%20in%20college,%20when%20I%20was%20living%20in%20Kansas.%20This%20year%20marked%20my%2013th%20party.%20I%20have%20never%20missed%20a%20year.%20Traditionally,%20it%20is%20held%20in%20December,%20but%20one%20year%20I%20had%20it%20in%20January,%20due%20to%20travel%20plans.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYes,%20this%20used%20to%20be%20called%20%22Jenny's%20Annual%20Christmas%20Cookie%20Party,%22%20but%20then%20my%20friend%20and%20former%20co-worker%20Sarena%20gave%20me%20a%20dreidel%20cookie%20cutter%20and%20I%20changed%20the%20name%20to%20be%20more%20inclusive.%20I%20celebrate%20Christmas,%20but%20you%20don't%20have%20to!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20whole%20thing%20is%20based%20on%20the%20Open%20House%20my%20mom%20had%20before%20Christmas%20every%20year%20when%20I%20was%20growing%20up.%20Mom's%20party%20was%20held%20over%20several%20hours%20on%20a%20Sunday%20afternoon%20and%20she%20never%20asked%20anyone%20to%20RSVP.%20She%20made%20hundreds%20of%20cookies%20in%20advance%20and%20invited%20everyone%20in%20the%20church,%20my%20sister's%20and%20my%20friends,%20and%20close%20neighbors.%20My%20philosophy%20is%20similar,%20though%20I%20start%20receiving%20guests%20in%20the%20evening,%20and%20I%20never%20know%20how%20many%20people%20to%20expect.%20Usually%20there%20are%20between%2030%20and%2050%20attendees.%20Mom%20began%20baking%20in%20October,%20freezing%20everything,%20but%20she%20had%20a%20big%20chest%20freezer%20in%20the%20garage.%20I%20live%20in%20New%20York%20City%20in%20a%20small%20apartment%20(with%20a%20small%20freezer),%20so%20I%20have%20to%20do%20everything%20on%20a%20smaller%20scale%20--%20and%20in%20just%20a%20few%20weeks.%20I%20also%20can't%20invite%20everyone%20I%20know,%20so%20my%20invite%20list%20is%20a%20little%20smaller%20(though%20not%20restrictive).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYes,%20I%20bake%20them%20all%20myself.%20Though%20I'm%20happy%20to%20have%20friends%20come%20over%20to%20help%20(or%20keep%20me%20company),%20only%20Steph%20(last%20year's%20fudge)%20and%20Angela%20(during%20the%20Kansas%20years)%20have%20been%20extra%20hands%20in%20the%20kitchen%20(also,%20Rachel%20has%20been%20a%20big%20help%20during%20clean%20up,%20and%20I%20can%20already%20tell%20her%20young%20daughter%20is%20going%20to%20be%20a%20good%20sous-chef).%20This%20year,%20I%20started%20baking%20cookies%20for%20the%20party%20at%20the%20beginning%20of%20the%20second%20week%20of%20December.%20I%20made%20them%20whenever%20I%20had%20a%20free%20night%20--%20usually%202%20kinds%20per%20night%20--%20including%20most%20of%20the%20nights%20last%20week%20and%20most%20of%20the%20day%20(and%20evening)%20on%20weekend%20days.%20I%20finished%20baking%20around%20midnight%20most%20nights,%20but%20occasionally%20stayed%20up%20until%201%20or%202.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20would%20estimate%20that%20for%20this%20year's%20cookies%20I%20used%20around%2015%20pounds%20of%20flour,%2012%20pounds%20of%20butter,%20and%20more%20than%2010%20pounds%20of%20sugar%20(granulated,%20natural,%20brown,%20sanding,%20and%20powdered).%20Many%20of%20the%20recipes%20I%20use%20are%20my%20mom's.%20Others%20are%20from%20internet%20searches,%20blogs,%20cookbooks,%20magazines,%20and%20friends.%20I%20do%20tweak%20some%20of%20the%20recipes%20to%20my%20own%20needs/desires,%20but%20I%20have%20never%20created%20a%20cookie%20recipe%20from%20scratch.%20The%20menu%20is%20never%20the%20same.%20I%20haven't%20officially%20%22retired%22%20any%20cookies%20(except%20possibly%20the%20bacon%20cookies%20described%20below),%20but%20I%20do%20like%20to%20rotate%20what%20I%20make.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20don't%20have%20a%20favorite%20cookie,%20but%20I%20always%20make%20Snickerdoodles.%20They're%20a%20favorite%20from%20my%20childhood.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20weirdest%20cookie%20I%20ever%20made%20was%20a%20bacon%20cookie%20that%20turned%20out%20like%20a%20hard%20biscuit.%20Dan%20named%20them%20%22German%20Wartime%20Treats.%22%20I%20don't%20plan%20to%20make%20those%20again,%20though%20I%20remain%20open%20to%20a%20bacon%20cookie%20in%20theory.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20year,%20my%20surprise%20temporary%20favorites%20were%20the%20Cornflake%20Pecan%20Honeys%20(made%20with%20local%20honey)%20and%20the%20Walnut%20Rum%20Errors.%20The%20latter%20are%20named%20that%20because%20I%20mis-read%20a%20Martha%20Stewart%20cookie%20recipe%20and%20didn't%20follow%20the%20directions%20correctly.%20The%20result%20was%20a%20sticky%20cookie%20dough%20that%20almost%20didn't%20survive%20the%20baking%20process.%20They%20came%20out%20fragile,%20flat,%20burnt-looking,%20and%20were%20hard%20to%20remove%20from%20the%20cookie%20sheet.%20But%20they%20are%20actually%20delicious!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHow%20is%20it%20that%20all%20those%20cookies%20don't%20go%20stale?%20Each%20year,%20I%20freeze%20everything%20I%20make%20in%20airtight%20containers%20until%20my%20freezer%20is%20full.%20This%20year,%20when%20my%20freezer%20was%20at%20capacity%20I%20moved%20the%20next%20several%20batches%20into%20a%20friend's%20freezer%20(thanks,%20R!).%20When%20that%20was%20stuffed,%20and%20with%20the%20party%20less%20than%20a%20week%20away,%20I%20moved%20on%20to%20piling%20cookie%20containers%20into%20my%20fridge,%20storing%20items%20there%20for%20a%20couple%20of%20days.%20If%20there's%20no%20refrigerated%20room%20left%20in%20the%20inn,%20last%20minute%20items%20do%20well%20at%20room%20temperature%20during%20the%20final%20week,%20as%20long%20as%20they're%20in%20airtight%20containers.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPeople%20who%20attend%20the%20party%20should%20NOT%20bring%20cookies!%20They%20are%20invited%20to%20bring%20booze,%20if%20they%20want%20something%20special.%20I%20do%20make%20a%20couple%20of%20spike-able%20drinks%20available.%20It's%20not%20just%20cookies,%20either.%20I%20also%20make%20savory%20and%20sweet%20non-cookie%20items%20like%20meatballs,%20pralines,%20toffee,%20cheese%20puffs,%20etc.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20recent%20years,%20I%20have%20added%20a%20%22fresh%22%20cookie%20option.%20I%20bake%20one%20kind%20of%20cookie%20(usually%20a%20chocolate%20chip%20with%20nuts)%20during%20the%20party,%20so%20that%20they%20can%20be%20eaten%20warm.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20year%20I%20made%202,244%20cookies%20(21%20different%20varieties).%20I%20don't%20count%20%22testers%22%20eaten%20by%20Dan%20or%20me%20during%20the%20baking%20process.%20We%20don't%20eat%20a%20lot%20of%20them,%20though.%20Maybe%202%20or%203%20per%20batch%20--%20unless%20a%20lot%20of%20them%20break%20or%20they're%20really%20fab.%20I%20also%20did%20not%20count%20the%20Mrs.%20Fields%20cookies%20baked%20during%20the%20party,%20but%20the%20recipe%20claimed%20it%20would%20make%20around%2050%20of%20them.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYes,%20I%20love%20doing%20this.%20I%20drive%20myself%20a%20little%20crazy%20every%20year%20(I%20usually%20have%201-4%20mini%20meltdowns,%20and%20I%20learn%20something%20from%20each%20one),%20and%20Dan%20helps%20a%20lot%20with%20the%20dishes%20and%20cleaning%20(and%20he%20always%20makes%20the%20Crispix%20Mix),%20but%20it%20is%20all%20worth%20the%20effort%20once%20I'm%20at%20the%20party.%20I%20think%20of%20it%20as%20a%20gift%20for%20all%20my%20treasured%20friends.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(photo%20by%20unknown)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(photo%20by%20Dan)%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
