,%20but%20they're%20a%20widely%20celebrated%20ice%20creamery%20that%20creates%20innovative%20flavors%20utilizing%20both%20sweet%20and%20savory%20ingredients%20incorporating%20farm-fresh%20goods%20from%20local%20growers.%20They%20turn%20the%20notion%20of%20a%20%22cute%22%20ice%20cream%20shop%20on%20its%20head,%20drag%20it%20out%20into%20the%20middle%20of%20the%20road%20and%20kick%20it%20a%20few%20times%20before%20cracking%20a%20few%20Yo%20Mama%20jokes%20as%20it%20whimpers%20off%20to%20the%20land%20of%2031%20Flavors.%20Yes,%20it's%20Hipster%20Ice%20Cream%20taken%20to%20Eleven.%20Which%20just%20means%20it's%20flavor-smart,%20pop%20culture-rich%20and%20an%20intelligent%20sense%20of%20humor%20to%20go%20with%20some%20dope-ass%20tasty%20scoopz.%20The%20Humphry%20Slocombe%20shop%20is%20based%20out%20of%20the%20Mission%20District%20in%20San%20Francisco,%20a%20sign%20of%20eternal%20coolness,%20started%20up%20by%20manager%20Sean%20Vahey%20and%20chef%20Jake%20Godby.%20And%20no,%20not%20a%20Humphry%20to%20be%20seen%20among%20the%20lot%20of%20them.%20So%20why%20is%20this%20book%20the%20hotness?%20It%20pretty%20much%20shares%20all%20their%20signature%20ice%20cream%20flavor%20recipes,%20but%20more%20importantly,%20it's%20a%20damn%20funny%20read.%20I%20particularly%20like%20the%20Day%20in%20the%20Life%20of%20Sean/Jake,%20where%20there's%20mentions%20of%20Native%20American%20prostitutes,%20counting%20condoms%20on%20the%20walk%20to%20work,%20trading%20cookies%20for%20cocktails%20and%20boiling%20wieners%20in%20a%20coffee%20maker,%20all%20in%20a%20day%20of%20running%20a%20popular%20ice%20cream%20shop%20in%20the%20Mission.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20what's%20with%20the%20Fetal%20Kitten?%20It's%20written%20on%20a%20Warhol-like%20set%20of%20soup%20can%20art%20on%20the%20shop%20wall%20and%20it's%20the%20de%20facto%20response%20when%20a%20person%20asks,%20%22What's%20your%20next%20kooky%20flavor?%22%20There's%20a%20reason%20behind%20this%20somewhat%20beguilingly%20disgusting%20response,%20which%20is%20that%20their%20ice%20cream%20flavors%20aren't%20weird,%20they're%20innovating%20beyond%20what%20we've%20come%20to%20accept%20as%20traditional%20ice%20cream,%20and%20I%20appreciate%20that.%20I%20also%20appreciate%20the%20part%20of%20the%20story%20where%20they%20write%20%22Fetal%20Kitten%22%20on%20the%20menu,%20then%20cross%20it%20out,%20which%20gets%20responses%20ranging%20from%20shock%20to%20disappointment%20that%20someone%20bogarted%20all%20the%20Fetal%20Kitten%20Ice%20Cream.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJust%20don't%20call%20the%20ice%20cream%20flavors%20%22weird%22%20-%20Photos%20by%20Wasabi%20PrimeI%20did%20not,%20in%20fact,%20make%20ice%20cream%20made%20from%20baby%20cats,%20much%20to%20Indy's%20disappointment.%20I%20went%20a%20little%20more%20middle-of-the-road%20and%20tried%20their%20Roasted%20White%20Chocolate%20and%20Lavender%20ice%20cream.%20The%20roasting%20of%20white%20chocolate%20is%20genius%20because%20to%20be%20honest,%20I%20kind%20of%20hate%20white%20chocolate%20and%20I%20couldn't%20say%20why%20I%20had%20a%20half%20bag%20of%20leftover%20white%20chocolate%20chips%20in%20the%20pantry.%20But%20I%20have%20a%20new%20appreciation%20for%20it%20when%20it's%20roasted%20in%20the%20oven%20at%20300%20degrees%20--%20it%20doesn't%20melt,%20it%20just%20toasts%20and%20the%20flavor%20caramelizes%20into%20something%20better,%20stronger,%20faster,%20more%20Bionic%20and%20Six%20Million%20Dollar%20Manly.%20It%20also%20gets%20dry,%20crumbly%20and%20something%20resembling%20the%20crud%20you'd%20scrape%20off%20your%20shoe,%20so%20steeping%20its%20toasty%20rich%20flavor%20in%20cream%20and%20straining%20out%20the%20ugly%20bits%20makes%20it%20ideal%20for%20ice%20cream.%20A%20beautiful%20ice%20cream%20made%20with%20two%20ingredients%20Jake%20Godby%20hates%20-%20brilliant!%20-%20Photos%20by%20Wasabi%20PrimeI%20also%20had%20quite%20a%20bit%20of%20dried%20lavender,%20leftover%20from%20a%20friend's%20considerable%20home%20garden%20harvest%20a%20few%20seasons%20ago%20--%20the%20stuff%20lasts%20forever%20if%20it's%20sealed%20up%20tight%20and%20stored%20well.%20The%20lavender%20almost%20acts%20like%20vanilla,%20adding%20a%20floral%20roundness%20of%20flavor%20to%20the%20sweet,%20smoky%20white%20chocolate%20roast.%20There's%20also%20a%20fair%20bit%20of%20salt%20in%20their%20recipe,%20two%20teaspoons,%20which%20to%20be%20honest,%20I%20will%20probably%20cut%20back%20a%20little%20of%20it%20when%20making%20this%20again.%20It%20gives%20the%20ice%20cream%20a%20salted%20caramel%20familiarity,%20but%20the%20savory%20aspect%20was%20a%20little%20overwhelming,%20but%20that's%20just%20my%20taste%20and%20customizing%20is%20just%20one%20of%20the%20benefits%20of%20making%20your%20own%20ice%20cream.%20Another%20thing%20I%20noticed%20is%20their%20custard%20is%20very,%20very%20rich.%20As%20in,%20the%20fat%20from%20the%20heavy%20cream%20forms%20a%20hard%20disk%20on%20the%20surface%20after%20it's%20been%20refrigerated%20and%20despite%20trying%20to%20bust%20it%20up%20before%20churning,%20you%20may%20get%20some%20fat%20hunks%20in%20your%20dessert%20because%20most%20home%20ice%20cream%20makers%20probably%20don't%20have%20the%20moxy%20to%20break%20that%20stuff%20down.%20I%20know,%20this%20sounds%20like%20a%20rage%20on%20the%20book,%20and%20it's%20totally%20not,%20I%20think%20if%20you%20want%20a%20real%20ice%20cream%20book,%20this%20is%20the%20one%20to%20get,%20hands-down.%20It's%20just%20some%20personal%20observations%20and%20home-kitchen%20notes%20I%20want%20to%20add%20so%20you're%20prepared%20to%20push%20and%20pull%20things%20a%20little%20as%20you%20try%20the%20recipes,%20like%20any%20cookbook.%20Because%20the%20savoriness%20of%20the%20ice%20cream%20was%20a%20little%20strong%20for%20my%20taste,%20I%20just%20churned%20a%20batch%20of%20vanilla%20ice%20cream%20and%20swirled%20it%20with%20what%20was%20left%20of%20the%20white%20chocolate/lavender.%20It%20made%20for%20a%20very%20creamy%20treat,%20and%20one%20heck%20of%20a%20beer%20float.%20The%20flavor%20is%20strong%20and%20rich%20enough%20to%20where%20it%20stands%20up%20against%20a%20hoppy%20IPA,%20if%20you%20can%20believe%20it.%20The%20sweetness%20of%20the%20toasted%20white%20chocolate%20really%20comes%20through%20to%20balance%20out%20the%20citrus-bitterness%20of%20a%20hop-heavy%20beer.%20So%20even%20though%20I%20monkey-ed%20around%20with%20Humphry%20Slocombe's%20recipe%20a%20little,%20it's%20still%20a%20fantastic%20book%20and%20enjoying%20their%20ice%20cream%20with%20an%20IPA%20was%20a%20fitting%20combination%20of%20California%20and%20Washingtonia.%20No%20fetal%20kittens%20were%20harmed%20in%20the%20writing%20of%20this%20post.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
