%20body;%20women,%20in%20contrast,%20have%20historically%20turned%20to%20the%20comparatively%20gentle,%20more%20hands-off%20method%20of%20poisoning.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EVictorian%20England,%20in%20fact,%20%20saw%20the%20rise%20of%20the%20woman%20poisoner%20as%20a%20cultural%20archetype.%20After%20all,%20poisons%20such%20as%20arsenic%20were%20easy%20to%20come%20by%20and%20forensic%20science%20was%20not%20yet%20adept%20at%20detecting%20such%20causes%20of%20death.%20To%20be%20fair,%20married%20women%20had%20little%20or%20no%20rights%20then,%20and%20poison%20often%20presented%20the%20only%20means%20out%20of%20an%20abusive%20marriage.%20I%20admit%20I%20have%20a%20something%20of%20a%20soft%20spot%20for%20women%20who%20poisoned%20out%20of%20self-preservation.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnna%20Marie%20Hahn,%20however,%20a%20German%20immigrant%20who%20poisoned%20and%20killed%20at%20least%20five%20men%20in%20America%20in%20the%201930s,%20did%20not%20act%20out%20of%20necessity%20or%20desperation.%20Her%20motives%20were%20simple:%20She%20wanted%20her%20victim's%20money.%20Posing%20as%20a%20nurse,%20Hahn%20befriended%20(and%20likely%20seduced)%20elderly%20German-American%20men,%20under%20the%20pretense%20of%20caring%20for%20them.%20She%20beguiled%20them%20into%20giving%20her%20money,%20and%20once%20she%20bled%20them%20dry%20-%20or%20was%20put%20in%20their%20will%20-%20she%20poisoned%20their%20food,%20often%20with%20arsenic%20or%20croton%20oil,%20%20and%20left%20them%20to%20die%20painful%20deaths.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20her%20arrest%20for%20the%20murder%20of%20George%20Opendorfer,%20she%20became%20a%20favorite%20of%20the%20press%20and%20was%20dubbed,%20variously,%20%22Arsenic%20Anna,%22%20or%20the%20%22Blonde%20Borgia.%22%20It%20took%20a%20Cinncinnati%20jury%20of%20mostly%20women%20a%20very%20short%20time%20to%20find%20her%20guilty,%20whereupon%20she%20was%20sentenced%20to%20death.%20On%20December%207,%201938%20she%20became%20the%20first%20woman%20in%20Ohio%20to%20die%20by%20electrocution.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20before%20her%20execution,%20she%20invited%20the%20press%20to%20her%20cell%20for%20interviews,%20and%20according%20to%20some%20accounts,%20she%20served%20them%20cake%20and%20punch.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20haven't%20found%20out%20whether%20any%20of%20the%20press%20were%20brave%20enough%20to%20actually%20eat%20a%20cake%20offered%20them%20by%20a%20serial%20poisoner,%20nor%20have%20I%20found%20what%20type%20of%20cake%20Hahn%20allegedly%20served.%20And%20so%20I%20have%20taken%20a%20bit%20of%20poetic%20license%20and%20made%20what%20I%20imagine%20she%20may%20have%20served,%20a%20chocolate%20cake%20with%20cherry%20liqueur%20and%20a%20rose-scented%20chocolate%20ganache.%20A%20%22Blood%20&%20Roses%22%20cake,%20if%20you%20will%20...%20If%20you'd%20like%20to%20make%20it,%20sans%20poison,%20of%20course,%20here%20is%20my%20recipe.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPoisoner's%20Cake%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20cake:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELine%20a%209%20inch%20cake%20pan%20with%20parchment%20paper%20and%20lightly%20dust%20with%20flour.%20%20In%20the%20bowl%20of%20a%20stand%20mixer%20with%20a%20paddle%20attachment,%20combine%20the%20dry%20cake%20ingredients.%20Add%20the%20other,%20wet,%20ingredients,%20except%20for%20the%20egg,%20and%20mix%20on%20low%20for%202%20minutes.%20Add%20the%20egg%20and%20mix%20for%20another%20minute,%20scraping%20down%20the%20sides%20as%20needed.%20Pour%20into%20the%20prepared%20cake%20pan%20and%20bake%20in%20a%20preheated%20375%20F%20oven%20for%2030%20minutes,%20or%20until%20a%20toothpick%20inserted%20into%20the%20center%20comes%20out%20clean.%20Cool%20in%20cake%20pan%20on%20a%20wire%20rack%20for%2010%20minutes,%20remove%20from%20pan,%20and%20allow%20to%20cool%20thoroughly.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20ganache,%20melt%20the%20chips%20in%20a%20metal%20bowl%20over%20a%20pot%20of%20boiling%20water.%20Whisk%20in%20the%20cream,%20add%20the%20corn%20syrup%20and%20rose%20water.%20Pour%20over%20the%20cooled%20cake%20and%20allow%20to%20set.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHahn%20maintained%20her%20innocence%20until%20the%20very%20end,%20though%20she%20wrote%20a%20full%20confession%20that%20was%20found%20after%20her%20death.%20Unlike%20the%20Dusseldorf%20Vampire,%20who%20took%20a%20morbid%20pleasure%20in%20the%20thought%20of%20his%20beheading,%20Hahn%20begged%20for%20her%20life.%20According%20to%20witnesses,%20as%20she%20was%20being%20led%20to%20the%20chair,%20she%20addressed%20the%20prison%20warden%20and%20screamed,%20%22Mr.%20Woodard!%20Don't%20let%20them%20do%20this%20to%20me!%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20Poisoner's%20Cake%20also%20happens%20to%20be%20my%20entry%20for%20this%20month's%20Creative%20Cooking%20Crew%20Challenge,%20%22Cooking%20with%20Spirits,%22%20hosted%20by%20Lazaro%20of%20Lazaro%20Cooks%20and%20Joan%20of%20Foodalogue.%20Visit%20Lazaro%20later%20this%20month%20for%20a%20full%20round%20up.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20the%20meantime,%20if%20you'd%20like%20to%20learn%20more%20about%20Anna%20Marie%20Hahn,%20check%20out%20The%20Good-Bye%20Door%20by%20Diana%20Britt%20Franklin.%3C/p%3E){kind=lin
