,%20as%20it's%20called%20in%20S%20LA%20is%20also%20fair%20game%20for%20Lent%20(get%20it?%20game...it's%20a%20type%20of%20water%20fowl).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThat's%20right...special%20dispensation%20(aka%20%22a%20cheat%22)%20was%20given%20so%20that%20poule%20d'eau%20could%20be%20consumed%20during%20Lent.%20%20The%20reasoning%20was%20that%20their%20diets%20are%20more%20fish%20like%20than%20fowl.%20%20They're%20strange%20birds%20no%20matter%20what.%20%20But%20I'm%20off%20track%20as%20usual.%20%20Supposed%20to%20be%20talking%20about%20shrimp%20today.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAround%20here,%20in%20Cajun%20country,%20people%20tend%20to%20want%20crawfish%20during%20Lent.%20%20The%20two%20seasons%20occur%20at%20the%20same%20time.%20%20Yeah,%20yeah...I'm%20gettin'%20to%20the%20shrimp.%20%20Promise.%20%20This%20year,%20crawfish%20are%20hiding.%20%20Really,%20they%20are.%20%20We've%20had%20some%20mighty%20cold%20weather,%20even%20snowed%20twice.%20%20And%20recently%20there%20was%20ice%20a%20good%20inch%20thick%20on%20the%20crawfish%20ponds%20(I%20stopped%20off%20on%20the%20side%20of%20the%20road%20and%20saw%20it%20for%20myself).%20%20This%20means%20that%20crawfish%20burrow%20underground%20(why%20they're%20called%20mudbugs).%20%20This%20means%20traps%20have%20been%20pretty%20bare%20and%20prices%20high.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20not%20to%20worry...remember%20I%20said%20shrimp%20count%20too.%20%20I%20ate%20more%20shrimp%20growing%20up%20in%20New%20Orleans%20than%20crawfish%20anyway.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EToday%20I%20have%20a%20shrimp%20dish%20that%20my%20whole%20family%20loves.%20%20When%20I%20last%20made%20it,%20The%20Boy%20(also%20known%20as%20Yob%20for%20any%20Looney%20Tunes%20fans--spell%20it%20backwards)...anyway%20I%20was%20saying%20that%20The%20Boy%20came%20inside%20from%20playing%20with%20the%20dog%20and%20shrieked,%20shrieked,%20%22Shrimp%20&%20Bread!%20%20Oh%20Boy!%22%20%20I%20loved%20that%20he%20could%20identify%20what%20we%20were%20having%20that%20night%20just%20by%20smell%20alone.%20%20I%20was%20proud%20even.%20%20But%20that's%20not%20what%20the%20dish%20is%20really%20called--would%20be%20a%20pretty%20dull%20title,%20don't%20ya%20think?%20%20It's%20Italian%20Shrimp%20(don't%20know%20why%20it's%20called%20that%20either)%20and%20I%20got%20the%20recipe%20from%20a%20recipe%20swap%20group%20I%20belong%20to%20on%20Babycenter.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20reminds%20me%20of%20BBQ%20shrimp.%20%20BBQ%20shrimp%20has%20nothing%20at%20all%20to%20do%20with%20grilling%20or%20BBQ%20sauce.%20%20Speaking%20of%20titles,%20it's%20a%20strangely%20named%20dish.%20%20But%20it's%20a%20New%20Orleans%20staple.%20%20Mom%20used%20to%20make%20this%20often.%20%20But%20then%20evil%20such%20as%20%22high%20cholesterol%22%20and%20%22trans%20fats%22%20and%20%22LDL%22%20came%20barging%20in%20and%20she%20didn't%20make%20it%20so%20much%20anymore.%20%20I%20plan%20on%20making%20BBQ%20shrimp%20and%20posting%20about%20it%20soon%20(be%20patient!),%20but%20here's%20a%20glimpse:%20it%20involves%20about%201%20full%20stick%20of%20butter%20for%20every%20pound%20of%20shrimp.%20%20Gasp!%20%20Faint!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EItalian%20Shrimp,%20however,%20is%20not%20so%20unhealthy.%20%20I%20found%20it%20to%20be%20a%20pretty%20good%20sub%20for%20BBQ%20shrimp%20actually.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOther%20reasons%20to%20like%20it:%20it's%20easy%20and%20quick%20to%20make.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20here's%20the%20downside.%20%20It's%20messy,%20just%20like%20BBQ%20Shrimp.%20%20The%20shrimp%20are%20cooked%20shell-on%20in%20a%20flavorful%20sauce/broth.%20%20So%20when%20you%20eat%20them,%20you%20peel%20them--all%20dripping%20with%20cooking%20liquids%20and%20herbs%20and%20garlic--at%20the%20table.%20%20Juice%20runs%20down%20your%20arms,%20your%20glass%20gets%20shrimpy%20each%20time%20you%20take%20a%20drink,%20you%20come%20away%20needing%20a%20hose-down.%20%20I%20don't%20cook%20this%20for%20company.%20%20It's%20too%20embarrassing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMise%20en%20place%20for%20Italian%20Shrimp:%20olive%20oil,%20white%20wine,%20Worcestershire%20sauce,%20pepper,%20salt,%20red%20pepper%20flakes,%20bay%20leaves,%20garlic%20(roasted%20or%20not),%20oregano,%20rosemary,%20shell-on%20shrimp.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20would%20be%20even%20better%20with%20head-on%20shrimp.%20%20There's%20fat%20in%20the%20heads%20that%20give%20off%20great%20flavor.%20%20But%20the%20decapitated%20shrimp%20were%20on%20sale%20and%20I%20can't%20pass%20up%20a%20deal.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you're%20tempted%20to%20make%20this%20with%20peeled%20shrimp...well,%20I%20wouldn't%20advise%20it.%20%20Yes,%20it%20would%20be%20less%20messy%20to%20eat,%20but%20the%20shells%20provide%20much%20of%20the%20flavor%20to%20the%20dish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20everything%20to%20a%20pot.%20%20Really,%20it's%20that%20simple.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBring%20to%20a%20simmer%20and%20cook%20for%20about%2015%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20note%20about%20the%20garlic:%20we%20like%20it%20roasted%20first.%20%20That's%20an%20extra%20step%20and%20the%20dish%20is%20still%20very%20good%20without%20roasting.%20%20But%20if%20you%20like%20roasted%20garlic,%20do%20this...even%20ahead%20of%20time.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServe%20in%20bowls.%20%20With%20crusty%20bread.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20MUST%20serve%20with%20crusty%20bread.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20you%20MUST%20dip%20that%20bread%20in%20the%20juices.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20also%20recommend%20having%20a%20bowl%20out%20on%20the%20table%20to%20collect%20the%20shells.%20%20I%20mean,%20we%20may%20be%20sitting%20there%20covered%20in%20shrimpy%20juices,%20but%20we%20aren't%20barbarians.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere's%20my%20version%20of%20the%20recipe.%20%20I%20add%20Worcestershire%20sauce%20to%20give%20a%20hint%20of%20the%20BBQ%20shrimp%20I%20remember%20eating.%20%20I've%20also%20added%20more%20wine%20than%20the%20original%20and%20only%20cook%201%20pound%20of%20shrimp%20because%20I%20don't%20see%20this%20being%20good%20leftover.%20%20Maybe%20it%20is...I%20don't%20know.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlso,%20I%20think%20some%20lemon%20wedges%20would%20be%20good%20added%20to%20the%20pot.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EItalian%20Shrimp%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ethe%20Ms.%20enPlace%20version%20of%20a%20recipe%20by%20Pallavi%20(Eshu_me)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20all%20ingredients%20in%20a%20large%20pot%20and%20cook%20over%20medium%20heat%20for%20about%2015%20minutes,%20or%20until%20shrimp%20are%20pink%20and%20liquid%20reduced%20a%20bit.%20%20Do%20not%20over%20cook%20or%20the%20shrimp%20will%20be%20tough%20and%20hard%20to%20peel.%20%20Stir%20occasionally%20while%20cooking.%20Serve%20the%20shrimp%20hot%20with%20pan%20juices%20and%20use%20French%20bread%20for%20dipping.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
