%20Shashthamangalam%20is%20a%20place%20in%20Trivandrum,%20Kerala%20and%20Vanaja%20aunty%20lives%20there%20with%20her%20husband.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHer%20daughter,%20our%20Sreeja%20ammayi%20is%20Manish's%20mom's%20brother's%20wife....Well,%20anyways%20Manish's%20family%20have%20been%20family%20friends%20with%20them%20for%20a%20very%20very%20long%20time%20and%20later%20became%20relatives%20and%20the%20friendship%20still%20stands%20strong.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20Manish%20and%20I%20got%20married%20we%20had%20gone%20to%20their%20home%20several%20times%20and%20every%20time%20we%20went%20there%20aunty%20was%20ready%20with%20Sukhiyan.%20I%20love%20these%20sweet%20lentil%20fritters%20but%20these%20are%20so%20rarely%20made%20in%20my%20home%20and%20even%20in%20local%20bakeries%20it's%20a%20rare%20find%20these%20days.%20So%20whenever%20she%20made%20them%20for%20us%20with%20a%20cup%20of%20sweet%20hot%20tea,%20I%20couldn't%20resist%20enjoying%20myself%20to%20a%20good%20bunch%20of%20these!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEven%20if%20we%20go%20there%20unannounced%20in%20the%20middle%20of%20the%20day,%20she'll%20make%20something%20quickly%20and%20would%20never%20let%20us%20leave%20without%20eating%20and%20Sukhiyan%20was%20almost%20always%20her%20go-to%20palaharam%20to%20make,%20I%20just%20love%20such%20people%20who%20attracts%20you%20with%20food%20;-)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEven%20though%20I%20really%20enjoyed%20eating%20them%20I%20never%20tried%20making%20them%20at%20home.%20When%20my%20sis-in-law,%20Malli%20came%20home%20for%20a%20vacation,%20she%20decided%20to%20make%20these.%20I%20was%20simply%20excited%20and%20went%20about%20clicking%20pics%20as%20she%20made%20them.%20So,%20these%20were%20technically%20made%20by%20her%20and%20they%20were%20super%20yumm!%20She%20even%20calls%20them%20Modakam,%20so%20apparently%20it%20has%20a%20lot%20of%20names%20:)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20have%20no%20clue%20of%20the%20origin%20of%20it's%20name%20but%20it%20is%20popularly%20called%20Sukhiyan%20or%20Suhiyan%20and%20it%20is%20a%20very%20simple%20and%20easy%20snack%20to%20make.%20Boiled%20green%20moong%20daal%20is%20mixed%20with%20melted%20jaggery%20that's%20flavored%20with%20a%20pinch%20of%20elaichi%20(cardamom%20powder),%20rolled%20into%20balls,%20dipped%20in%20batter%20and%20deep%20fried.%20I%20could%20just%20eat%20the%20rolled%20lentil%20balls%20as%20it%20is,%20but%20there's%20nothing%20like%20a%20crispy%20fritter%20:-)%20The%20batter%20is%20the%20same%20as%20the%20one%20used%20for%20Pazhampozhi%20(plantain%20fritters).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20ratio%20of%20Green%20moong%20dal%20to%20Jaggery%20is%20approx%202:1%20respectively.%20We%20don't%20measure%20it%20exactly%20but%20just%20add%20enough%20melted%20jaggery%20that'll%20help%20the%20cooked%20lentils%20stick%20together%20and%20form%20a%20ball%20easily.%20Some%20like%20to%20flavor%20the%20jaggery%20with%20cardamom%20powder,%20dried%20ginger%20powder,%20cinnamon%20etc...but%20I%20prefer%20it%20simply%20flavored%20with%20a%20little%20cardamom%20powder.%20A%20cup%20of%20hot%20sweet%20tea%20and%20a%20bowlful%20of%20these%20Sukhiyan...aaah!%20Let%20me%20daydream%20for%20a%20moment%20:)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESukhiyan,%20sweet%20lentil%20fritters%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%E2%80%99ll%20need%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Enor%20too%20thick.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.%20Mix%20the%20cooked%20green%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Emoong%20daal%20with%20the%20melted%20jaggery%20and%20mix%20together%20gently.%20While%20still%20warm%20%20start%20rolling%20them%20into%20equal%20sized%20balls%20.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E5.%20%20Heat%20oil%20for%20deep%20frying%20and%20once%20ready,%20dip%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eeach%20moong%20daal%20ball%20into%20the%20batter%20and%20immerse%20into%20hot%20oil.%20Fry%20until%20they%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eturn%20golden%20brown.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E6.%20Serve%20the%20Sukhiyan%20hot%20with%20a%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Enice%20cup%20of%20hot%20tea/coffee%20:)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHope%20you'll%20be%20tempted%20to%20try%20these%20someday.%20It's%20really%20good%20and%20despite%20the%20frying,%20I%20like%20to%20think%20I'm%20eating%20a%20protein%20rich%20snack%20;-)%20My%20little%20son%20too%20enjoyed%20these%20and%20I%20want%20to%20try%20making%20more%20naadan%20palaharam%20for%20him%20to%20show%20him%20the%20food%20his%20parents%20grew%20up%20eating%20and%20enjoying%20:-)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Manju%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
