,%20awaiting%20an%20interisland%20flight%20that%20will%20take%20me%20to%20the%20Big%20Island%20to%20see%20family.%20So%20that's%20kind%20of%20exotic.%20Okay,%20not%20really.%20I%20just%20wanted%20the%20free%20wifi.%20But%20it%20did%20get%20me%20thinking%20about%20what%20makes%20for%20posts%20that%20readers%20connect%20to,%20and%20while%20exciting%20new%20restaurants,%20complex%20food%20preparation%20methods%20and%20unusual%20ingredients%20are%20all%20fantastic%20reads,%20don't%20discount%20the%20power%20of%20familiar%20comforts.%20And%20never%20question%20the%20Power%20of%20Pasta.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESeriously.%20Just%20post%20a%20giant%20plate%20of%20spaghetti%20and%20meatballs%20and%20people%20go%20nuts!%20And%20rightly%20so.%20It%20was%20the%20favorite%20childhood%20dish%20for%20many.%20It%20was%20my%20first%20introduction%20to%20Italian%20food,%20despite%20its%20highly%20Americanized%20lineage.%20I%20can't%20resist%20a%20plate%20of%20pasta%20and%20red%20sauce,%20it's%20my%20Kryptonite%20and%20I%20know%20I'm%20not%20alone,%20hence%20its%20blog-worthy%20draw.%20This%20baked%20ziti%20with%20spicy%20Italian%20sausage%20was%20like%20a%20grown-up%20version%20of%20spaghetti%20and%20meatballs.%20I%20was%20having%20a%20long%20week,%20lots%20of%20deadlines%20and%20not%20much%20time%20to%20fuss%20over%20meal%20prep,%20which%20is%20often%20the%20precursor%20to%20making%20a%20meal%20of%20pure%20comfort%20bliss.%20I%20fully%20believe%20there's%20a%20subconscious%20Comfort%20Food%20Gnome%20that%20lives%20in%20our%20brains;%20it%20ensures%20that%20we%20always%20have%20the%20base%20ingredients%20handy%20in%20our%20kitchens,%20at%20all%20times.%20At%20any%20given%20moment,%20I%20always%20have%20a%20box%20of%20pasta%20in%20the%20pantry,%20along%20with%20a%20can%20or%20two%20of%20crushed%20tomatoes.%20And%20garlic%20--%20there's%20always%20garlic.%20That%20Comfort%20Food%20Gnome%20in%20my%20brain%20makes%20sure%20these%20basics%20are%20never%20absent%20from%20our%20kitchen,%20so%20that%20a%20plate%20of%20pasta%20with%20a%20garlic-heavy%20red%20sauce%20is%20always%20at%20my%20fingertips.%20I'm%20sure%20everyone's%20Comfort%20Food%20Brain-Gnome%20makes%20sure%20there's%20crucial%20ingredients%20available%20in%20kitchens%20everywhere.%20We%20can%20credit%20this%20gnome%20for%20making%20sure%20our%20pantry%20is%20never%20without%20peanut%20butter%20and%20a%20clean%20spoon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20did%20have%20one%20bright,%20shiny%20ingredient%20I%20was%20excited%20to%20have,%20some%20fresh%20Italian%20sausage%20from%20Bill%20the%20Butcher.%20It%20was%20one%20of%20those%20impulse%20buys%20--%20I%20was%20picking%20up%20some%20other%20things%20for%20a%20recipe%20I%20was%20developing%20and%20I%20saw%20two%20lone%20Italian%20sausages%20sitting%20on%20the%20tray,%20like%20orphaned%20puppies,%20needing%20a%20home.%20Don't%20worry,%20I%20don't%20bake%20orphaned%20puppies%20in%20pasta%20with%20cheese,%20but%20these%20spiced%20links%20o'%20meat%20needed%20to%20be%20showcased%20in%20something%20simple%20but%20wonderful.%20I%20did%20a%20pan-sear%20on%20these%20puppies%20(har-har)%20to%20get%20some%20color,%20and%20then%20saut%C3%A9ed%20some%20chopped%20garlic%20in%20the%20pan%20with%20olive%20oil%20and%20threw%20in%20a%20big%20can%20of%20chopped%20tomatoes%20with%20some%20dried%20oregano%20and%20salt/pepper%20to%20taste%20--%20pretty%20basic.%20I%20had%20another%20pot%20of%20salted%20water%20boiling%20to%20cook%20the%20pasta,%20just%20below%20al%20dente,%20since%20I%20knew%20they%20would%20continue%20to%20cook%20in%20the%20oven.%20I%20sliced%20the%20seared%20sausages%20--%20they%20were%20still%20raw%20in%20the%20center,%20which%20was%20fine%20since%20the%20oven%20would%20finish%20them%20--%20and%20I%20tossed%20the%20slices%20with%20the%20pasta%20and%20the%20sauce%20before%20getting%20them%20into%20a%20baking%20dish.%20I%20put%20a%20healthy%20blanket%20of%20shaved%20Parmesan%20over%20everything%20and%20put%20it%20into%20a%20preheated%20oven.%20Comfort%20Meal%20Heaven.%20It%20made%20life%20worth%20living%20that%20week,%20let%20me%20tell%20you.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Comfort%20Food%20Gnome%20served%20me%20well,%20I%20had%20all%20the%20basics%20I%20needed,%20plus%20the%20bonus%20of%20some%20tasty%20Italian%20sausages%20to%20make%20what's%20probably%20one%20of%20the%20simplest%20but%20satisfying%20meals.%20Meat,%20cheese,%20noodles%20and%20sauce.%20It's%20literally%20the%20keys%20to%20the%20kingdom%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20food%20blogging,%20but%20only%20because%20it%20speaks%20to%20us%20in%20such%20universal%20ways.%20In%20all%20its%20ingredient%20permutations,%20we%20never%20fail%20to%20gravitate%20towards%20something%20so%20basic,%20and%20maybe%20that's%20the%20real%20key%20to%20a%20successful%20food%20blog,%20finding%20that%20universal%20flavor%20experience%20thread%20that%20weaves%20its%20way%20through%20so%20many%20lives.%20That,%20and%20the%20existence%20of%20the%20Comfort%20Food%20Gnome%20in%20your%20brain.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
