,%20tomatoes%20and%20fresh%20scallions,%20it's%20my%20neighbor,%20Capt.%20Greg,%20who%20brings%20these%20beautifully%20plump%20and%20brilliantly%20purple%20plums%20that%20we%20simply%20can't%20get%20our%20fill%20of%20(you%20may%20remember%20Catp.%20Greg's%20Plum%20Perfect%20Gelato).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20about%20two%20weeks%20in%20mid-July%20our%20neighborhood%20is%20filled%20with%20more%20plums%20than%20we%20know%20what%20to%20do%20with%20and%20everyone%20fervently%20works%20on%20inventive%20recipes%20incorporating%20the%20fruits.%20%20I've%20seen%20tarts,%20breads,%20stewed%20plums%20for%20ice%20cream,%20salad%20dressings%20and%20even%20a%20plum%20chicken%20marinade.%20%20My%20use,%20Plum%20Jam,%20may%20not%20be%20the%20most%20inventive,%20but%20I've%20been%20loving%20it%20for%20weeks%20in%20the%20early%20afternoons%20on%20almond%20butter%20sandwiches%20or%20stirred%20into%20Greek%20yogurt%20with%20granola.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOur%20Plum%20Jam%20is%20on%20the%20tart%20side,%20just%20like%20I%20like%20it,%20and%20uses%20no%20pectin%20and%20lower%20sugar%20than%20other%20versions%20to%20let%20the%20fruit%20itself%20shine%20through.%20%20Used%20on%20a%20sweet%20breakfast%20scone,%20on%20top%20of%20that%20almond%20butter%20sandwich%20or%20as%20a%20swirl%20into%20creamy%20vanilla%20ice%20cream,%20Plum%20Jam%20is%20a%20treat%20in%20its%20own%20right.%20%20Next%20season%20can't%20come%20fast%20enough.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlum%20Jam%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETart%20and%20bursting%20with%20the%20flavors%20of%20summer,%20this%20jam%20makes%20my%20heart%20sing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECut%20washed%20plums%20in%20half%20and%20remove%20pits.%20%20Further%20cut%20plum%20halves%20in%20half%20and%20place%20in%20a%20large%20bowl.%20%20Add%20the%20sugar%20and%20lemon%20juice%20and%20mix%20well.%20%20Set%20aside%20for%20about%20an%20hour,%20stirring%20once.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20a%20small%20plate%20in%20the%20freezer%20(for%20later%20-%20to%20test%20if%20jam%20is%20ready%20to%20be%20jarred).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPour%20the%20plum%20and%20sugar%20mixture%20into%20a%20large%20non-reactive%20pot%20and%20place%20over%20medium-high%20heat%20on%20the%20stove.%20%20Bring%20to%20a%20simmer.%20%20Reduce%20heat%20to%20a%20medium-low/medium%20heat%20and%20simmer%20for%20about%20an%20hour%20or%20until%20the%20mixture%20becomes%20dark%20and%20thickened.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20jam%20appears%20thickened,%20remove%20the%20plate%20from%20the%20freezer%20and%20place%20a%20small%20dollop%20of%20jam%20in%20the%20center.%20%20Return%20the%20plate%20to%20the%20freezer%20for%20about%202%20minutes%20then%20remove%20again.%20%20Touch%20the%20edge%20of%20the%20jam%20with%20your%20finger,%20it%20should%20wrinkle%20up%20a%20bit%20and%20feel%20thick.%20%20If%20it's%20still%20runny,%20then%20it%20is%20not%20ready%20and%20you%20should%20continue%20simmering%20for%20another%205%20-%2010%20minutes.%20%20Repeat%20test%20until%20jam%20is%20thickened%20to%20desired%20consistency.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPour%20jam%20into%20clean%20containers%20and%20allow%20to%20cool%20on%20the%20counter.%20%20Cover%20and%20refrigerate%20for%20up%20to%204%20weeks.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELiv%20Life%20Note:%20%20I%20am%20not%20an%20expert%20on%20canning%20as%20my%20one%20attempt%20did%20not%20turn%20out%20well.%20%20Follow%20the%20directions%20of%20a%20proven%20canning%20site%20for%20proper%20canning%20procedures.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
