Receta Southern Sourdough
I Started making this bread after Christmas, just before Christmas we had a big snow storm and my kind neighbor brought us some of his delicious sourdough bread, I asked him for the recipe and he kindly brought over the recipe and all the ingredients to make it.
This recipe is fairly easy and it makes 4 loaves of sourdough, its a mild tasting and soft bread and because it makes so much its fun to give loaves to teachers, co workers, friends and neighbors. It's also fun for kids to make. On the weeks, I don't want to make bread I simply feed the starter, mine must be about 5 months old now.
Starter
- 1 packet of yeast
- 1 cup of warm water
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 3 tablespoons of instant potato
- cover loosely and place in refrigerator and feed every 3-5 days (I am feeding mine weekly and its doing just fine)
- Feeding
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 3 tablespoon of instant potatoes
- 1 cup of warm water
- leave out all day.
- Making the Dough
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 1/2 cup of oil
- 1 1/2 cups of warm water
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 cup of starter (return the rest to the refrigerator)
- 6 cups of bread flour, I sometimes need a little more to make a non sticky dough.
- mix ingredients and knead, I feed the starter in the morning, then make the dough at night and allow it to rise overnight.
- Making the Bread.
- after the dough has risen overnight, I punch down and add to 4 small loaf pans and leave out to rise for a few hours to double in size.
- bake at 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes until lightly browned.
- A fun recipe with the same starter and similar steps is to make a Cinnamon Raisin version.
- 1/2 cup of brown sugar
- 1/2 a cup of oil
- 1 cup of the starter
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 1/2 cups raisins
- 1 cup chopped nuts
- 6 cups of flour
follow the same steps as before.
You can even make mini ones, and bake for less time.
