%20and%20my%20grandfather%E2%80%99s%20name%20was%20Joseph.%20It%E2%80%99s%20a%20tradition%20in%20Italy%20to%20celebrate%20St.%20Joseph%E2%80%99s%20feast%20day%20and%20I%20guess%20my%20grandma%20decided%20it%20was%20doubly%20important%20because%20of%20grandpa%E2%80%99s%20name.%20In%20fact,%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20remember%20her%20telling%20us%20we%20were%20celebrating%20the%20day%20because%20it%20was%20an%20Italian%20tradition%20but%20because%20it%20was%20grandpa%E2%80%99s%20saint%20name.%20(And%20I%20think%20that%E2%80%99s%20an%20Italian%20tradition%20as%20well,%20celebrating%20your%20patron%20saint%E2%80%99s%20feast%20day.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20distinctly%20remember%20her%20sitting%20in%20her%20kitchen%20with%20a%20statue%20of%20St.%20Joseph%20on%20the%20table.%20It%20was%20a%20small%20kitchen%20(with%20a%20pantry%20that%20always%20had%20things%20in%20it%20we%20weren%E2%80%99t%20allowed%20to%20eat%20at%20home).%20There%20were%20lots%20of%20grandchildren%20running%20around%20%E2%80%93%20in%20fact,%20it%20seemed%20that%20the%20house%20was%20filled%20with%20people.%20She%E2%80%99d%20sit%20there%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20small%20kitchen%20table%20with%20a%20griddle%20or%20fryer%20in%20front%20of%20her%20and%20she%E2%80%99d%20make%20some%20sort%20of%20fritters.%20In%20my%20memory,%20she%20sat%20there%20all%20night%20and%20everyone%20who%20stopped%20by%20would%20go%20to%20the%20kitchen%20%E2%80%93%20like%20some%20sort%20of%20pilgrimage%20%E2%80%93%20to%20see%20her%20and%20sample%20her%20fritters.%20We%20would%20line%20up%20to%20get%20them%20hot%20%E2%80%93%20she%E2%80%99d%20have%20to%20tell%20us%20to%20wait%20while%20she%20sprinkled%20powdered%20sugar%20on%20top.%20We%E2%80%99d%20grab%20one%20and%20then%20run%20off%20to%20continue%20whatever%20game%20we%20were%20playing%20but%20we%E2%80%99d%20be%20back%20for%20more%20before%20long.%20Those%20fritters%20would%20melt%20in%20our%20mouths.%20I%20always%20wondered%20why%20that%20was%20the%20only%20time%20of%20year%20she%20would%20make%20them.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20spent%20a%20few%20minutes%20this%20morning%20looking%20up%20St.%20Joseph%E2%80%99s%20day%20traditions%20and%20found%20that%20she%20must%20have%20been%20making%20zeppoles.%20This%20isn%E2%80%99t%20my%20weekly%20Tasty%20Thursday%20post%20and%20I%20doubt%20I%E2%80%99ll%20have%20time%20to%20make%20these%20today%20but%20I%E2%80%99m%20going%20to%20share%20the%20recipe%20I%20found%20that%20seems%20to%20be%20just%20like%20the%20ones%20I%20remember.%20Maybe%20I%E2%80%99ll%20make%20them%20this%20weekend%20when%20my%20brother%E2%80%99s%20kids%20are%20here%20and%20tell%20them%20all%20this%20story%20about%20their%20great-grandmother.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETraditional%20Zeppoles%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20dough:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPowdered%20sugar%20to%20sprinkle%20over%20the%20top.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESet%20the%20water%20and%20wine%20to%20heat,%20and%20when%20bubbles%20form%20on%20the%20bottom%20of%20the%20pot%20(it%E2%80%99s%20shouldn%E2%80%99t%20come%20to%20a%20full%20boil)%20add%20the%20flour%20in%20one%20fell%20swoop%20and%20stir%20constantly%20with%20a%20wooden%20spoon.%20When%20the%20dough%20comes%20out%20of%20the%20pot%20in%20a%20single%20piece%20remove%20it%20from%20the%20fire%20to%20a%20lightly%20oiled%20marble%20work%20surface%20and%20work%20it,%20pounding%20it%20with%20a%20rolling%20pin,%20for%20about%2010%20minutes%20so%20as%20to%20make%20it%20smooth.%20Roll%20the%20dough%20into%20snakes%20about%20as%20thick%20as%20your%20little%20finger,%20cut%20them%20into%208-inch%20(20%20cm)%20lengths,%20and%20pinch%20the%20ends%20together%20to%20make%20rings.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20the%20oil%20and%20fry%20the%20zeppole%20a%20few%20at%20a%20time,%20pricking%20them%20with%20a%20skewer%20as%20they%20fry,%20so%20the%20dough%20will%20bubble%20out%20and%20they%E2%80%99ll%20become%20crunchier%20and%20more%20golden.%20Drain%20them%20on%20paper%20towels%20and%20sprinkle%20them%20with%20powdered%20sugar.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20Loading...%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
