%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBruschetta%20with%20Tomatoes%20and%20Lemon%20Basil%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20easily%20my%20favorite%20time%20of%20year:%20walking%20around%20outside%20with%20not%20much%20besides%20a%20sweater%20or%20a%20slick%20jacket%20is%20not%20just%20possible%20but%20a%20pleasure,%20and%20farmers%20markets%20are%20still%20brimming%20with%20the%20last%20of%20the%20summer%20produce%20(well,%20perhaps%20now%20the%20best%20of%20the%20tomatoes%20are%20gone)%20and%20the%20early%20fall%20bounty,%20all%20but%20guaranteeing%20a%20heady,%20sensual%20experience%20when%20stepping%20out%20from%20the%20subway%20and%20into%20Union%20Square.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EClearly,%20this%20will%20not%20last%20forever;%20soon%20we%E2%80%99ll%20be%20dealing%20with%20%E2%80%9Csnowicanes%E2%80%9D%20and%20shorter%20days%20and%20heavy%20coats.%20So%20meals%20during%20this%20time%20of%20year%20deserve%20to%20reflect%20the%20period%20of%20transition%20we%E2%80%99re%20experiencing:%20a%20little%20bit%20of%20summer,%20a%20little%20bit%20of%20fall.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERigatoni%20with%20Pork%20Rag%C3%B9,%20in%20the%20pan%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20me,%20this%20means%20%E2%80%9Cmake%20bruschetta%20with%20the%20remaining%20tomatoes%20and%20wait%20for%20the%20first%20cool%20day%20that%20justifies%20making%20a%20meaty%20ragu%20sauce.%E2%80%9D%20There%E2%80%99s%20one%20stand%20in%20Union%20Square%20that%20we%E2%80%99ve%20taken%20a%20shine%20to%20thanks%20to%20its%20gorgeous%20and%20delicious%20produce%20along%20with%20a%20wide%20variety%20of%20exotic%20herbs%E2%80%93they%20carry%20everything%20from%20purple%20basil%20to%20Vietnamese%20oregano%E2%80%93and%20when%20I%20looked%20at%20the%20lemon%20basil%20a%20few%20Saturdays%20ago,%20I%20knew%20that%20some%20last-gasp%20bruschetta%20was%20in%20order%20(though,%20let%E2%80%99s%20be%20honest:%20if%20we%20go%20this%20weekend%20and%20see%20similarly%20good-looking%20tomatoes,%20I%E2%80%99ll%20probably%20get%20those%20and%20make%20this%20again).%20It%20was%20shockingly%20easy%20to%20sell%20Michael%20on%20the%20rigatoni%20ragu%20(given%20that%20it%20included%20one%20of%20his%20food%20nemeses%20fresh%20ricotta%20cheese),%20but%20I%20think%20a%20summer%20based%20heavily%20on%20lighter%20fare%20had%20by%20then%20developed%20a%20craving%20for%20a%20rich%20and%20meaty%20sauce.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERigatoni%20with%20Pork%20Rag%C3%B9%20and%20Fresh%20Ricotta%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWell,%20Food%20+%20Wine%20did%20not%20disappoint:%20their%20October%20issue,%20celebrating%20all%20things%20Italian,%20featured%20this%20as%20one%20of%20their%20new%20recipes%20and%20it%20was%20absolutely%20divine.%20This%20is%20kind%20of%20like%20a%20deconstructed%20lasagne,%20though%20not%20quite%20as%20cheesy%E2%80%93a%20welcome%20compromise%20for%20a%20household%20where%20one%20person%20loves%20fresh%20ricotta%20while%20the%20other%20is%20more%20than%20happy%20to%20forgo%20it.%20It%20also%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20hours%20and%20hours%20to%20make%20and%20the%20utilization%20of%20copious%20amounts%20of%20herbs%20and%20wine%20ensures%20that%20your%20kitchen/apartment/hopefully%20house%20is%20perfumed%20with%20the%20scent%20of%20this%20sauce%20cooking.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20what%20are%20you%20waiting%20for?%20Run,%20don%E2%80%99t%20walk%20to%20F+W%E2%80%99s%20website%20and%20try%20this%20recipe!%20In%20the%20meantime,%20give%20this%20bruschetta%20topping%20a%20whirl%20(assuming%20you%20still%20have%20access%20to%20some%20awesome%20tomatoes).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBruschetta%20with%20Tomatoes%20and%20Lemon%20Basil%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServes%202%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2-3%20garlic%20cloves,%20unpeeled%20but%20not%20crushed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20oven%20to%20400%20degrees.%20Arrange%20bread%20rounds%20onto%20a%20baking%20sheet%20and%20bake%20until%20golden,%20about%206-8%20minutes%20(but%20keep%20checking%20them%20so%20they%20don%E2%80%99t%20burn).%20When%20finished,%20remove%20from%20oven,%20let%20cool%20slightly%20and%20then%20carefully%20rub%20each%20piece%20with%20garlic%20cloves.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20the%20meantime,%20combine%20the%20tomatoes,%20basil,%20lemon%20zest%20and%20juice,%20a%20little%20salt,%20and%20olive%20oil;%20stir%20to%20combine%20and%20season%20with%20more%20salt%20if%20needed.%20Spoon%20topping%20over%20bruschetta%20and%20garnish%20with%20basil%20flowers%20if%20available.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBuon%20apetito!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
