%20Wild%20turkeys%20are%20most%20likely%20the%20variety%20that%20graced%20the%20tables%20on%20those%20early%20Thanksgivings%20in%20the%201600's.%20It's%20also%20probable%20that%20the%20pilgrims%20ate%20other%20wild%20fowl%20like%20goose%20and%20duck%20and%20wild%20game%20such%20as%20deer.%20Lobster,%20seal,%20eel,%20and%20cod%20may%20have%20also%20been%20on%20the%20menu.%20Remember,%20the%20original%20settlements%20and%20eventually%20the%20colonies%20were%20largely%20coastal%20(Pennsylvania%20being%20the%20exception).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThese%20days%20most%20of%20us%20stick%20to%20the%20farm-raised,%20domestic%20type%20bird%20(think%20Butterball)%20that%20we%20purchase%20from%20the%20grocery.%20But%20there%20are%20still%20those%20that%20bring%20home%20their%20Thanksgiving%20bird%20fresh%20from%20the%20field%20or%20woods.%20From%20what%20I%20understand,%20wild%20turkeys%20are%20somewhat%20plentiful.%20They%20inhabit%20every%20state%20in%20the%20union,%20however,%20are%20the%20most%20prevalent%20in%20the%20Eastern%20half%20of%20the%20country.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20are%20whole%20magazines%20published%20about%20turkey%20hunting.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20turkeys%20are%20rumored%20to%20be%20fairly%20unintelligent,%20the%20hunters%20could%20probably%20still%20use%20a%20few%20tips...my%20research%20shows%20that%20wild%20turkeys%20can%20run%20up%20to%2025%20mph%20and%20fly%20at%20speeds%20of%2050-55%20mph.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20personally%20have%20never%20tasted%20wild%20turkey.%20I%20did%20once%20try%20a%20wild%20goose%20that%20my%20grandpa%20shot.%20It%20was%20beyond%20awful.%20That%20single%20experience%20kind%20of%20turned%20me%20off%20on%20wild%20birds%20altogether.%20However,%20if%20any%20of%20you%20adventurous%20readers%20are%20of%20the%20mind%20to%20stalk%20a%20turkey%20in%20the%20wild%20and%20bring%20him%20home%20over%20your%20shoulder%20for%20the%20Thanksgiving%20feast,%20here%20are%20a%20couple%20of%20links%20to%20recipes%20that%20might%20interest%20you:%20Wild%20Turkey%20Recipes%20and%20these%20recipes%20from%20the%20National%20Wild%20Turkey%20Federation.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELast%20week,%20while%20visiting%20the%20Lake%20Erie%20Nature%20and%20Science%20Center%20I%20finally%20got%20close%20enough%20to%20a%20real,%20live,%20wild%20turkey%20to%20snap%20a%20picture.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECheck%20out%20this%20one!%20We%20had%20a%20staring%20contest.%20Who%20are%20you%20lookin'%20at,%20lady!?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOf%20course,%20some%20of%20you%20may%20be%20familiar%20with%20this%20type%20of%20Wild%20Turkey%20at%20your%20holiday%20gathering.%20For%20cooking%20purposes,%20of%20course.%20It%20certainly%20wouldn't%20be%20on%20hand%20to%20ease%20the%20stress%20of%20large%20family%20gatherings%20with%20crazy%20Aunt%20Bethany%20(remember%20her%20from%20National%20Lampoon's%20Christmas%20Family%20Vacation?%20%22Is%20this%20the%20airport,%20Clark?%22),%20dozens%20of%20lively%20young%20children%20running%20wild%20and%20touching%20your%20%22breakables%22,%20and%20heated%20political%20debates%20with%20cousin%20Eddie.%20Right?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere%20are%20MY%20wild%20turkeys...absolutely%20essential%20for%20all%20of%20my%20holiday%20gatherings.%20They%20are%20one%20of%20the%20things%20in%20life%20I%20am%20very%20most%20thankful%20for.%20They%20may%20look%20innocent,%20but%20trust%20me,%20they're%20WILD!%20It's%20genetic.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20year%20my%20daughter's%20class%20got%20to%20be%20the%20turkeys%20for%20Thanksgiving%20Chapel.%20Last%20year%20she%20was%20a%20Native%20American%20or%20a%20warrior%20or%20something%20like%20that%20(I'm%20pretty%20sure%20they're%20not%20allowed%20to%20call%20them%20Indians).%20The%20chapel%20was%20also%20filled%20with%20classes%20of%20Mayflower%20ships%20(they%20sported%20sails%20on%20their%20heads),%20Pilgrims,%20and%20the%20young%20Warriors%20among%20other%20Thanksgiving%20mascots.%20They%20were%20so%20cute!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20now%20the%20countdown%20is%20on!%20Thanksgiving%20is%20one%20week%20away.%20Time%20to%20finalize%20the%20menu,%20make%20the%20grocery%20list,%20press%20the%20linens,%20polish%20the%20silver,%20and%20shine%20that%20crystal!%20Last%20year%20I%20hosted%20Thanksgiving%20at%20my%20house.%20This%20year%20we're%20travelling%20(insert%20sigh%20of%20relief).%20Don't%20get%20me%20wrong.%20I%20loved%20it.%20I%20can't%20wait%20to%20host%20it%20again,%20but%20it's%20also%20nice%20to%20go%20home%20for%20the%20holidays.%20Here%20are%20some%20of%20my%20favorite%20Thanksgiving%20recipes,%20as%20documented%20in%20my%20kitchen%20last%20year.%20I%20was%20a%20baby%20blogger%20back%20then,%20plus%20I%20was%20knee%20deep%20in%20holiday%20preparation%20and%20celebration%20so%20please%20excuse%20the%20photography%20and%20sketchy%20directions.%20Whatcha%20really%20need%20though,%20the%20recipes,%20are%20there.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHappy%20cooking,%20happy%20eating%20and%20most%20of%20all,%20Happy%20Thanksgiving!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStay%20tuned%20next%20week%20for%20ways%20to%20utilize%20that%20leftover%20turkey!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
