%20has%20been%20the%20perfect%20cup%20of%20(green)%20tea%20to%20start%202011%20for%20the%20Crispy%20Cook.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20book%20is%20the%20current%20book%20selection%20for%20Cook%20the%20Books,%20the%20bimonthly%20foodie%20book%20club%20and%20I%20have%20the%20privilege%20of%20hosting%20the%20book%20discussion%20and%20roundup%20for%20this%20round,%20which%20ends%20January%2028,%202011.%20We%20love%20to%20have%20new%20members%20join%20us%20in%20reading%20our%20selected%20book%20and%20then%20blogging%20and%20cooking%20up%20something%20inspired%20by%20our%20anointed%20book,%20so%20be%20sure%20to%20check%20the%20Cook%20the%20Books%20website%20for%20more%20details%20and%20to%20see%20the%20cool%20roundup%20of%20posts%20after%20our%20deadline.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20initially%20read%20this%20evocative%20book%20a%20couple%20of%20years%20ago%20for%20a%20Books%20About%20Food%20Reading%20Challenge,%20and%20here's%20my%20summary%20from%20that%20first%20reading:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%22Untangling%20my%20Chopsticks%22%20recounts%20the%20author's%20year%20spent%20in%20Kyoto,%20Japan,%20learning%20about%20the%20art%20of%20kaiseki.%20Kaiseki%20is%20the%20traditional%20and%20highly%20ritualized%20series%20of%20foods%20to%20accompany%20green%20tea%20ceremonies%20and%20involves%20a%20series%20of%20small%20dishes%20of%20exquisitely%20prepared%20and%20garnished%20foods.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERiccardi%20lands%20in%20Kyoto%20without%20much%20knowledge%20of%20Japanese%20culture%20or%20language,%20but%20is%20fortunate%20to%20have%20some%20friends%20of%20friends%20to%20stay%20with%20until%20she%20finds%20other%20lodging,%20enrolls%20in%20language%20classes%20and%20snags%20a%20coveted%20spot%20in%20a%20prestigious%20tea%20kaiseki%20school%20where%20there%20is%20an%20American%20ex-pat%20to%20help%20her%20navigate%20the%20new%20culinary%20and%20language%20challenges%20she%20faces.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20kaiseki%20banquets%20she%20studies%20sound%20exquisite;%20they%20evolved%20from%20Buddhist%20monastery%20traditions%20into%20highly%20formal%20social%20dining%20banquets%20in%20which%20tastings%20of%20thick%20and%20thin%20whipped%20green%20tea%20are%20interspersed%20with%20samples%20of%20the%20freshest,%20seasonal%20dishes,%20exquisitely%20garnished.%20She%20also%20provides%20interesting%20glimpses%20of%20Japanese%20home%20cooking%20and%20ordinary%20restaurant%20fare,%20and%20includes%20many%20recipes%20easily%20adapted%20to%20Western%20kitchens.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThough%20this%20book%20is%20but%20a%20glimpse%20into%20a%20highly%20complex%20Japanese%20culinary%20tradition,%20it%20was%20a%20mouthwatering%20introduction%20and%20I%20will%20be%20referring%20back%20to%20it%20when%20attempting%20my%20own%20forays%20into%20Japanese%20cooking.%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20enjoyed%20my%20reread%20of%20Riccardi's%20book%20just%20as%20much,%20and%20found%20that%20I%20was%20bookmarking%20different%20pages%20the%20second%20time%20round.%20There%20is%20so%20much%20that%20is%20elegant%20and%20seasonal%20about%20this%20refined%20style%20of%20cuisine%20that%20I%20know%20I%20will%20be%20seeking%20out%20many%20times%20over.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20am%20a%20novice%20Japanese%20cook,%20so%20I%20thought%20I%20would%20start%20with%20the%20basics%20of%20preparing%20dashi,%20the%20kelp%20and%20bonito%20broth%20that%20is%20a%20mainstay%20in%20many%20Japanese%20dishes%20and%20then%20prepare%20a%20simple%20donburi,%20%22Japan's%20quintessential%20comfort%20food%22,%20according%20to%20Riccardi.%20Donburi%20is%20a%20bowl%20of%20hot%20cooked%20rice%20topped%20with%20eggs%20and%20other%20proteins%20along%20with%20vegetables%20in%20a%20salty,%20sweet%20broth.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20made%20dashi%20according%20to%20Riccardi's%20recipe%20(page%2048)%20which%20was%20very%20easy,%20once%20I%20had%20the%20correct%20ingredients:%20konbu,%20or%20dried%20giant%20kelp,%20brought%20just%20to%20the%20boiling%20point%20in%20a%20pot%20of%20water%20and%20then%20removed,%20and%20dried%20bonito%20flakes.%20I%20then%20used%20some%20of%20my%20dashi%20in%20a%20Shrimp%20and%20Egg%20Donburi%20and%20some%20as%20the%20stock%20for%20a%20slurpy%20bowl%20of%20rice%20noodles%20later%20that%20same%20week.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20donburi%20was%20a%20great%20dish%20for%20a%20wintry,%20overcast%20January%20day,%20with%20candles%20lit%20on%20the%20table%20and%20the%20woodstove%20crackling%20away.%20Our%20featured%20book%20notes%20that%20donburi%20restaurants%20pepper%20Japan%20and%20describes%20this%20dish%20thus:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%22Scrumptious,%20healthy,%20and%20prepared%20in%20a%20flash,%20it%20redefined%20the%20meaning%20of%20fast%20food%22%20(p.%2021)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECertainly%20seems%20a%20better%20fast%20food%20alternative%20than%20a%20%22special%20sauce%22%20burger%20and%20fries%20on%20so%20many%20levels.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMix%20dashi,%20soy%20sauce,%20sugar%20and%20mirin%20in%20medium%20soup%20pot.%20Bring%20to%20a%20boil,%20then%20lower%20heat%20and%20simmer%20two%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBreak%20eggs%20into%20mixing%20bowl.%20Untangle%20your%2
