Thanksgiving is all about tradition. From the turkey to the cranberries, the menu for the holiday is usually as set in stone as you can get. Every year, though, I like to try to change up (at least) one little thing about my Thanksgiving dinner. And although people are often skeptical, me changing things up a bit has led to some new family favorites, that step in year after year as new traditions. This time around, I decided to try a new pumpkin pie recipe.

%20one%20little%20thing%20about%20my%20Thanksgiving%20dinner.%20And%20although%20people%20are%20often%20skeptical,%20me%20changing%20things%20up%20a%20bit%20has%20led%20to%20some%20new%20family%20favorites,%20that%20step%20in%20year%20after%20year%20as%20new%20traditions.%20This%20time%20around,%20I%20decided%20to%20try%20a%20new%20pumpkin%20pie%20recipe.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20know,%20I%20know.%20%20Pumpkin%20pie%20is%20right%20up%20there%20with%20turkey%20as%20THE%20food%20symbol%20of%20Thanksgiving.%20%20Why%20mess%20with%20a%20good%20thing,%20right?%20%20Well,%20it%20was%20totally%20worth%20it,%20and%20that%E2%80%99s%20why%20I%20messed%20with%20it!%20%20And,%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20mess%20with%20it%20too%20much.%20%20It%E2%80%99s%20still%20a%20fully%20recognizable%20pumpkin%20pie.%20%20No%20worries.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%E2%80%99m%20not%20the%20only%20one%20changing%20things%20up%20at%20the%20Thanksgiving%20table,%20McCormick%20has%20recently%20launched%20their%20American%20Homemade%20campaign,%20where%20you%20can%20find%20both%20traditions%20and%20twists%20on%20those%20traditional%20flavors%20we%20love,%20all%20in%20one%20place!%20%20This%20month,%20it%E2%80%99s%20all%20about%20Thanksgiving,%20and%20you%E2%80%99ll%20find%20everything%20from%20Apple%20Sage%20Turkey%20Gravy%20and%20Beer%20Brined%20Turkey,%20to%20Curried%20Green%20Beans.%20%20Curry%20at%20Thanksgiving?%20%20Why%20not?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20my%20Sour%20Cream%20Pumpkin%20Pie%20twist,%20I%20started%20by%20pre-baking%20my%20crust.%20%20I%20went%20ahead%20and%20used%20store-bought%20pie%20crust,%20to%20save%20time,%20but%20if%20you%20feel%20like%20making%20your%20own,%20go%20for%20it.%20%20I%20lined%20my%20crust%20with%20some%20parchment%20paper%20and%20filled%20it%20with%20dried%20beans%20to%20use%20as%20pie%20weights.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20the%20crust%20baked%20for%20about%2030%20minutes,%20I%20removed%20it%20from%20the%20oven%20and%20allowed%20it%20to%20cool.%20%20As%20it%20was%20cooling,%20I%20got%20going%20on%20my%20filling.%20%20The%20usual%20pumpkin%20pie%20suspects%20were%20added%20to%20the%20mix%E2%80%A6canned%20pumpkin,%20eggs,%20sugar,%20a%20dab%20of%20flour,%20and%20a%20decent%20dose%20of%20some%20holiday%20favorites,%20McCormick%20Cinnamon,%20Nutmeg,%20and%20Ginger,%20all%20of%20those%20warm,%20fall%20spices%20that%20sum%20up%20the%20perfect%20way%20to%20end%20a%20Thanksgiving%20meal.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInstead%20of%20the%20usual%20evaporated%20milk,%20though,%20I%20substituted%20some%20sour%20cream.%20%20My%20hope%20was%20that%20the%20sour%20cream%20would%20add%20a%20nice%20tang%20to%20it,%20and%20lighten%20up%20the%20consistency%20of%20the%20custard%20a%20bit.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20whisked%20together%20all%20of%20the%20ingredients%20and%20poured%20it%20into%20my%20baked%20pie%20crust.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAt%20that%20point,%20I%20popped%20it%20into%20the%20oven%20for%20forty-five%20minutes,%20just%20until%20it%20was%20set.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20pie%20needs%20to%20cool%20completely%20before%20slicing%20into%20it,%20so%20make%20sure%20you%20make%20it%20a%20few%20hours%20before%20dinner%20time,%20or%20even%20the%20day%20before.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20it%20was%20time%20to%20serve%20things%20up,%20I%20whipped%20up%20some%20whipped%20cream%20and%20sugar%20and%20then%20folded%20some%20more%20sour%20cream%20into%20the%20mix.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20end%20result%20was,%20indeed,%20delicious!%20%20After%20a%20big,%20filling,%20hearty%20dinner,%20a%20lighter%20than%20air%20pumpkin%20pie%20was%20exactly%20what%20we%20needed.%20%20I%20really%20enjoyed%20this%20twist,%20as%20it%20just%20changed%20it%20up%20enough,%20in%20all%20the%20right%20ways,%20but%20still%20left%20that%20amazing%20pumpkin%20pie%20flavor%20we%20wanted%20on%20Thanksgiving.%20%20It%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20cloyingly%20sweet,%20because%20of%20the%20tang%20of%20the%20sour%20cream%20in%20both%20the%20pie%20custard%20and%20the%20whipped%20cream%20on%20top.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESOUR%20CREAM%20PUMPKIN%20PIE%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESour%20Cream%20Pumpkin%20Pie%20-%20Cooking%20with%20McCormick%20%20%20Author:%20Adapted%20from%20Williams-Sonoma%20%20Recipe%20type:%20Pie%20%20Cuisine:%20Holiday%20%20%20Prep%20time:%20%2040%20mins%20%20Cook%20time:%20%201%20hour%2020%20mins%20%20Total%20time:%20%202%20hours%20%20%20Serves:%208%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPie%20crust%20for%20a%20one%20crust%20pie,%20homemade%20or%20store-bought%201%20(15%20oz.)%20can%20pumpkin%20puree%201%20cup%20sour%20cream%20%E2%85%94%20cup%20sugar%203%20large%20eggs,%20beaten%201%20Tbsp.%20all-purpose%20flour%201%20tsp.%20McCormick%20ground%20Cinnamon%20%C2%BD%20tsp.%20McCormick%20ground%20Nutmeg%20%C2%BD%20tsp.%20McCormick%20ground%20ginger%201%20cup%20heavy%20cream%202%20Tbsp.%20sugar%20%C2%BD%20cup%20sour%20cream%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoll%20the%20pastry%20dough%20into%20a%2013%20inch%20round.%20Transfer%20the%20dough%20to%20a%209-inch%20pie%20plate%20and%20press%20it%20gently%20into%20the%20pan.%20Trim%20the%20edges%20so%20there%20is%20some%20overhang,%20and%20crimp%20the%20edges.%20Freeze%20the%20pastry%20shell%20until%20firm,%20about%2015-20%20min.%20Meanwhile,%20preheat%20your%20oven%20to%20400*F,%20and%20position%20the%20oven%20rack%20in%20the%20lower%20third%20of%20the%20oven.%20Remove%20the%20pie%20plate%20from%20the%20freezer%20and%20line%20the%20pastry%20shell%20with%20parchment%20paper.%20Fill%20with%20dried%20beans%20or%20pie%20weights.%20Bake%20until%20the%20crust%20is%20set,%20about%2015%20minutes.%20Remove%20the%20beans/weights%20and%20paper.%20Continue%20baking%20until%20the%20crust%20is%20golden%20brown,%20about%2020%20minutes%20longer.%20Transfer%20to%20a%20wire%20rack%20and%20allow%20the%20crust%20to%20cool%20completely.%20Reduce%20the%20oven%20temperature%20to%20325*F.%20In%20a%20large%20bowl,%20combine%20the%20pumpkin,%20sour%20cream,%20sugar,%20eggs,%20flour,%20cinnamon,%20nutmeg,%20and%20ginger.%20Whisk%20the%20mixture%20until%20it's%20smooth.%20Pour%20the%20pumpkin%20filling%20into%20the%20baked%20pie%20dish.%20Bake%20until%20the%20filling%20is%20just%20set,%20about%2045%20minutes.%20If%20the%20crust%20starts%20to%20brown%20too%20much,%20cover%20the%20edges%20with%20aluminum%20foil.%20Transfer%20to%20a%20wire%20rack%20when%20baked,%20to%20cool%20completely.%20To%20make%20the%20topping:%20In%20a%20chilled%20bowl,%20beat%20the%20cream%20and%20sugar%20together%20with%20an%20electric%20mixer%20until%20stiff%20peaks%20form.%20Fold%20in%20the%20sour%20cream%20with%20a%20rubber%20spatula.%20Serve%20the%20whipped%20cream%20with%20the%20sliced%20pie%20and%20sprinkle%20with%20cinnamon%20sugar,%20if%20desired.%20%203.2.2807%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
