.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20the%20first%20%22meeting%22,%20so%20we%20are%20focusing%20on%20dairy%20and%20cereal%20and%20snacks.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20me,%20I%20found%20quite%20a%20few%20of%20the%20same%20(or%20similar)%20recipes%20that%20we've%20been%20tackling%20in%20the%20Cook%20It%202012%20challenge%20in%20these%20first%20chapters%20(ricotta%20cheese,%20butter%20and%20buttermilk)%20or%20that%20I've%20already%20made%20on%20my%20own%20(cereal%20bars).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20I%20haven't%20made%20toaster%20pastries.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(Which%20I%20guess%20we%20can't%20call%20pop%20tarts%20without%20some%20kind%20of%20trademark%20infringement,%20right?)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20certainly%20not%20Nutella-filled%20toaster%20pastries!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlana's%20recipe%20starts%20with%20making%20your%20own%20pie%20crust%20(from%20Aisle%206,%20so%20this%20is%20a%20twofer!).%20I%20was%20very%20intrigued%20and%20hopeful%20about%20her%20crust%20recipe%20because%20it%20calls%20for%20using%20a%20stand%20mixer%20to%20blend%20the%20butter%20and%20flour%20mixture;%20normally%20I%20do%20this%20with%20my%20fingers%20and%20it's%20damned%20tedious,%20albeit%20a%20good%20arm%20workout.%20I%20can%20happily%20report%20that%20it%20works!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdditionally,%20Alana's%20recipe%20calls%20for%20cutting%20the%20dough%20into%20rectangles%20(a%20la%20poptarts)%20but%20I%20had%20just%20gotten%20a%20huge%20set%20of%20fun%20round%20pastry%20cutters%20so%20I%20decided%20to%20make%20mine%20circular%20instead.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EResult?%20A%20bit%20time-consuming%20(if%20you%20made%20the%20dough%20in%20advance%20it%20would%20be%20less%20so%20--%20or%20you%20could%20just%20%22cheat%22%20and%20use%20refrigerated%20dough,%20but%20that%20wouldn't%20support%20the%20purpose%20of%20the%20book%20very%20well!!!)%20but%20very,%20very%20delicious.%20The%20dough%20was%20flaky%20and%20buttery%20and%20puffed%20up%20nicely%20--%20and%20the%20Nutella%20filling%20was%20perfect:%20not%20too%20runny%20or%20gooey.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20if%20you%20needed%20more%20convincing,%20they%20tasted%20a%20whole%20lot%20like%20the%20pan%20au%20chocolat%20that%20I%20had%20for%20breakfast%20each%20morning%20on%20our%20trip%20to%20Paris%20this%20year.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMoreover,%20Alana%20suggests%20making%20these%20with%20savory%20fillings%20as%20well%20(ricotta%20cheese,%20pesto),%20which%20would%20be%20really%20lovely%20as%20an%20accompaniment%20with%20a%20nice%20bowl%20of%20soup,%20don't%20you%20think?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI'll%20be%20posting%20more%20of%20my%20recipe%20attempts%20as%20part%20of%20the%20FSC%20book%20club,%20so%20be%20sure%20to%20check%20back.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUntil%20then,%20enjoy%20the%20poptarts%20...%20I%20mean,%20toaster%20pastries!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENutella%20Toaster%20Pastries%20%20(adapted%20from%20Alana%20Chernila's%20Homemade%20Pantry)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients%20for%20the%20crust:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections%20for%20the%20crust:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EToss%20the%20butter%20chunks%20and%20flour%20in%20the%20bowl%20of%20a%20stand%20mixer.%20Place%20into%20freezer%20for%2010%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20small%20measuring%20cup%20or%20bowl,%20combine%20the%20vodka%20(or%20vinegar)%20and%20the%20salt%20with%201/3%20cup%20of%20cold%20water.%20Stir%20rapidly%20until%20salt%20dissolves,%20then%20put%20bowl%20in%20the%20freezer%20for%2010%20minutes%20as%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemove%20the%20mixer%20bowl%20from%20the%20freezer%20and%20beat%20the%20mixture%20on%20low%20speed%20(shield%20it%20a%20little%20in%20case%20some%20of%20the%20flour%20wants%20to%20fly%20out%20initially)%20until%20it%20resembles%20coarse%20meal%20and%20butter%20pieces%20are%20only%20about%20pea-sized.%20Add%20the%20liquid%20mixture%20(from%20the%20freezer)%20and%20mix%20until%20the%20dough%20comes%20together%20in%20a%20ball.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETurn%20the%20dough%20out%20onto%20a%20lightly%20floured%20surface%20and%20divide%20it%20into%20two%20equal%20portions.%20Flatten%20each%20into%20a%20disc,%20wrap%20in%20wax%20paper%20and%20refrigerate%20for%20at%20least%20two%20hours.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients%20for%20the%20pastries:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20egg%20beaten%20with%201%20tablespoon%20of%20water%20(to%20make%20a%20wash)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJar%20of%20Nutella%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections%20for%20the%20pastries:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20oven%20to%20375%20degrees.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoll%20one%20disc%20of%20dough%20into%20a%20large%20circle%20or%20rectangle,%20a%20little%20less%20than%201/4-inch%20thick.%20Using%20a%20round%20pastry%20cutter%20(mine%20was%203.5%20inches),%20biscuit%20cutter%20or%20drinking%20glass,%20cut%20dough%20into%20as%20many%20circles%20as%20you%20can,%20re-rolling%20the%20dough%20scraps%20as%20necessary.%20Lay%20the%20circles%20on%20a%20baking%20sheet%20lined%20with%20parchment%20paper.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOnto%20each%20circle%20dollop%20a%20blob%20of%20Nutella.%20I%20know%20this%20is%20not%20very%20specific,%20but%20it%20will%20depend%20on%20the%20size%20of%20your%20circles.%20For%20my%203.5-inch%20circles,%20I%20used%20a%20heaping%20tablespoon%20but%20I%20could%20have%20added%20quite%20a%20bit%20more%20--%20be%20generous!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoll%20out%20the%20second%20disc%20of%20dough%20and%20cut%20out%20circles%20as%20before%20(make%20sure%20you%20end%20up%20with%20the%20same%20number%20of%20circles).%20Lay%20this%20second%20set%20of%20circles%20on%20top%20of%20the%20first,%20Nutella-covered%20set.%20Using%20a%20fork,%20press%20the%20edges%20together%20and%20poke%20a%20few%20holes%20in%20the%20center%20of%20each%20pastry.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGenerously%20brush%20the%20egg%20wash%20over%20all%20the%20pastries%20and%20pop%20them%20into%20the%20oven%20for%20about%2025-30%20minutes%20or%20until%20they%20are%20golden%20and%20look%20sufficiently%20yummy%20to%20you.%20The%20filling%20will%20be%20hot%20so%20be%20sure%20to%20cool%20them%20a%20bit%20on%20a%20wire%20rack%20before%20eating.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPS:%20According%20to%20Alana,%20you%20can%20freeze%20the%20unbaked%20pastries,%20in%20a%20single%20layer%20on%20a%20baking%20sheet,%20then%20store%20them%20in%20a%20freezer-safe%20container%20and%20remove%20one%20by%20one%20(or%20by%20the%20boatload)%20to%20bake%20as%20needed.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
