%20that%20you%20learn%20in%20a%20family%20that%20size%20is%20to%20take%20what%20you%20want%20from%20the%20serving%20plate%20on%20the%20first%20time%20around%20the%20table,%20or%20you%20may%20not%20get%20it.%20Likewise,%20you%20have%20to%20figure%20out%20what%20to%20do%20about%20food%20you%20would%20rather%20NOT%20have%20on%20your%20plate.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20family%20dinner%20table%20had%20a%20secret%20hiding%20place.%20I%20imagine%20it%20as%20some%20kind%20of%20support%20for%20the%20table%20legs.%20My%20dad%20calls%20it%20the%20%22asparagus%20shelf%22,%20because%20that%20is%20where%20all%20those%20nasty%20kinds%20of%20things%20ended%20up%20when%20Grandma%20and%20Grandpa%20weren't%20looking.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI,%20personally,%20adore%20asparagus,%20but%20I%20imagine%20that%20possibly%20they%20didn't%20practice%20the%20%22steaming%22%20method%20back%20then,%20so%20I%20suppose%20I%20can%20understand%20my%20dad's%20dismay%20when%20the%20wilted%20greens%20made%20an%20appearance%20at%20the%20dinner%20table.%20However,%20I%20can%20understand%20the%20sentiment.%20See,%20I%20have%20always%20felt%20that%20way%20about%20brussels%20sprouts.%20I%20have%20tried%20and%20tried,%20but%20I%20have%20never%20once%20been%20able%20to%20convince%20my%20taste%20buds%20that%20they%20are%20a%20special%20culinary%20treat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EApparently,%20I%20have%20just%20never%20had%20them%20prepared%20the%20right%20way.%20Ginny%20came%20out%20this%20past%20weekend%20while%20she%20was%20at%20a%20conference%20in%20St%20Louis,%20and%20brought%20with%20her%20a%20baggie%20of%20pretty%20little%20brussels%20sprouts%20she%20brought%20from%20her%20parents'%20house.%20She%20assures%20me%20that%20size%20does%20matter%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20brussels%20sprouts;%20and%20smaller%20is%20better.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20made%20this%20recipe%20that%20we%20found%20over%20at%20Evil%20Chef%20Mom,%20and%20to%20say%20the%20least,%20it%20was%20a%20revelation.%20Really,%20people,%20I%20would%20not%20lie%20about%20something%20so%20serious.%20Working%20diligently,%20Ginny%20trimmed%20and%20cored%20the%20little%20gems%20and%20then%20passed%20them%20to%20me%20to%20tease%20the%20little%20leaves%20apart.%20(The%20recipe%20says%20to%20slice%20them,%20but%20we%20went%20in%20a%20different%20direction.)%20After%20finishing%20the%20dish,%20and%20taking%20lovely%20pictures%20of%20it%20for%20all%20of%20you%20to%20see,%20we%20both%20grabbed%20a%20fork,%20and%20with%20a%20prayer%20of%20%22I%20really%20hope%20this%20is%20good%22,%20we%20dug%20in.%20Standing%20right%20there,%20over%20the%20stove.%20We%20stood.%20And%20devoured.%20If%20I%20could%20have%20fit%20one%20more%20shovel%20full%20down%20my%20gullet,%20I%20would%20have%20licked%20the%20bowl.%20This%20is%20all%20that%20was%20left%20after%20what%20shall%20henceforth%20be%20known%20as%20%22The%20Brussels%20Sprout%20Massacre%22.%20(you%20should%20know%20that%20this%20is%20NOT%20a%20small%20bowl.%20This%20is%20a%2012%22%20platter.%20And%20it%20is%20EMPTY.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20have%20been%20converted.%20As%20evidence%20to%20that%20point,%20we%20went%20to%20the%20greenhouse%20the%20next%20day%20and%20there%20are%20now%20four%20brussels%20sprouts%20plants%20residing%20in%20my%20garden.%20For%20once%20I%20can%20say%20that%20its%20alright%20that%20my%20husband%20would%20never%20eat%20this,%20because%20the%20next%20time%20I%20make%20it,%20I%20won't%20have%20to%20share%20it%20with%20anyone.%20And,%20oh%20yes,%20I%20will%20be%20making%20it%20again.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBrussels%20Sprout%20Hash%20With%20Caramelized%20Shallots%20and%20Bacon%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(Adapted%20from%20Bon%20Appetit%20November%202007)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20frying%20pan,%20cook%20bacon%20until%20crispy.%20Lay%20bacon%20on%20paper%20towels%20to%20drain%20fat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMelt%203%20tablespoons%20butter%20in%20medium%20skillet%20over%20medium%20heat.%20Add%20shallots;%20sprinkle%20with%20coarse%20kosher%20salt%20and%20pepper.%20Saute%20until%20soft%20and%20golden,%20about%2010%20minutes.%20Add%20vinegar%20and%20sugar.%20Stir%20until%20brown%20and%20glazed,%20about%203%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHalve%20brussels%20sprouts%20lengthwise.%20Cut%20lengthwise%20into%20thin%20(1/8-inch)%20slices.Heat%20oil%20in%20large%20skillet%20over%20medium-high%20heat.%20Add%20sprouts;%20sprinkle%20with%20salt%20and%20pepper.%20Saute%20until%20brown%20at%20edges,%206%20minutes.%20Add%201%20cup%20water%20and%203%20tablespoons%20butter.%20Saute%20until%20most%20of%20water%20evaporates%20and%20sprouts%20are%20tender%20but%20still%20bright%20green,%203%20minutes.%20Add%20shallots%20and%20bacon,%20season%20with%20salt%20and%20pepper.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMake%20it.%20Love%20it.%20Devour%20it.%20Then%20make%20it%20again.%20You%20know%20you%20want%20to....%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
