%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPrices%20for%20lobsters%20vary%20widely,%20and%20if%20you're%20a%20New%20Englander%20hoping%20to%20get%20some%20really%20cheap%20bugs%20at%20the%20shore,%20you%20may%20be%20just%20as%20well%20off%20buying%20lobsters%20on%20sale%20at%20your%20local%20supermarket.%20In%20my%20area,%20over%20an%20hour%20inland,%20lobsters%20are%20running%20on%20sale%20at%20$4.99%20a%20pound%20-%20and%20despite%20everything%20you%20might%20have%20heard%20on%20the%20news,%20that's%20about%20what%20you're%20going%20to%20pay%20at%20the%20lobster%20pounds%20in%20Maine.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20are%20three%20terms%20you%20need%20to%20be%20familiar%20with%20when%20you're%20buying%20lobster%20at%20a%20pound:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECulls%20-%20These%20are%20lobsters%20that%20have%20lost%20one%20of%20their%20large%20claws.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESoft-shells%20-%20Lobsters%20moult%20annually,%20losing%20their%20hardened%20shells%20and%20growing%20a%20new%20one.%20The%20new%20shell%20is%20thin%20and%20soft%20enough%20to%20be%20torn%20away%20with%20your%20fingers%20-%20no%20crackers%20needed!%20-%20but%20it%20is%20also%20much%20larger%20than%20the%20meat%20inside,%20because%20the%20lobster%20needs%20enough%20room%20inside%20the%20new%20shell%20to%20grow%20for%20the%20coming%20year.%20Just%20remember%20that%20when%20you%20buy%20a%20soft-shell%20lobster,%20there's%20not%20as%20much%20meat%20inside%20as%20it%20looks.%20%20Check%20out%20the%20picture%20at%20left:%20I%20took%20a%20photo%20of%20a%20soft-shelled%20lobster%20claw%20against%20a%20bright%20light.%20The%20dark%20area%20in%20the%20shell%20is%20the%20shadow%20of%20the%20meat%20the%20shell%20actually%20contains.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHard-shells%20-%20Lobsters%20contain%20the%20most%20meat%20when%20their%20shells%20are%20thick%20and%20hard%20-%20they%20have%20grown%20into%20the%20shell%20they%20created%20when%20they%20last%20moulted.%20Lots%20of%20meat,%20but%20it's%20more%20difficult%20to%20get%20out%20because%20the%20shell%20is%20thick%20and%20hard%20and%20needs%20to%20be%20cracked%20open%20with%20a%20cracker%20or%20even%20a%20crab%20mallet.%20%20Here's%20a%20picture%20of%20the%20meat%20from%20a%20hardshell%20claw.%20%20See%20how%20much%20larger%20it%20is,%20and%20how%20it%20fills%20the%20shell?%20But%20you%20can%20also%20see%20that%20the%20shell%20was%20about%20%C2%BC-inch%20thick%20-%20I%20needed%20a%20hammer%20to%20get%20into%20it!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOkay,%20lesson%20over%20-%20back%20to%20the%20story%20about%20lobster%20prices.%20We%20found%20that%20the%20lowest%20prices%20-%20anywhere%20from%20$2.99%20to%20about%20$4%20a%20pound%20-%20were%20for%20small,%20soft-shelled%20culls%20weighing%20about%20a%20pound,%20and%20for%20small%20whole%20lobsters%20up%20to%20about%201%C2%BC%20pounds.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPound-and-a-half%20lobsters%20-%20the%20size%20you%20most%20often%20find%20in%20restaurant%20lobster%20dinners%20-%20were%20ranging%20from%20$3.75%20to%20about%20$5%20a%20pound%20for%20softshells.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20the%20sizes%20got%20larger,%20the%20prices%20increased%20steeply.%20One%20lobster%20pound%20in%20Portland,%20ME%20started%20their%20prices%20at%20$7.95%20a%20pound%20for%20small%20softshells.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENo%20matter%20where%20we%20were,%20hard-shell%20lobsters%20were%20about%20a%20dollar%20a%20pound%20more%20expensive.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOur%20biggest%20surprise,%20though,%20was%20the%20price%20of%20lobster%20dinners%20in%20restaurants,%20which%20averaged%20about%20$16.95%20with%20a%20couple%20of%20places%20charging%20upwards%20of%20$24.%20Clearly,%20diners%20are%20not%20seeing%20the%20benefits%20of%20the%20lower%20lobster%20prices%20on%20the%20dock.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you're%20heading%20for%20the%20coast%20in%20search%20of%20a%20New%20England%20Shore%20Dinner,%20welcome!%20You%20will%20find%20some%20good%20deals%20if%20you%20take%20some%20time%20and%20look%20around.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
