%20was%20once%20such%20blast%20from%20my%20past%20that%20I%20recently%20found%20at%20a%20library%20book%20sale%20and%20yelped%20over%20at%20first%20sight.%20My%20copy%20is%20worn,%20torn%20and%20full%20of%20librarian%20desecrations,%20but%20it%20is%20now%20enshrined%20in%20a%20place%20of%20honor%20in%20my%20bookshelves%20at%20home.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20remember%20borrowing%20this%20book%20numerous%20times%20from%20my%20local%20library%20long%20after%20I%20outgrew%20a%20respectable%20age%20to%20check%20out%20children's%20picture%20books,%20but%20I%20loved%20reading%20it%20over%20and%20over%20and%20gazing%20at%20Ungerer's%20hilarious%20illustrations.%20It's%20a%20great%20fairy%20tale%20about%20a%20plucky%20young%20farm%20girl%20named%20Zeralda%20who%20conquers%20a%20kid-eating%20ogre%20with%20her%20culinary%20skills.%20She%20eventually%20ends%20up%20marrying%20him,%20which%20I%20remember%20thinking%20was%20icky%20even%20way%20back%20when,%20but%20I%20loved%20poring%20over%20the%20zany%20illustrations%20of%20what%20she%20cooked%20up.%20Think%20Brothers%20Grimm%20mashed%20together%20with%20the%20colorful,%20exuberant%20Sixties%20graphic%20design%20sense%20of%20Ungerer's%20better%20known%20artist%20colleagues%20like%20Milton%20Glaser%20or%20Seymour%20Chwast.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EZeralda's%20food%20is%20over-the-top%20%22Gourmet%22,%20festooned%20with%20encrustations%20and%20garnishes.%20I%20remember%20my%20child%20self%20thinking%20a%20roast%20chicken%20with%20red%20high%20heels%20was%20rather%20fetching%20and%20it%20still%20makes%20me%20grin%20today.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHow%20about%20that%20%22Pompano%20a%20la%20Sarah%20Bernhardt%22%20below?%20Ha!%20I%20really%20wanted%20to%20recreate%20this%20dish%20for%20my%20homage%20to%20Zeralda%20post%20here,%20but%20all%20those%20lurid%20colors%20had%20me%20stumped.%20I%20could%20make%20a%20crispy%20whole%20fried%20fish%20Asian-style%20with%20the%20head%20and%20tail%20still%20attached,%20lounging%20in%20a%20puddle%20of%20black%20bean%20sauce,%20but%20the%20sauce%20in%20the%20illustration%20really%20looks%20more%20like%20a%20chocolate%20sundae%20topping%20or%20mole.%20Molded%20rice%20timbales%20might%20work%20for%20those%20little%20cylinders%20surrounding%20the%20fish,%20with%20roasted%20asparagus%20curled%20up%20at%20the%20base,%20but%20then%20what%20would%20I%20do%20about%20those%20lavender,%20pink,%20mint,%20yellow%20and%20blue%20stripes%20adorning%20the%20fish%20body?%20It%20all%20sounded%20too%20complicated%20and%20frankly,%20somewhat%20inedible,%20the%20more%20I%20pondered%20the%20Pompano%20Project.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInstead,%20I%20decided%20to%20make%20something%20riotously%20colorful%20and%20festive%20but%20still%20tasty,%20and%20so%20I%20put%20together%20a%20version%20of%20Antipasto%20Kebabs%20to%20bring%20to%20a%20party%20recently.%20There%20are%20many%20versions%20that%20one%20can%20make,%20depending%20on%20the%20type%20of%20pickled,%20salty%20snacks%20you%20prefer,%20but%20the%20key%20is%20keeping%20a%20nice%20color%20balance%20and%20finding%20appropriate-length%20toothpicks%20to%20spear%20them%20with.%20I%20finally%20found%20a%20nice%20package%20of%20four-inch%20toothpicks%20(standard%20sized%20toothpicks%20are%20really%20too%20small%20and%20bigger%20wooden%20skewers%20go%20beyond%20finger%20food%20handling).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20Zeralda%20had%20made%20these%20skewers%20they%20probably%20would%20be%20sticking%20out%20of%20a%20purple%20cabbage%20or%20some%20kind%20of%20crazy%20edible%20ziggurat,%20but%20I%20chose%20an%20antique%20china%20plate%20instead%20for%20my%20base.%20And%20the%20ogres%20I%20served%20them%20to%20ate%20them%20all%20up.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAntipasto%20Kebabs%20a%20la%20Zeralda%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMakes%2030%20skewers%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThese%20kebabs%20can%20also%20be%20drizzled%20with%20a%20little%20vinaigrette%20right%20before%20serving,%20and/or%20garnished%20with%20a%20little%20snipped%20parsley.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20artichoke%20hearts%20were%20a%20little%20floppy%20and%20the%20kebabs%20with%20giardiniera%20seemed%20to%20be%20gobbled%20up%20last,%20so%20I%20would%20go%20with%20more%20of%20the%20popular%20mozzarella%20and%20salami%20combinations%20in%20the%20future.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20post%20is%20my%20contribution%20to%20Novel%20Food,%20a%20semi-annual%20blog%20event%20hosted%20by%20my%20blogger%20buddy,%20Simona%20of%20Briciole.%20For%20Novel%20Food,%20one%20can%20submit%20a%20food%20post%20that%20derives%20inspiration%20by%20any%20literary%20work.%20If%20you%20would%20like%20to%20join%20in%20the%20fun,%20you%20can%20do%20so%20by%20the%20deadline%20of%20July%201,%202013,%20or%20wait%20until%20the%20next%20edition%20of%20Novel%20Food.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
