%20it%20demands%20from%20you%20multiplies%20many%20times%20over.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUnder%20The%20Tuscan%20Sun,%20the%20book%20club's%20choice%20this%20month,%20chronicles%20the%20author%20Frances%20Mayes'%20first%20four%20years%20in%20Italy.%20At%20its%20heart%20is%20the%20villa%20Bramasole%20that%20she%20and%20her%20partner,%20Ed%20purchase.%20Though%20it%20is%20completely%20run%20down%20from%20years%20of%20neglect,%20they%20dream%20of%20turning%20it%20into%20their%20home.%20With%20both%20of%20them%20working%20full-time%20in%20San%20Francisco,%20the%20going%20is%20very%20tough.%20Amid%20trips%20back%20and%20forth%20every%20summer%20and%20winter,%20they%20have%20to%20wade%20their%20way%20through%20a%20labyrinth%20of%20work:%20from%20negotiations%20with%20contractors,%20liaising%20with%20the%20workers%20through%20faxes%20and%20telephones%20to%20finally%20rolling%20up%20their%20sleeves%20to%20get%20the%20work%20done%20in%20time%20to%20host%20a%20friend's%20wedding,%20as%20a%20reader,%20you%20really%20do%20feel%20very%20impressed%20at%20their%20effort%20and%20commitment%20in%20restoring%20Bramasole's%20splendour.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHowever,%20after%20a%20point,%20reading%20about%20the%20work%20in%20progress%20(or%20the%20lack%20of%20progress)%20does%20get%20tedious.%20Fortunately,%20her%20memoirs%20do%20go%20beyond%20the%20villa%20renovation%20-%20as%20she%20travels%20into%20the%20area%20around%20Cortona,%20she%20paints%20a%20very%20beautiful%20and%20vivid%20picture%20of%20the%20region%20and%20delves%20into%20the%20history%20and%20culture%20of%20Tuscany.%20Sadly,%20her%20impressions%20of%20Italians%20and%20their%20life%20cling%20to%20the%20oft%20repeated%20cliches%20and%20while%20it%20is%20very%20interesting%20to%20read%20about%20the%20Etruscan%20civilisation,%20a%20different%20and%20scarcely%20known%20aspect%20of%20Italian%20history,%20after%20a%20point%20in%20time,%20the%20repeated%20references%20to%20the%20Etruscans%20made%20it%20seem%20like%20she%20was%20plain%20obsessed%20with%20them.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20started%20reading%20the%20book%20with%20a%20lot%20of%20enthusiasm%20because%20going%20to%20Tuscany%20has%20been%20on%20my%20wish%20list%20for%20long.%20However,%20towards%20the%20last%20third%20of%20the%20book,%20I%20found%20it%20quite%20laborious%20to%20plod%20through%20the%20pages.%20And%20had%20it%20not%20been%20a%20book%20club%20read,%20I%20am%20certain%20I%20would%20have%20stopped%20reading%20it!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHer%20prose%20is%20beautiful,%20lyrical%20almost%20and%20her%20philosophical%20introspections%20are%20definitely%20thought%20provoking.%20My%20favourite%20parts%20of%20the%20book%20were%20where%20she%20takes%20the%20reader%20through%20the%20markets%20in%20Cortona,%20lined%20with%20freshly%20picked%20fruit%20and%20vegetables%20and%20when%20she%20dips%20bread%20into%20a%20bowl%20olive%20oil%20extracted%20from%20olive%20plucked%20out%20of%20their%20land.%20The%20bounty%20of%20the%20land%20and%20the%20sheer%20labour%20it%20takes%20to%20put%20something%20on%20the%20table%20really%20shine%20through%20in%20these%20parts%20of%20the%20book.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhich%20brings%20me%20to%20the%20food:%20plenty%20and%20more%20of%20it,%20till%20you%20would%20almost%20get%20indigestion%20and%20heartburn%20just%20from%20reading!%20The%20recipes,%20earthy%20and%20simple%20to%20make,%20are%20divided%20into%20summer%20and%20winter%20in%20keeping%20with%20the%20seasonality%20of%20ingredients.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPoaching%20pears%20in%20red%20wine%20is%20something%20I%20have%20been%20wanting%20to%20do%20for%20a%20long%20time.%20I%20didn't%20use%20the%20recipe%20in%20the%20book%20as%20I%20didn't%20quite%20fancy%20the%20idea%20of%20using%20currants%20with%20the%20pears.%20Instead%20I%20picked%20up%20a%20few%20ideas%20from%20a%20couple%20of%20websites%20to%20come%20up%20with%20this%20method.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20red%20wine%20poached%20pears%20look%20stunning%20and%20are%20ridiculously%20easy%20to%20make.%20Make%20these%20a%20day%20or%20two%20ahead%20of%20time,%20so%20that%20the%20pears%20can%20absorb%20all%20the%20flavours%20from%20the%20spices;%20also%20the%20colour%20intensifies%20with%20time.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(*for%20those%20who%20don't%20use%20alcohol,%20substitute%20the%20wine%20with%20grape%20juice%20and%20cranberry%20juice%20in%20the%20ratio%20of%202:1%20and%20add%20a%20couple%20of%20tbsps%20of%20balsamic%20vinegar%20when%20making%20the%20syrup).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMethod:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPut%20the%20red%20wine,%20sugar%20and%20all%20the%20spices%20into%20a%20saucepan%20and%20bring%20to%20a%20boil.%20Simmer%20till%20the%20sugar%20dissolves.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMeanwhile,%20peel%20the%20pears,%20cut%20off%20a%20small%20disc%20from%20the%20bottom%20so%20that%20the%20pears%20can%20stand%20upright.%20Do%20leave%20the%20stalks%20on.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20the%20pears%20upright%20into%20the%20wine;%20they%20should%20be%20completely%20submerged%20into%20the%20wine.%20Simmer%20for%20a%20further%2020-30%20minutes%20or%20until%20they%
