%20road-trip%20to%20Washington,%20D.C.%20to%20spend%20the%20Fourth%20in%20the%20nation's%20capitol.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20on%20the%20way,%20we%20visited%20friends%20and%20family.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFirst%20stop%20was%20Nashville,%20Tennessee%20to%20the%20home%20of%20my%20dear%20friend%20Heather%20Spriggs%20Thompson.%20%20Heather%20and%20her%20husband%20welcomed%20their%20first%20child,%20Emerson,%20into%20the%20world%20in%20April.%20%20As%20his%20mother%20and%20I%20have%20been%20friends%20and%20%22heart%20sisters%22%20since%201988,%20meeting%20Emerson%20was%20a%20special%20delight.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFrom%20Nashville,%20we%20headed%20east%20into%20the%20beautiful%20Smokey%20Mountains.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20love%20the%20rugged%20majesty%20of%20the%20Rocky%20Mountains%20and%20the%20unadulterated%20vastness%20of%20the%20West,%20but%20Western%20Tennessee/Eastern%20North%20Carolina%20magnetizes%20me.%20%20I%20want%20to%20fly%20over%20the%20Smokeys%20like%20a%20bird,%20soaring%20over%20the%20topography,%20landing%20in%20fern%20and%20moss-covered%20valleys%20and%20ravines,%20sipping%20from%20the%20springs%20and%20waterfalls%20pouring%20out%20the%20side%20of%20mountains.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGatlinburg,%20TN%20is%20nestled%20in%20a%20little%20valley%20near%20a%20large%20theme%20park%20you%20may%20have%20heard%20of:%20%20Dollywood.%20%20We%20took%20the%20boys%20not%20to%20Dollywood%20but%20to%20a%20kiddie-sized%20amusement%20park%20where%20Matthew,%20who%20is%20just%2039%20inches%20tall,%20could%20ride%20almost%20everything.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThat%20made%20him%20extremely%20happy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI'd%20like%20to%20know%20where%20I%20can%20purchase%20one%20of%20these%20for%20use%20at%20home.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChris%20and%20I%20were%20actually%20able%20to%20have%20a%20conversation%20while%20the%20boys%20were%20locked%20away%20in%20the%20ferris%20wheel%20basket.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20leaving%20Gatlinburg,%20we%20continued%20east%20into%20North%20Carolina%20and%20the%20Pigsah%20National%20Forest.%20%20I%20nearly%20had%20to%20do%20the%20Sound%20of%20Music%20twirling%20spin%20at%20a%20roadside%20overlook;%20such%20incredible%20beauty%20surrounded%20us.%20%20(Of%20course,%20the%20camera%20was%20missing%20during%20this%20time...)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20next%20phase%20of%20our%20family%20adventure%20was%20backpacking.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20took%20off%20my%20cute%20chandelier%20earrings%20and%20wedge%20sandals%20and%20exchanged%20them%20for%20a%20do-rag%20and%20hiking%20boots.%20%20We%20slid%20on%20our%20backpacks%20(mine%20was%20about%2020%20pounds,%20Chris'%20was%20about%2025),%20and%20hiked%20in%20just%20over%201.5%20miles.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20boys%20did%20great.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMatthew,%20like%20most%203-year-olds,%20is%20a%20pokey%20little%20puppy%20when%20we%20walk%20anywhere%20together.%20%20This%20was%20also%20the%20case%20on%20the%20trail.%20%20Except%20we%20discovered%20that%20he%20has%20a%20%22power%20boost%22%20button:%20%20when%20we%20would%20say,%20%22Matthew:%20%20SPEED%20WALK%22,%20off%20he'd%20go!%20%20This%20little%20guy%20can%20crank%20those%20baby%20legs,%20matching%202-3%20of%20his%20steps%20with%20one%20of%20ours.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDo%20you%20know%20much%20about%20backpacking?%20%20It's%20camping,%20yes,%20but%20instead%20of%20the%20family%20car%20transporting%20all%20of%20the%20needed%20gear,%20you%20put%20everything%20you%20may%20possibly%20need%20on%20your%20back%20and%20then%20you%20hike%20to%20your%20primitive%20campsite%20(no%20water,%20no%20electricity).%20%20The%20lighter%20your%20pack,%20the%20more%20enjoyable%20the%20experience%20is.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20husband%20is%20a%20devout%20backpacker.%20%20He%20uses%20a%20scale%20as%20he%20packs,%20getting%20down%20to%20the%20ounces%20of%20every%20item.%20%20Toothbrush%20handles%20are%20sawed%20off%20to%20save%20a%20few%20grams.%20%20Holes%20are%20drilled%20into%20spoon%20handles%20for%20the%20same%20reason.%20%20He's%20got%20back-country%20comfort%20down%20to%20a%20science.%20%20We%20stay%20clean%20and%20well-fed,%20but%20we%20do%20it%20lightly.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOur%20home%20away%20from%20home...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20the%20second%20time%20we've%20taken%20the%20boys%20backpacking.%20%20It%20sure%20is%20sweet%20to%20wake%20up%20between%20my%20babies,%20listening%20to%20the%20wind%20whisper%20through%20the%20Balsam%20firs%20and%20the%20peaceful%20rhythm%20of%20the%20kids'%20breathing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20hiked%20back%20to%20the%20car%20in%20the%20morning.%20Timothy%20tripped%20on%20a%20tree%20root%20and%20sustained%20injury%20%231%20of%20the%20trip:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETimothy%20has%20many%20wonderful%20characteristics,%20but%20being%20tough%20is%20not%20yet%20one%20of%20them.%20%20The%20boy%20inherited%20his%20mama's%20wooziness%20where%20any%20blood%20is%20involved.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPoor%20kid.%20%20Not%20a%20great%20start%20to%20your%206th%20birthday!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20piled%20back%20in%20the%20car%20and%20drove%20on%20the%20beautiful%20but%20curvy%20Blue%20Ridge%20Parkway.%20%20Matthew%20gave%20us%20a%202-second%20warning%20before%20he%20got%20carsick%20all%20over%20himself%20and%20the%20buckles%20of%20his%20carseat.%20%20Timothy%20dry-heaved%20at%20the%20sight%20of%20his%20brother's%20vomit.%20%20I%20had%20the%20privilege%20of%20cleaning%20the%20mess%20up%20with%20wet-wipes.%20It%20was%20a%20super%20way%20to%20start%20the%20day.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20we%20gathered%20our%20courage%20and%20drove%20on%20to%20the%20spot%20where%20we'd%20spend%20a%20second%20night%20backpacking.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20Timothy's%20reaction%20to%20our%20announcement%20that%20I%20had%20indeed%20%22packed-in%22%20a%20birthday%20present%20for%20him.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(He%20never%20even%20noticed%20the%20Christmas%20wrapping%20paper.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20us%20the%20following%20morning,%20after%20we%20had%20hiked%20back%20to%20the%20car,%20stopped%20at%20a%20campground,%20paid%20$10%20to%20take%20a%20shower,%20shopped%20at%20Target,%20and%20consumed%20a%20giant%20cup%20of%20Starbucks%20coffee.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAn%20injection%20of%20urban%20comforts%20does%20a%20girl%20good.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENext%20stop:%20%20Rougemont,%20North%20Carolina%20and%20the%20organic%20farm%20of%20the%20parents%20of%20my%20dearest%20childhood%20friend.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20properly%20celebrated%20Timothy's%20birthday%20there.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBecause%20we%20always%20use%20the%20long-handled%20Bic%20lighters%20to%20ignite%20candles%20and%20fireplaces,%20Timothy%20was%20a%20little%20shocked%20at%20the%20initial%20flammability%20of%20a%20real%20match.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20loved%20living%20the%20%22farm%20life%22%20for%203%20days.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMatthew%20eating%20a%20green%20bean%20plucked%20straight%20from%20the%20garden.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnyone%20need%20a%20caterpillar?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20the%20most%20amazing%20opportunity%20to%20meet%20Baby%20Tavner,%20my%20lifelong%20friend's%20first%20child:%20%20he%20was%20born%20on%20Timothy's%20birthday.%20%20Another%20incredibly%20special%20moment%20for%20me.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFrom%20North%20Carolina,%20we%20made%20our%20way%20north%20to%20Washington,%20DC.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(And%20we%20were%20more%20than%20a%20little%20exhausted...)%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
