.%20I%20had%20purchased%20all%20necessary%20ingredients%20and%20was%20ready%20for%20a%20day%20of%20cooking.%20I%20made%20all%20my%20side%20dishes%20and%20desserts%20in%20the%20morning%20so%20I%20could%20have%20the%20oven%20for%20the%20turkey%20all%20afternoon.%20The%20dinner%20included%20my%20husband%20and%20I,%20my%20brother%20who%20was%20living%20with%20us%20at%20the%20time%20and%20I%20think%20one%20of%20his%20friends%20%E2%80%93%20whom%20I%E2%80%99ve%20known%20since%20they%20were%20in%20grade%20school%20together.%20There%E2%80%99s%20a%20chance%20my%20husband%E2%80%99s%20grandparents%20witnessed%20this%20fiasco%20also%20but%20that%20might%20have%20been%20a%20different%20Thanksgiving.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAt%20any%20rate,%20I%20pulled%20the%20turkey%20out%20in%20the%20morning%20to%20see%20if%20it%20had%20defrosted.%20It%20was%20still%20frozen.%20Not%20just%20slightly%20frozen%20but%20ice%20block%20from%20Antarctica%20frozen.%20I%20got%20all%20resourceful%20and%20tossed%20it%20in%20the%20bathtub%20with%20cold%20water%20that%20I%20diligently%20changed%20every%2030-40%20minutes.%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20use%20my%20kitchen%20sink%20because%20I%20had%20so%20much%20cooking%20to%20do%20all%20morning.%20Besides%20the%20turkey%20was%20all%20wrapped%20up%20so%20it%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20that%20gross.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(Okay,%20it%20might%20have%20been%20gross.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAt%202pm%20I%20retrieved%20the%20turkey%20from%20its%20day%20long%20bath%20and%E2%80%A6%20it%20was%20still%20frozen%20of%20course.%20Not%20quite%20as%20rock%20hard%20though%20so%20I%20figured%20I%20could%20just%20roast%20it%20anyway%20and%20it%20would%20take%20a%20little%20longer.%20Dinner%20was%20planned%20for%204pm.%20I%20started%20checking%20on%20the%20turkey%20at%205pm.%20And%206pm.%20And%207pm.%20If%20I%20remember%20correctly%20we%20finally%20sat%20down%20to%20dinner%20at%208:45%E2%80%A6%20though%20it%20might%20have%20been%20after%209pm.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESince%20it%20was%20Thanksgiving%20none%20of%20us%20had%20eaten%20all%20day%20(well,%20I%E2%80%99m%20sure%20I%20did%20being%20pregnant%20and%20all).%20So%20waiting%20until%209pm%20for%20dinner%20%E2%80%93%20a%20dinner%20that%20most%20people%20eat%20around%202-3pm%20%E2%80%93%20was%20a%20bit%20excessive%20to%20say%20the%20least.%20I%20was%20the%20worst%20hostess%20ever%20that%20day.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20I%E2%80%99m%20in%20a%20sharing%20mood%E2%80%A6%20let%20me%20tell%20you%20about%20my%20first%20Thanksgiving%20dinner.%20My%20husband%20&%20I%20were%20living%20in%20Iowa%20and%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20come%20home%20for%20the%20holiday.%20We%20decided%20to%20recreate%20all%20of%20our%20favorite%20parts%20of%20Thanksgiving%20so%20we%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20be%20as%20homesick.%20I%20made%20mushrooms%20sauteed%20in%20burgundy;%20broccoli,%20cheese%20&%20rice%20casserole;%20two%20kinds%20of%20dressing;%20mashed%20potatoes%20and%20of%20course%20a%20turkey.%20All%20in%20the%20galley%20kitchen%20of%20our%20one%20bedroom%20apartment.%20There%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20enough%20room%20on%20the%20counters%20to%20put%20out%20all%20the%20food.%20We%20spread%20it%20out%20on%20the%20counters%20and%20our%20table%20(a%20card%20table%20with%20space%20for%20just%20two%20chairs).%20We%20piled%20our%20plates%20high,%20set%20them%20on%20our%20chairs%20and%20then%20found%20places%20to%20put%20all%20the%20food%20on%20the%20counters%20and%20in/on%20top%20of%20the%20stove.%20It%20might%20have%20been%20a%20bit%20excessive%20for%20just%20two%20people.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20this%20Thanksgiving%20I%20should%20be%20thankful%20that%20I%E2%80%99ve%20become%20a%20better%20hostess.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20Loading...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERelated%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
