%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20a%20big%20chunk%20of%20red%20bean%20paste%20left%20in%20the%20fridge%20because%20of%20mooncakes%20attempts%20last%20week.%20I%20thought%20if%20I%20don't%20think%20of%20something,%20they%20will%20end%20up%20in%20the%20trash.%20I%20don't%20want%20that%20to%20happen%20and%20decided%20to%20try%20my%20hands%20on%20these%20Chinese%20buns.%20I%20have%20always%20thought%20they%20are%20not%20easy%20to%20make%20until%20I%20saw%20what%20blogger%20Happy%20Home%20Baking%20did%20and%20the%20recipe%20seems%20easy.%20Of%20course%20the%20one%20important%20thing%20is%20the%20recipe%20did%20not%20call%20for%20shortening.%20I%20like%20that.%20Most%20of%20the%20other%20recipes%20I%20came%20across%20either%20called%20for%20shortening%20or%20long%20process%20of%20dough%20starter%20preparation.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20I%20went%20on%20to%20pick%20up%20a%20few%20essentials%20from%20NTUC.%20Hong%20Kong%20Pao%20Flour%20-%20checked!%20Sugar,%20instant%20yeast,%20baking%20powder%20-%20checked,%20checked,%20checked!%20And%20the%20star%20ingredient%20-%20red%20bean%20paste%20:%20Double%20Checked!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20must%20say%20I%20am%20very%20pleased%20with%20the%20results.%20Now,%20homemade%20paos%20made%20available%20at%20the%20snap%20of%20my%20fingers.%20The%20recipe%20works%20and%20I%20can%20just%20make%20any%20fillings%20for%20these%20Paos%20in%20future%20-%20peanut%20paos%20(my%20all%20time%20favourite).%20lotus%20paste%20and%20even%20savoury%20ones%20like%20chicken!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Recipe%20:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-%20Sieve%20the%20flour%20and%20baking%20powder%20into%20a%20stand%20mixer%20bowl.%20Add%20in%20instant%20yeast%20and%20sugar%20and%20give%20it%20a%20stir%20to%20mix%20it%20up.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-%20Using%20the%20dough%20hook,%20turn%20on%20mixer%20and%20add%20in%20water%20gradually.%20Once%20the%20dough%20come%20together,%20add%20in%20oil%20and%20continue%20to%20knead%20till%20smooth%20and%20elastic%20(%20dough%20does%20not%20tear%20easily%20when%20strectched).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-%20Transfer%20to%20a%20clean%20surface%20and%20shape%20to%20a%20round%20ball.%20Place%20in%20a%20clean%20bowl%20(slightly%20oiled)%20and%20cover%20with%20a%20damp%20cloth%20to%20proof.%20Takes%20about%20an%20hour.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-%20Meanwhile,%20prepare%20the%20lotus%20paste.%20I%20shaped%20them%20into%20equal%20balls%20of%20about%2020g.%20The%20dough%20can%20yield%20up%20to%2018%20buns.%20Next,%20cut%20out%20baking%20paper%20in%20squares%20(%20about%2018%20pieces)%20for%20the%20buns%20to%20place%20on%20when%20steaming.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-%20Once%20the%20dough%20is%20ready%20(%20by%20now%20it%20should%20have%20doubled%20in%20size),%20transfer%20to%20a%20clean%20surface%20and%20knead%20it%20slightly%20to%20release%20air.%20Shape%20it%20into%20a%20long%20log%20shape.%20Use%20a%20dough%20cutter%20and%20divide%20the%20log%20into%205%20equal%20parts.%20Then%20divide%20each%20part%20further%20to%20about%203-4%20equal%20parts%20depending%20how%20big%20portion%20the%20dough%20is.%20Some%20estimation%20is%20required%20here.%20Basically,%20the%20buns%20will%20expand%20when%20put%20in%20the%20steamer%20so%20you%20don't%20want%20to%20end%20up%20with%20a%20gigantic%20looking%20bun.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-%20Shape%20each%20parts%20into%20a%20round%20ball.%20Then,%20flatten%20the%20dough%20into%20a%20round%20shape%20and%20wrap%20the%20red%20bean%20filling%20in%20it.%20Close%20the%20dough%20up%20and%20pinch%20to%20seal.%20Place%20it%20on%20the%20prepared%20baking%20paper%20with%20seams%20facing%20down.%20Repeat%20till%20all%20the%20dough%20is%20used%20up.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-%20Next,%20leave%20to%20proof%20for%20a%20further%2020%20minutes.%20Cover%20loosely%20with%20cling%20wrap.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-%20Steam%20over%20medium%20high%20heat%20for%20about%2012%20minutes.%20Once%20ready,%20open%20the%20lid%20of%20the%20steamer%20slowly%20to%20avoid%20water%20from%20dripping%20back%20onto%20the%20buns.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-%20Serve%20warm.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20fun%20making%20these.%20Furthermore,%20everyone%20at%20home%20likes%20them.%20It's%20worth%20the%20time%20and%20definitely%20worth%20the%20effort%20when%20you%20see%20how%20they%20bring%20smiles%20to%20the%20folks%20at%20home.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
