.%20If%20I%20thought%20that%20there%20would%20be%20very%20little%20room%20for%20this%20blog,%20any%20of%20the%20other%20blogs%20I%20read%20or%20even%20the%208%20shelves%20of%20cookbooks%20that%20tower%20over%20each%20end%20of%20the%20desk%20where%20I%20peck%20away%20at%20this%20keyboard.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20are%20exceptions%20however.%20Too%20many%20to%20go%20into.%20Baking%20is%20often%20an%20exception.%20I%20usually%20follow%20pastry%20recipes%20or%20make%20only%20small%20(logical??)%20adaptations%20to%20them.%20I%20can't%20make%20good%20ice%20cream%20to%20save%20my%20life,%20unless%20I%20follow%20a%20recipe%20word%20for%20word%20and%20then%20make%20it%20twice.%20I%20blame%20that%20strict%20bugaboo%20known%20as%20science.%20It's%20always%20lurking%E2%80%93%20just%20hoping%20I%20lose%20the%20logarithm%20or%20invert%20the%20integers.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20cocktails%20can%20be%20an%20exception%20too.%20I%20often%20turn%20to%20my%20bartenders%20guide%20IRL%20even%20when%20making%20something%20as%20simple%20and%20familiar%20as%20a%20Manhattan.%20And%20I'm%20not%20sure%20why.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBaking,%20sure%E2%80%93%20that's%20science.%20But%20mixology.%20That's%20more%20like%20alchemy.%20There%20is%20plenty%20of%20room%20for%20magic%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20mixing%20a%20cocktail.%20I%20don't%20want%20to%20brag,%20but%20magic%20has%20always%20been%20one%20of%20my%20specialties.%20How%20do%20you%20think%20I%20made%20it%20through%207th%20grade%20without%20getting%20pulverized.%20Magic!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20why%20do%20I%20continuously%20turn%20to%20the%20%22old%20school%22%20classic%20recipes?%20Why%20do%20I%20trust%20the%20tried%20and%20true,%20instead%20of%20the%20magic%20in%20my%20wand?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWell%20partly%20because%20people%20have%20definite%20expectations%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20a%20good%20cocktail.%20They%20say.%20%22Make%20me%20an%20Old-Fashioned%22%20and%20you%20realize%20they%20have%20a%20preconceived%20notion%20of%20what%20that%20cocktail%20is%20gonna%20look%20and%20taste%20like.%20I%20may%20be%20magic,%20but%20I%20am%20still%20enough%20of%20a%20nerd%20to%20fear%20a%20disappointed%20frown%20from%20one%20of%20my%20drunkard%20friends.%20So,%20rather%20than%20push%20myself%20or%20pour%20something%20risky%20I%20find%20myself%20turning%20to%20page%20363%20in%20my%20Ultimate%20Bar%20Book%20by%20Mittie%20Hellmich%E2%80%93%20muddler%20in%20hand.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20dammit.%20I'm%20magic.%20I%20should%20be%20conjuring%20my%20own%20enchanted%20potions.%20Right?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20I%20am%20starting%20this%20New%20Year%20out%20with%20a%20promise.%20I%20am%20going%20to%20concoct%20a%20few%20original%20cocktails%20this%20year,%20and%20spring%20them%20on%20you.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOf%20course%20original%20is%20a%20pretty%20loose%20term.%20Nothing%20comes%20from%20nothing,%20especially%20inspiration.%20So%20I'll%20let%20you%20in%20on%20the%20invocation%20method%20I%20follow%20when%20whipping%20up%20a%20magic%20potion.%20There%20are%20certain%20categories%20of%20drinks.%20I%20usually%20pick%20one%20and%20adjust%20the%20expectations%20in%20some%20manner.%20Take%20today's%20drink.%20I%20am%20calling%20it%20Port%20of%20Call%20(thanks%20Linda%20Bankit-Jacobs%20for%20the%20name).%20It's%20styled%20after%20a%20classic%20group%20of%20cocktails%20known%20as%20Daisies.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDaisies%20are%20a%20type%20of%20drink%20developed%20in%20America%20about%201850.%20Making%20it%20one%20of%20the%20earliest%20cocktail%20styles.%20At%20it's%20simplest%20a%20Daisy%20is%20a%20base%20spirit,%20augmented%20with%20fruit%20juice%20or%20grenadine.%20Sometimes%20splashed%20with%20seltzer.%20A%20whole%20lot%20of%20modern%20cocktails%20evolved%20from%20this%20simple%20concept,%20including%20an%20Old-Fashioned.%20So%20I%20figure%20there%20is%20room%20for%20one%20more.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20one%20is%20made%20with%20port%20which%20I%20fortified%20with%20some%20aged%20rum.%20Choose%20something%20on%20the%20darker%20side%20of%20gold.%20But%20not%20a%20full%20fledged%20dark%20rum.%20I%20like%20Diplomatico%20Reserva%20Exclusiva.%20Depth%20is%20added%20to%20this%20cocktail%20with%20plenty%20of%20lemon%20juice%20and%20the%20sour%20is%20balanced%20with%20sugar.%20I%20chose%20palm%20sugar%20for%20its%20dark,%20earthy%20sweetness,%20and%20the%20exotic%20allure%20I%20associated%20with%20all%20%22ports%20of%20call%22.%20But%20dark%20brown%20sugar%20and%20a%20drop%20of%20molasses%20could%20substitute%20as%20well.%20And%20since%20the%20magic%20of%20this%20drink%20is%20the%20fact%20that%20it%20is%20an%20updated%20Daisy,%20don't%20forget%20the%20grenadine.%20Not%20all%20grenadines%20are%20created%20equal,%20so%20spend%20a%20few%20bucks%20and%20get%20a%20good%20one.%20Better%20yet,%20make%20your%20own.%20GREG%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20inspiration%20for%20this%20cocktail%20comes%20from%20the%20Savoy%20hotel%20in%20London%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHalf%20fill%20a%20cocktail%20shaker%20with%20cracked%20ice.%20Add%20all%20the%20ingredients%20except%20the%20orange%20twist.%20Sake%20vi
