,%20stirring%20occasionally,%20until%20softened,%20about%205%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20white%20wine%20and%20bring%20to%20boil.%20Let%20boil,%20until%20reduced%20by%20about%20half%20and%20then%20add%20mussels.%20Cover%20and%20cook,%205-7%20minutes,%20shaking%20the%20pot%20every%20couple%20of%20minutes,%20to%20make%20sure%20mussels%20are%20cooking%20evenly.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUncover%20pot,%20remove%20any%20mussels%20that%20haven't%20opened%20and%20discard.%20Add%20salt%20and%20pepper%20to%20taste,%20parsley%20and%20half-and-half%20to%20pot%20and%20stir%202-3%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServe%20hot%20with%20lots%20of%20crusty%20rolls%20(Crusty%20French%20Rolls%20from%20Bette%20Hagman's%20wonderful%20%22The%20Gluten-Free%20Gourmet%20Bakes%20Bread%22%20cookbook)%20on%20the%20side%20to%20mop%20up%20the%20luscious%20sauce.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServes%202-4%20(2%20mussel%20lovers%20as%20a%20dinner%20entree,%204%20first%20course%20servings)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20surprise%20move,%20Dan%20tried%20them%20and%20announced%20that%20they%20were%20delicious%20and%20more%20delicate-tasting%20than%20he%20had%20remembered.%20He%20actually%20ate%20his%20whole%20portion!%20My%20daughters%20were%20not%20in%20love%20with%20my%20romantic%20Love%20Mussels%20and%20after%20dissecting%20them%20rather%20rudely%20at%20the%20table,%20went%20off%20in%20search%20of%20a%20peanut%20butter%20dinner,%20leaving%20more%20for%20their%20appreciative%20parents%20(and%20clearing%20the%20way%20for%20some%20clandestine%20post-prandial%20smooching!)%20Ooooh%20la%20la!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20am%20sending%20this%20romantic%20recipe%20over%20to%20Joan%20at%20Foodalogue,%20where%20we%20are%20taking%20a%20virtual%20tour%20of%20France%20this%20week%20for%20her%20Culinary%20Tour%20Around%20the%20World%20Event.%20Joan%20will%20have%20a%20French%20roundup%20in%20the%20next%20several%20days,%20and%20then%20I%20believe%20we%20are%20traveling%20to%20Portugal%20to%20check%20out%20the%20sites.%20And,%20the%20food,%20of%20course!%20Come%20join%20us...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAu%20revoir%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Exoxoxoxoxo%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Exoxoxoxoxo%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
